Summary: and I hate flying anyway
Review: Occasionally I feel in the mood for a movie that I know is going to be ridiculous, but that I just want to be a couch potato for. No note making. No expectations. No brainpower required. And action thrillers are a good genre for this kind of mindless forgettable entertainment. Plus as I hate flying on planes because it's like being locked in a room for hours, I get a perverse kick out of seeing plane disaster movies. What surprised me about this film, and what I doubt even the makers realise, is that it becomes a two hander, and I was imagining it being done on the stage, if you can imagine a plane set on stage. (But then Nixon in China had a plane). Whilst admitting to not noticing the upstanding martini glass after the plane did its sommersault, one thing no other reviewer has picked up on is the karaoke joke, which made me laugh out loud. And darn it if I wasn't upright for the finale, hoping above all that the plane was gonna make it home safely, and grateful we didn't get the ubiquitous you-thought-I-was-dead, didn't-you? cliche. And did you think we would get a title at the end about someone studying for a new career? The crowd accumulated in the flight tower worried me. I mean, why so many? And imagine poor Hector Elizondo thinking that his part would be important going from the opening scenes, to be then shunted aside. Well he always has director Gary Marshall to work for. As for the acting, well, Helen Hayes may have won an Oscar for Airport, but has anyone else survived their turn with reputation intact? It's always nice to see Lauren Holly run around in her underwear, and I was sure glad to see Catherine Hicks only have a minor part. Some might say considering the performances she's been giving, she deserved to meet a serial killer a long time ago. As for Ray Liotta, I'm only sorry he wasn't given a musical instrument to play.

Summary: What is the problem with this movie?
Review: The acting was solid and effects o.k for early cgi. So what gives, I know people hate remakes as a standard did they think this was a remake?

Summary: Great movie, terrible DVD
Review: The movie is pretty good, and easily my favorite airplane-themed action movie. It has a very creepy horror-ish twist instead of the blander and more typical varieties of airplane crash movie like Air Force One, Passenger 57, and Panic in the Skies! I could spoil the movie and explain how it excels in the horror-thriller category, or just simply say that it has a quality not often found in action films, particularly airplane movies.

Also, this movie has good technical accuracies and special effects, though I did think the storm scenes were a bit overdone. It won't detract from the movie.

My main problems are not with the movie itself, but with the DVD. The sound and picture quality are typical, nothing particularly good or bad about them. The bonus features are severely lacking, just one trailer and a few bios. I saw a making-of program for this movie on TV once, and found it quite fascinating, but that was left out of this DVD. Also absent are commentaries, behind-the-scenes photos, a bundled pan-and-scan version, and all the other stuff that separates a good DVD from a bad DVD. The DVD doesn't have a full-color label, in fact it doesn't have a label at all, the logo is just sort of etched on the DVD. The menu is decent, and includes a typical scene index. However, there is no country called "Whales." Furthermore, the case is hideous--instead of the pretty plastic cases that most DVDs come in this is packaged in a [] cardboard sleeve with absolutely no liner book.

HBO gets an A for the movie and an F for the packaging and presentation of the DVD. If you have the movie on VHS, don't bother converting to DVD.

Summary: A non-stop roller coaster ride that will leave you nauseous
Review: The plot is predictable and has so many holes in it you could fly a 747 through it. The acting is wooden, and although there are some reasonable special effects, it does not make up for the story line. I could spend forever writing about all the bad points in the movie, but I shall just say this: If you are given the choice of watching this movie or counting blades of grass, there really is no competition - at least you will get some fresh air. Summary: "Turbulence"
Review: This is a pretty good movie. Ray Liotta is totally over the top and Lauren Holly is not that good. The action is not that bad it kinda cool. But if you want a good air disaster film see "Air Force One" and stay away from "Turbulences" two sequels: "Turbulence 2: Fear of Flying" and "Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal" The 1st is enough!

Summary: Airport '75 meets the 90's Not too Well!
Review: This is just like Airport '75: flight attendant flying a 747 with problems. But instead of a hole in the plane its a killer stalking her. Lauren Holly is good in this movie but she can't save the movie. A better-made plot and better acting would have made this better, but without, the film suffered.

Summary: Very dumb - sloppy filmaking
Review: This is the worst DVD I've ever seen (and I sat through 'Dracula: Dead and Loving It!'). Completely unrealistic and contrived. I will relate a few of the many things that bugged me:

1) The fire hazard Christmas lights strung up all over the interior of the 747. Yeah right!

2) The rapist/killer psychopath easily overpowers about 10 FBI agents. Sure.

3) OH NO! No one left to fly the plane! (Yawn!)

4) About 20 passengers on a 747 flight near Christmas, among 400 empty seats. Next time you cram onto a jam packed, holiday season commercial flight, think about that.

5) The psychopath easily gains the sympathy of Lauren Holly. Please.

6) I saved the best for last. Watch for the prolonged 'flying upside down' scene where the killer and Holly wrestle on the ceiling of the aircraft as the plane flies upside down. This goes on for about 5 minutes. Then watch the killer stroll up to first class, sit down, and casually pick up an UNSPILLED MARTINI! So funny. But that's Turbulence. Obvious, contrived plot and unrealistic all the way.

If you value your money (or good moviemaking) and buy this, you'll really hate yourself.

Summary: Okay, if you are in the mood.
Review: This movie may seem a bit dated. Action movies today nearly always have some ironic or political edge. Turbulence is just violence and action just for the sake of it. If you want to see cool plane action and stunts rent Executive Decision or Con Air.

We're supposed to care about the characters but we don't. The action scenes are supposed to thrill us but merely entertain in a big, dumb way. And Ray Liotta just isn't scary as the serial killer. He goes way over the top. But, thankfully, is never campy (always a mistake when playing serial killers, coughhannibalcough). There is just no reason for watching this film unless you're the kind of person who likes to watch boring movies for a solid 90 minutes for a good bit that's over in 30 seconds.

The R1 DVD is in very cool Dolby 5.1 and is shown in the incorrect aspect ratio of 1.78:1 (16x9 enhanced) instead of the theatrical 2.35:1. The R2 DVD however is in Dolby 2.0 Surround but shows the film in the proper ratio of 2.35:1.

Summary: Entertaining
Review: This movie was ok. It was like Air Force One without a plot. It is the stupidest movie ive ever seen, but if you are at home all alone one Friday night, this movie'll keep you entertained all night. Notes to Parents: If you are letting your kids see this, there are rape scenes, murder scenes, and mild nudity. I would have rated this move R but, who cares
