Summary: A wonderful movie
Review: I am not a fan of Shakespeare, and personally, I do not like the story "Romeo and Juliet". But this movie even makes that story great. The production has to be the best I have ever seen in any movie ever. The lights are beautiful, the soundtrack is wonderful, the way it was all put together, it just captured my heart. Now how many movies are there where the plot isn't that good, but just the production of the movie makes it 5-star-worthy? Not many. The best scenes are right before the party at the Capulet's house, there is glamorous and elaborate firework scene that is so pretty. And toward the end where Juliet lies, she is surrounded by endless amount of candles and it is so beautiful. You should see the movie just for the picture and music alone.

Summary: A Great Movie
Review: This movie is great. The cast did a great job in making the movie modern and they still had the play in the movie.I think that lots of people would like the movie,I do and I know people who do to.

Summary: Something Shakespeare could only dream of.
Review: If there was some way to make this movie better, I haven't thought of it. The love between two people has never been displayed more perfectly. The way they would rather die than be seperated from their love, it is so tragic. This movie makes you think of how precious love and family really is.

Summary: Absoultley not Shakespeare
Review: All those people that have a taste for Shakespeare will agree with me that this movie doesn't seem to fufill the aquired taste of the English Shakespearean, this play shows poor acting skills, and if Shakespeare was alive today he would be very dissapointed in what we have done to his once " loved" story about two star crossed lovers. The movie was supposed to depict the life in the nintey's but with the Shakespearan talk you have lost all customers 20 and under who can't understand it , and are their either to see the blossiming Claire Danes or the " Hunky " Leo. Movie was made for the script not the actors, keep that in mind when you review.

Summary: Romeo + Juliet
Review: This is a clever, well done adaption of the bard's most famous love story. Fast paced, with a cast of rising stars, it is an absolutely accurate version of the text. However, it does not do the play justice in many ways, and first time Romeo and Juliet viewers would be better watching one of the more traditional versions, in order to view the story as Shakespeare saw it. In spite of this, it is a very clever adaption, and quite worth spending a couple of hours on.

Summary: Wonderful!
Review: I absolutly LOVED it! One of my favorite movies. They kept the dialogue exactly as in the play. The only thing different ist that the scenes are modern. Great for ANYONE who loved the play or just any of the romantics out there.

Summary: shakespeare would be hinding his face
Review: this is a poorly made film for one thing i have seen better acting from five year olds it had none of the heart and passion that made it such a touching play in the first place and can i just say to all the girls out there going goo goo gaa gaa over whats his name get a grip you were asked to review the movie not him and i would also like to share with all of you that "leo" didn't write the play nor did he help write it william shakespeare died over 400 years ago so you can stop giving him your congads on the "book" it wasn't him shakespeare did it all by himself

Summary: But this IS Shakespeare!
Review: Baz Luhrmann has a way with editing that makes a movie's pace snap, and, in this case, builds the tension. The narration has this same snappiness that remains true to the original verse. As usual, for Luhrmann, the characterization is over-the-top, but so was Shakespeare's in his day. This version of R&J is for the mind that can see the relevance of R&J today, as an authentic story, and who can keep up with the inspiring assault upon the senses. This a a high.

Summary: What is the purpose?
Review: Romeo and Juliet is a great work, not because only of the story it tells, but because of the beauty of the language with which it tells that story. A Beethoven symphony is great work, not because only of the musical themes and how they are arranged but because of the perfection of the orchestration.

Now if a cast cannot do justice to Shakespeare's words or an orchestra cannot do justice to Beethoven's music, we have to consider the result a failure. I can't see any disagreement so far.

Now if Spike Jones does a spoof a Beethoven work, we laugh and accept it for what it is: a humorous attempt that uses Beethoven but does not pretend to BE Beethoven. It is not quite clear to me exactly what this movie is setting out to do. Certainly it trying to tell a timeless story set in modern times. So far, so good. Picture now a junior high school band trying to play a very difficult work. In both cases the persons involved simply cannot handle the very thing that makes the work great: here the speaking of the verse, there the playing of the music.

If the purpose of this film was to get an audience to see (at least) the story and get some idea of the language--an audience that would not ordinarily see the original--then it has succeeded very nicely. But it is not Shakespeare any more than any one of the several film versions of Dracula is Dracula, or Frankenstein Frankenstein, and so on.

It is interesting to see that many reviews that do not praise the stars are voted "not helpful." We really need a third choice: disagree.

Summary: "Luminous!"
Review: I was bowled over by the fresh new approach and meaning given to the ancient words of Shakespeare. This film made the story accessible and relevant for modern times. I watched it twice in a row. I loved it!
