Summary: They don't make movies like this anymore
Review: BTILC is one of the best action flicks of the 80's - up there with Predator, Commando, and VERY few others. It's got puns and bad jokes galore, and never stops being interesting or fun to watch.
The characters are all very memorable, and probably suit the actors better than the actors suit their characters. To this day I refer to most of the cast by their character name, and not their real name. I may never remember who James Hong is, but tell me "hey, there's Lo-Pan", and I'll instantly know who you're talking about.
Overall, excellent film, one of the best films of the 80's as well.

Review: boy, when you are a kid with an imagination, this film works very very well. i had some great adventures imagined against those three magical warriors as a kid. but as an adult, i didnt enjoy it as much. oh well. it is a great campy film though.

Review: This special edition is the kind of collection that would convince any stubborn friend of yours that doesn't want to ditch thier VHS tapes yet, that they are gonna be missing out on the addicting and fun world of DVD. In shorter terms, this is a must own DVD. First, the movie. This movie is what I call a comfort movie. A movie that you have seen so many times it's just like that old blanket, or beer mug you could never get rid of. I grew up watching this movie on HBO, and up until this release wherever it popped up on cable, so when I was able to watch it for the first time on this version it was like being reintroduced to the movie. The video looks great, and it is so incredible to finally see this movie presented in widescreen. I won't go to crazy with a review of the movie, because if you've seen it you more than likely loved it, or you need to kick back and reintroduce yourself to one of the funnest movies of the 80's. If you haven't seen this movie yet, here's a little advice: Don't take this movie too seriously. I think somehow this movie got lost in the shuffle because people thought Kurt Russell was supposed to be the "hero" of the movie. Instead, he plays one of the most original and funny roles I have ever seen. A movie that keeps getting better with repeat viewings. Now, on to more of the DVD features. The sound is great. I enjoyed the commentary with Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Carpenter can be kind of laid back at times, but listening to these guys jabber about the good times they had making this movie made me appreciate the movie a bit more. Disc 2 includes deleted scenes, trailers and t.v. spots, a cool featurette, interviews, photos, production notes, and a cheesy music video with John Carpenter and his band of Sci-fi geeks, it's great. ...Do yourself a favor and pick this one up because they don't make movies like this anymore. Long live Jack Burton and the Pork Chop Express!

Summary: Hitch Your Wagon to This Little Ditty.
Review: I remember having watched this film several times on cable when I was a kid. I couldn't remember much about the plot, but I did remember it had some of the best movie martial arts fight scenes I had ever seen. There were a couple of occassions when some of the neighborhood gang attempted to repeat the stunts we had seen. I mention this little ancedote because it pretty much sums up BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. The film itself doesn't make much sense (unless you know a lot about Chineese mysticism) and is really too complicated to discuss here, but it isn't necessary do so anyway.The movie is a comical action flick. It's sort of a parody of the typical American western, but set in ancient China. The film is remembered not for it's story, but for it's action. The fighting scenes I saw as a kid have remained with me and those same scenes have influenced lots of Hollywood filmmakers. If you think the action scenes in THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON are original, think again. John Carpenter did those stunts first about fifteen years before. Kurt Russell is hilarious to watch as the truck-driving, John Wayne spoof, Jack Burton. He's so stupid and conceited that he's totally oblivious to all that's going around him. Of course, most of the movie is told from his perspective because just like Jack, when it comes to Eastern mysticism, most of us are totally clueless. Kim Cattrall, as Jack's love interest, Gracie Law, was never hotter than she was here. She's a smart, intelligent woman but her film career reached it's zenith here and it's not too hard to figure out why. As previously mentioned, the action is awesome and is what largely drives the movie. However, the characters are a lot of fun to watch too. Overall, a fun mind candy movie to stimulate the Eastern part of your brain.

Summary: The best John Wayne impression ever and great effects...
Review: make this one of my favorite movies. Russell manages to lampoon the Duke without insulting him. The mock heroic laughs combined with state of the art (for 1986) special effects make for a "rattlin' good yarn" to quote a former President. Filled with impressively choreographed fight scenes that clearly influenced everything from the Matrix to Crouching Tiger, the movie lacks nothing except the traditionally tacked on, gratuitous Hollywood "love story." A guy's movie all the way, women are gonna hate it. Unless, like my wife, yours likes the Three Stooges. The she just might! I must also confess a personal connection with this movie. My martial arts instructor at the time was personally involved both on scene and behind the cameras. As for the 2 Disk DVD set, the extra scenes are interesting as is the commentary but, for those of us with smaller TVs, a less drastic, cinematically "faithful" aspect ratio would have been nice to include. "Shrek" thankfully did this and I wish the studio had done so with this film.

Summary: Great Movie, Great DVD
Review: What a classic 80's movie. Kurt Russell stars as Jack Burton, a truck driver who falls into a plot by a Lo Pan, a mystical figure. Lo Pan is actually the owner of a wealthy export company, who wants to gain power as a sorcerer - to do so, he has to marry a rare Chinese woman with green eyes. Russell and his Chinese friends battle Lo Pan, his henchmen, and other demons. Fabulous movie. The DVD itself is great, with commentary, trailers, ads, deleted scenes, and more. My only beef is that you have no option for a fullscreen. However, if you're any kind of fan of Carpenter or Kurt Russell... buy this movie. Fun, fun, fun!

Kurt Russell was especially brave to sacrifice his ego and play Jack Burton, a legend in his own mind. Those nerdy glasses must have taken some serious courage (How do you do ma'am? Henry Swanson's my name...)!
John Carpenter and Kurt Russell's commentary is almost as much fun as the movie itself. It is obvious that they had a great experience making this movie, even though the producers and other studio types didn't quite 'get it'. Can you believe they didn't think Russell's character was heroic enough? HAHAHAHA!
Despite the occassional tangents where our guys catch up about each other's kids and lives (although these personal glimpses are really kinda sweet:), mostly they just laugh about the movie and the great time they had making it. Here's to all of us that 'get it', and may our clueless hero infect others with his quirky charm.

Review: i LOVE this movie! it has been, and continues to be, one of my favorite guilty pleasures. kurt russel is brilliant as jack burton, throwing out quotable one-liners left and right. the story is simple but engaging and fun. there's plenty of action, excitement and special effects (pretty good for the mid-80s), but it never gets too serious. there's a punchline around almost every turn. and for all those john carpenter/kurt russell fans out there, i highly recommend the director's commentary on this film as well as on "The Thing-Special Edition"DVD. john and kurt have a great rapport and avoid the mistake of making a boring narrative. you can hear john lighting his cigar and kurt pouring his drink in the background...you know they're just in it to have a good time. "'Have you paid your dues, Jack?' Yes sir, the check is in the mail."
