Summary: where to start?
Review: This one has it all. Action, thrills and plenty of blood and gore. Fans of the genre will definitely get a kick out of this movie.

Summary: A Plausible, Frightening Future.....
Review: This impeccable movie presents an all-too-believable future vision for planet earth. An incredibly-powerful, profoundly-alien race of space beings is conducting all-out war on earth, and has transformed it utterly. Only military veterans are eligible for "citizenship" and the vote. Civilians are reduced to the rank of tourist. A profound gulf exists between the two groups.

The movie justifies this change, where it takes every bit of their energy for child-warriors to engage and fight the implaccible foe. The communal lifestyle, the violence, the military stance of society and the government are all necessary if we are to engage the foe, if we are to have any chance of winning the war.

And the movie successfully supports the changes in society. The foe is surely the deadliest conceivable, and the dedication to its eradication is utterly necessary.

Along the way, we meed gifted young actors, stunning computer animation, great action-adventure, and a fine story. This is one heck of a film, and bears repeated watchings with grace and excitement.

Summary: Save your money and yourselves!
Review: C'mon guys! This opinion of "intellectually silly" is really....silly. The idea that if you intentionally make a move so ludicrous that somehow it MUST have an intellectual undertone is insulting to those of us who really do know "Intellectual comedy"(i.e. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead). The idea that a solar system located about 10,000 light years away can shoot "bug bombs" acroos the galaxy in a couple of months time is ascenine. Couple that with "Melrose Place in Space" mentality and you have this...ahem...picture. The only thing missing was Jim Varney (aka Ernest Worl) as "Der Fuherer"...to make so satrical as to make it intellectually intriguing...yeah, right...

Summary: A movie I enjoyed for the wrong reasons . . .
Review: Let's not beat around the bush here- this is not a good movie. It's bad. In fact, very bad. However, it's bad in a good way. I'll explain:

There is, in my opinion, such a thing as a good bad movie. What is a good bad movie? Well . . . you'll know it when you see it. Unlike bad bad movies, you actually enjoy a good bad movie. You just enjoy it for all of the wrong reasons. "Starship Troopers" is the ultimate bad movie.

Based on the classic sci-fi novel by Robert Heinlen, Troopers is the story of a group of soldiers sent to fight on another planet against a bunch of really big and nasty bugs. I have never read the novel personally, but I hear from those who have that Heinlen's portrayal of what space combat would be like in the future is totally butchered by the film's producers who opted for a lower-tech (and probably easier to film) look to the Troopers weaponry. The problem is hard to overcome. This may be the future, and these guys may be fighting from spaceships in orbit, but they are equipped with weaponry that looks like it was used in WW2. I also sense that the book's ending was more interesting than here, which was clearly designed to set up a series of some sort.

Where did this movie fail? The script phase is a pretty good place to point the finger. It's nothing short of terrible. Cliched dialogue, overdone lines, a weird story structure, etc. The Archie-Betty-Veronica character dynamic between Johnny, Dizzy and Carmen at the start of the film was pretty silly too. It's hard to regard a movie as a serious exploration of warfare when the actors seem like they are reading lines for "Beverly Hills 90210". It's also hard to take a movie seriously when you get to see male and female soldiers showering together.

Acting? Michael Ironside and Clancy Brown are both good in supporting roles as the troopers' commander and drill sergeant, respectively. Everyone else? Well, this is not a film which will spawn many acting careers. Denise Richards? I'll give her this- she looks good in a tanktop. Darn good. Otherwise, the less said the better. Dina Meyer? Casper Van Diem? Neil Patrick Harris? I've seen them in better roles.

I feel bad for Paul Verhoven too. He's a good director. He deserves a better script than this.

Music is fine. Basil Poleduris did a brilliant score for "The Hunt For Red October" and his music does a wonderful job complimenting the action scenes.

But do not get me wrong. I enjoyed "Starship Troopers" immensely. It was a great movie in some respects, just for all of the wrong reasons.

Summary: It was the best of action, it was the worst of acting
Review: Actually, I thought Clancy Brown and Michael Ironside did a very good job as Sgt. Zim and Rasczak, respectively. When I went to see this movie, I was in the mindset to see special effects and action, not Oscar winning performances. If you want Oscar winning performances, go see "The Green Mile" or "The Hurricane", but if you want heart stopping special effects and mind-blowing action, see this movie. I heard many references to "Beverly Hills, 90210"; I have never watched the show but I can say that seeing the young actors, of whom I have never seen before except for Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris), was refreshing for me. This movie was nominated for special effects and deservedly so because they are amazing. If you are the sqeemish kind, stay home and watch "Little House on the Praire" and leave this movie to bold at heart.

Summary: Like the book in title only
Review: I watched this movie hoping to see an at least semi accurate retelling of the book. What i got however was speacil effect laden tripe, with an asinine soap opera subplot, thrown in for no conceivable reason. The acting is well, bad. It reminds me of watching beveraly hills 90210 with giant bugs in it. I suppose that the pourpose that casting director had in mind when choosing these "actors" was to provide a reasonable exscuse to display the special effects. I think that maybe I could have stomached the bad acting had it not been for the first degree homicide that was inflicted upon the original story. Trust me the co-ed shower scene, and the main guy character's, and the main girl cahracter's tent scene, were not in the original plot. These were thrown in only to attract kids to the movie. Actually the only reason I gave two stars to this extended made for tv movie was the fact that the sound and visual effects were pretty to look at. In short, only get this movie if you've never read the book, or are easily entertained.

Summary: A Great Alien Movie
Review: A Great film without special effects. Not brilliant acting but good story and some excellant gore too which you dont see that often in a movie like this. As inspiring as when I first was Aliens. A must for Sci Fi fans.

Summary: Shouldn't have been named starship troopers
Review: This movie was supposedly based on the book Starship Troopers, but it wasn't. The book was incredibly different and the only thing that remained the same were a few of the characters. The book was one of the best books I've ever read, it had an awesome message, and the movie was really cool, but I recommend the book, not the movie.

Summary: Some of you need to lighten up, it is amusing...
Review: Sure, the plot was mediocre at best, and the acting...well, no one lost any sleep over Casper or Denise failing to earn Academy nominations, but it was a fun "no-brainer". It really was. Because sometimes you just want to sit back, drink a beer, and not have to really concentrate on what's going on in the movie. And this is definately one you don't have to follow too closely.

But IT IS entertaining...probably not a good choice for the youngsters (what do I know? I'm not a mother), but the cats and I thoroughly enjoyed and continue to enjoy this one (I did buy it!).

So, what I'm trying to say to those of you who have reviewed this one so harshly: "Don't watch it again; try not to even think about it, if it is such an insult to your intelligence."

But there are those of us who enjoy this kind of movie every now and then, and we are still able to think and chew gum at the same time! :)

Summary: The best movie ever!
Review: When I heard what the movie was about, I figured that all it was was another boring and icky movie that I wouldnt like....Well 1 night I was watching Showtime and the movie was just starting. I watched it. I laughed, screamed, and even cryed, you know when Diz died(Dina Meyer). I couldnt believe how much I loved the movie and that is why I gave it 5 stars.
