Summary: It doesn't get much worse than this
Review: Batman & Robin is probably tied with Armageddon on my list of worst movies ever made. I cannot even start describing how bad it is.Maybe I should start with the poor casting and script. George Clooney is not a convincing Batman, and he will probably be remembered as the George Lazenby of Batmen. Michael Gough returns, and his character is actually essential to the plot now. Arnold Schwarzenneger gave up some good roles to play Mr. Freeze, and it looks like he made a poor choice. The Mr. Freeze of the comics was very cerebral, while the movie version is nothing like that. The script is just awful. The dialogue is cliche and repetitive, with Mr. Freeze inserting the word "ice" in place of just about any imaginable curse word. There are a lot of sub plots going on. Batgirl wants to save Alfred, Mr. Freeze is trying to cure his wife, and Poison Ivy will stop at nothing to unleash her brand of environmental terror. Everything is just so over the top that its hard to take the movie seriously. It's hard to see why Joel Schumacher dropped the ball so badly after he did a good job on Batman Forever. The special effects and the style of the sets are very similar to those of the previous movie. The only difference is that the pyrotechnics and sound effects are overdone and become annoying. This movie seems to draw its influence from the campy 60's TV show more than the Batman comic. This movie is an insult to the Batman comic and a horrible waste of acting talent. Watch this only as a study in how not to make an action movie.

Review: I don't know what is left to say about this film. (...) This movie stinks. It is smelly. It needs a shower. I don't know what anyone involved with this movie was thinking. I also don't know how many zero's Warner Bros. put on the paychecks of all the people involved to get them to degrade themselves like this. It really is a god-awful movie. It is way too long and the effects are so hokey (Look! Ice that bends! Neato!). All the action sequences are fake. The actors are at their all-time low. I love Arnold to death, but come on, I would have taken a Kindergarten Cop sequel over this anyday. The scenery is overkill, I think Batman Forever was better because it wasn't so harsh on the eyes, but giant hollow naked statues? Someone's got to draw the line here folks.

Summary: If I Could Give It Zero Stars, I Would
Review: Batman is such an awesome character. He's dark, mysterious, serious, intelligent, exciting. . .well, at least he's supposed to be. He's not any of those things in this movie. Well, what is he then? Shallow? Dense? Comic relief where none is needed? This Batman movie is absolute [bunk]. It's like a bad rip-off of Batman. If anyone knows anything about Bane, you know that he is actually thinking, mastermind. He's the one who broke Batman in the book, "Batman: Knightfall and Beyond," by Alan Grant. He's not supposed to be some big dumb, drooling hulk. They totally wrecked his character. Alfred is truly the only good one in this film. But then again, Alfred's always good. Don't buy this movie. It's a waste of good money.

Summary: Oh dear God, what have they done......?!
Review: With "Batman Forever(1995)" Warner Bros. decided to take the Batman franchise in a much lighter direction, more "kid-freindly", if you would. What emerged was a flashy, shallow, tepid Comic movie, lacking the psycholigical, and overall adult-oriented approach of Tim Burton's first two films. And while Burton's films can be seen as >character studys/social satires-consisting of Burton's consistancy of theme and explortion of-"the Outsider"<, Shumacher's film, when one happens to dig a little deeper, represents his own inflatuation with Batman. The Riddler being Schumacher-The Riddler being obssessed with Batman. It's sorta like some of the many hidden agendas of Director James Whale's "The Invisible Man(1933)", but please lets at least spare Whale for NOT comapring him to Shucmacher. Besides there was a difference--Whale was a genious, Shucmacher was a happy-hack at best. Anyways, lets get back at the subject at hand. Now Batman Forever--as a comic book film adaption, it pretty much is a piece of rut. As a movie in general, on a technical standpoint-it was well made, and can be quit entertaining. So lets just say it's a good ol' popcorn movie at best, providing some good harmless fun. Now "Batman & Robin", not only is it the piece of rut "Batman Forever" was, but techincally there are no saving graces what so ever. The film is poorly executed at best, the editing job it just plain Horrid! And aside of Michael Gough's wonderful perfomance as the dying Alfred Pennyworth, the acting is more wooden then a baseball-bat. Once again the film features false characterizations-Like "Batman Forever"-Mr. Freeze is not some flameing Ice-cap who goes around spewing out corny one-liners. But a very-serious, cold tragic villian who only yearns for to be with is wife again, even if that means taking the lives of others(Pick up and read a Batman comic book, and then you'll know what I'm talking about,...better yet, if one would actually go out of their way to reading a Batman comicbook, they would have the common sense to know THIS is NOT Batman-period!)

Summary: AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE
Review: This is a truly awful movie, recently voted the worst "blockbuster" ever made in a recent British movie magazine poll (Total Film), nominated for 10 Razzies back in '98 and starring Arnie (at that time the worlds most popular movie star) at his most wooden, as Mr Freeze. It really is that bad, it's so bad it gives bad a bad name. It has no plot to speak of, the dialogue is truly awful, the action scenes are ridiculous, Alicia Silverstone's character is pointless (and won her a Razzie for worst supporting actress), Uma Thurman is awful (and in a possible career sinking move, she followed this up with The Avengers), Chris O'Donnell is his usual forgettable uncharismatic self, George Clooney is wasted and it is more CAMP than a gay convention, although the costumes and the sets (as ever) look great. It is Joel Schumacher at his worst. It is so bad that this movie nearly killed the careers of all it's leading stars and its Director as well as the Batman franchise which it has set it back a number of years. Poor George Clooney initially took most of the flak for this movies failure (although it still took $230million worldwide) and critical mauling on its theatrical release but has since proved what a fine screen actor he is. Blame for this awful mess lies squarely on the shoulders of two men: Joel Schumacher, the Director whose vanity project this was and Akiva Goldsman who wrote a truly truly embaressingly awful script. With lines delivered by the Austrian Oak such as "Allow me to break the ice. My name is freeze. It is the chilling sound of your doom." this really is one to avoid like the plague.

Summary: Simply Embarrassing
Review: This is the movie that drove the stake through the Batman film franchise, stuffed its mouth with garlic, cut off its head, and pulled its corpse out into the sun to rot. And there's plenty of blame to go around, but surely most of it lies in the directorial hands of Joel Schumacher, who squandered every bit of credibility he ever banked with St. Elmo's Fire in this monstrosity. How else can we understand the incredibly bad acting--only Michael Gough, as butler Alfred Pennyworth, deserves to hold his head high--and excruciating storyline and dialogue. This Batman film plays like a lengthy, expensive version of the insipid but campy TV series with Adam West, and at times George Clooney is eerily and sickeningly reminiscent of West. The opening sequence, in which Mr. Freeze and his "hockey team from hell" steal an enormous diamond ("Ice", get it?) and end up skating around Batman and Robin (who had on their own bat-skates) using the diamond as a hockey puck literally made my stomach sink with disappointment. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, whose work on the original Batman film was so distinguished, surely must have felt the same. Only the costume designers shined in this film, and they were certainly overworked. Why, in Batman and Robin and in Batman Forever (its predecessor) did the "green" character (Poison Ivy and the Riddler) have to change costumes every chance they got, and why, when Batman, Robin, and Batgirl have less than 11 minutes to thaw out Gotham City, do they stop to change costumes themselves? And the almost fetishistic shots of rubber-clad Bat-butts and Bat-groins (Poison Ivy even makes a comment about anatomically correct rubber suits!) really made me cringe in embarrassment for all of Hollywood. Okay, I know I am not approaching this film with the mindset the director wishes me to (total idiocy), but the thing about the Batman character was that he was the ONLY "superhero" without super-powers, making him ever so much more believable than say, Superman. In the original comic book and first film we only needed to suspend our disbelief a little bit, but Schumacher totally destroyed that quality. As the Batman films became increasingly overpopulated with superheroes and supervillains and impossible supergadgetry, there is less and less a place for interesting plot, dialogue, and characterization. In fact, this was the reason that both Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer gave up the title role. So much went wrong by the time the last two Batman films were made that they even got the titles wrong--with the addition of Alicia Silverstone's character why wasn't it called "Batman, Robin and Batgirl"; and the franchise has proven not to be "Batman Forever", but instead "Batman No More". Given the promise of the first Batman film, this is a pity indeed.
