Summary: One of My Favorites
Review: I like this movie. I like everything about it, its sweeping scale, its romance, its action, its musical score, its setting.
Based on Cooper's novel, it tells the story of Nathan, a white raised by the Mohicans and his travails during the French-Indian War.
The plot centers on Nathan during the siege of Ft. William and the aftermath. Nathan and his family rescue the Munroe sisters from an Huron ambush and agree to take them to their father, Col. Munroe, commandant of Ft. WIlliam. Upon arriving, they learn of the siege and the desparate situation. After the fort falls, the British are allowed to leave, only to be ambushed and slaughtered. Nathan again rescues the Munroe girls, he's fallen in love with Cora, the oldest and try to escape. The Hurons follow and capture the girls. Nathan follows and in the dramatic climax, rescues Cora but Alice kills herself, following Unkas, her love, into death.
THe musical score is terrific and captures the haunting beauty of the landscape. SInce I live where the movie was filmed, I biased but the setting is gorgeous.
THe roles of Nathan is played well by Lewis. It is a little melodramatic but very enjoyable.

Summary: Fantastic Movie
Review: When I first saw this movie, I liked it right away. It had this intensity and sense of adventure right from the beginning. Mixed with a passionate love story between two people, this movie is one of the best out there.

The story is based on a famous novel everyone heard about. Basically there is a war going on in the America between the French and English. Entangled in this fight are also brutal Huron indians, led by Magua. Hawkeye is a white, raised by indian tribe since his early childhood. When he, his "brother" Uncas and his "father" Chingachkook, save Munroe's daughters, Cora and Alice, from the indians, Cora and Hawkeye soon fall in love.

What else am I supposed to say to this one? Fantastic movie, great actors, absolutely beautiful music - everything an adventurous and historical movie should have. Grade A+ - period.

Summary: Shame on you Michael Mann
Review: I wish so much, that i had read Eric Batesons review before i bought this film. I too am a great fan of the film, the VHS edition that is, but after having watched the directors cut I am a bit disapointed in Michael Mann. He has cut out two of the coolest lines in the film, and removed "Clannad - I Will Find you" from the soundtrack. The image and sound quality is of course topnotch, but that just doesn't justify destroying such a good film, by doing the lousyest directors cut I have ever seen.

Summary: Cinematography, Story, and more...
Review: Last of the Mohicans is a beautiful movie. Although graphic at times the story is a timeless one. The cinematography is beautiful. The actors are wonderful and so is the score. This movie is one of my favorites and I think anyone who likes sweeping adventures will love it as well.

Summary: What the dvd has done.....
Review: O.K., I felt more like 3 1/2, but I had to get it out there. My old widescreen vhs that was digitally THX mastered was awesome, but come on it's vhs. I felt that if vhs could do thet, just wait for the dvd. Michael Mann decided to make a directors cut. Innocent enough, but I wish he would have released both versions. The new version was poorly edited, and at the new moments, the sound and picture quality looks like a special feature, as it should be. Michael Mann took out the best line in the film. He had to start wondering, "Will this sell?" A rare, but great dvd special feature is to have a person edit the film the way they want it to be seen. Not, you don't get to cut out lines, spip off 2 seconds here, add it there, but you get to cut out unwqanted scenes. Michael Mann cut out scenes from the origional release, and added new ones. What is the advantage to that. He could have added the deleted scenes, and if YOU wanted to, you could fast foreward. He should have actually tried this out in front of an audience. But, the picture and sound quality is great. I am sticking with my beat up VHS, which has been viewed at least 50 times. I usually don't use a "mono-comp-
atible vhs" for my system, but, eh. I like the new scenes, but I'm not paying a full price just for a few extra scenes, and better picture quality. What aggrivates me is that this dvd
was re-released, and it was just for slightly better picture quality, which was not the dvd's problem, if you look on Amazon. I would like the picture and sound quality of the digitally mastered dvd in widescreen with the deleted scenes, a possible alternate ending, commentary, trailers, and maybe a 10 minute featurette, thus making this a standard dvd. You don't release a classic in only its directors cut, and release it again, in its directors cut. This directors cut is pretty bad. It's 5 mins. shorter than the origional classic. If your messing with a classic, and it comes out anything less, release both versions. This dvd has been released again for better picture quliity. Look around, Michael, THAT IS NOT THE PROBLEM!!!!!

Summary: Disappearing Act?
Review: I loved the movie when I saw it in the theatre, but I was so disappointed that several scenes had been cut from this new edition. The original film is 122 minutes. The "expanded version" is 117 minutes - that's five missing minutes!

What happened to the lovely song by Clannad, "I will find you?" Where is the line, "Someday you and I are going to have a serious disagreement?" How about when Hawkeye asks Duncan if he has nothing better to do on the lake that day? Where did that go? Also, I thought there was a big scene where Hawkeye and Cora talked about the fact that if only one of them survived, the spirit of the other one would also live.

These were all powerful scenes that would've made the DVD better. The editing was very poor. In one scene, right after Cora and Hawkeye first kiss, etc, the screen actually freezes before going to the next scene where Hawkeye is taken into custody. It's not even "movie of the week" quality at that point.

I'm at a loss as to where to get the complete movie in a modern version. I don't usually do VHS, but if it means I get the movie in full, I can make an exception. Was Mr. Mann having a bad day when he made these editing decisions? That's all I can figure.

Summary: Excellent DVD
Review: I am writing this in reply to "dmw" from Washington state who called the dvd "poor". I am an avid fan of LOTM. I first saw it when it was released on video (1992 or 1993), I own the video, and have seen the VHS version at least 20 times. I recently bought the new "Director's expanded edition" dvd and was highly impressed by it.First of all, details seem so much clearer than the VHS. Scenes that seem dark on VHS (like the shooting of the stag at the beginning, the Indian burial ground scene, and the siege at Ft. William Henry) were much lighter and showed more detail. I could see individual leaves on trees and blades of grass. The detail in the dvd is incredable.Secondly, the extra scenes put in are not a detraction, but rather additions. Some of the extra scenes I really liked were: a lot more fighting at the fort, the parley between Montcalm and Monroe is twice as long as in the VHS, this new DVD shows the French actually marching into the fort cheering as they take possession of it, and lastly, the final scene of Chingachook praying ends with an extra exchange between him and Hawkeye about the unstoppable white man who will continue to push the red man west. "One day there will be no frontier... but once we were here." It is excellent. Most of these new additions have musical scores, a few do not. But they did not stick out like sore thumbs. The entire movie cannot have music behind it. I did notice the absence of a few lines, particulary where Hawkeye tells Duncan "Someday you and I are gonna have a serious disagreement" and "Have you nothing better to do on the lake today Major?" But these omissions are trivial when compared to the added detail and extra scenes. Overall, I thought the dvd version flowed very well, and added to the overall experience of the movie. LOTM has always been one of my favorite movies, now thanks to this expanded edition dvd, I like it even better. It was worth every penny.

Summary: A great movie spoiled.
Review: Disappointing editing choices make this version of the film weaker then the original theatrical release. Certain powerful momemts from the film are now just plain missing.

Summary: A Terrific Movie
Review: This is a very good movie set during the French and Indian War. The movie captures the essence of the time and the growing independent attitude of the colonists. Strong characters abound in this movie and play off each other very well. The battle scenes are intense and the growing love between Cora and Hawkeye is engrossing.

The backdrop of this film and the mountains that it occurs in are unbelievably beautiful. The musical score along with the visual depications are very pleasing to the senses. I enjoyed the music so much, I bought the soundtrack too. The final scene climaxes in a way that will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat.

The only fault I could find in this movie was that while watching it, time seemed to pass too quickly. It ran less than 2 hours and I would have liked more, but what I got was great! I highly recommend this movie.
