Summary: Awesome Movie that is still great after 7 years
Review: I remember being a young one playing the video games, then watching the movie and loving it. This is a lot better than Annihalation. Annihalation was good for dragging on the series, but the movie was very uninteresting. Anywho, the fighting is great in this movie.

Cage Sonya Lui Kang vs Thug people - this was a really kewl fight, with a first glimpse of what Lui Kang can fight like. Johnny has some awesome moves in this, so does Sonya. 8/10.

Lui Kang vs unknown black dude with long hair - the first real tournament fight. I liked the mix of fighting with weapons. I dont like it when the fight suddenly turns into "slow motion", it looks so dumb. I guess it was just a way to make the fight seem longer. 6/10

Sonya vs Kano - This fight was boring, and short. The fighting was just little punches and kicks. [...]. 4/10

Johnny Cage vs Scorpion - THis was an awesome fight. It was so fast paced, every second their would be atleast 3-4 punches kicks being thrown. Scorpion dominates the first half, then Johnny unleashes some rage when Scorpion tries his fatality. Pretty kewl. 9/10

Lui Kang vs Subzer0 - This was a pretty good fight too. Too bad it was a little short. Subzero does a lot of crazy flips and [stuff]. 7/10

Lui Kang vs Kitana - I didn't really understand this part too much. It wasn't really a fight, but it was, sort of. A lot of blocking. 6/10

Johnny Cage vs Goro - This fight was short. It was kind of funny in the beginning. 6/10.

Lui Kang vs Reptile - This is an awesome fight. Fights where the good guy get's the crap beaten out of him in the beginning, then amazingly comes back in the end and kicks the crap out of the bad guy, those are some good fights. A very fast paced fight. 10/10

Lui Kang vs Shang Tsung - Awesome fight. Lots of fast paced fighting int he beginning. Ends with Lui Kangs signature trick thing, the fireball into the Pit. 7/10.

Summary: This is a gem if you're not taking it too seriously...
Review: As is often the case, computer games don't transform into good movies. That's logical. Then how on Earth did they manage to make this movie?

Simply. First, don't take it too seriously. Second, get new young actors/fighters, pretty girls/fighters and one solid star as the bait for the gullible. Third, don't spend too much money on special effects. It'll all look silly anyhow.

And finally, direct it like a video for pumping techno/metal soundtrack.

Now that I wrote this, it's even more amazing how did they pull it off. There is virtually no story but series of fights, coreographed, executed and filmed just like a video game.
But... it works.

The best bit is the "cooler-than-reservoir-dogs" introduction of Johnny Cage, the worst bit is a hairdo of Robin Shou.

Don't forget! Actors didn't take it seriously. SFX guys didn't take it seriously. Screenwriter didin't take it seriously. Director didn't take it seriously.

So how can you take it seriously?

Favourite line: "Let's dance."

Summary: The only good game based movie
Review: The premise of Mortal Kombat was never simple, the game got a lot of attention for its brutal gore, but the original was backed by a complex storyline about a demon sorceror trying to unbalance the Earth's furies so that his evil emporer could enter the realm of earth and take over. The storyline focused mostly on Lui Kang, the decendant of a shaolin munk who had been a great warrior and was defeated by Shang Tsung in an earlier tournament. Although the movie does change some elements of the story it still remains completely faithful to the spirit and story of teh original game. It follows the plot very closely, albiet less focus on Scorpion and Sub Zero, and for some odd reason they negelected to mention that Sub Zero was a good guy and that he was killed by Scorpion, but that's okay, it still remains faithful to the game. The dialogue is tounge-in-cheek, and there are some great one liners, and the movie version resembles the plot of Enter the Dragon. All in all this is how a game to movie translation should be done, although it would have been nice to see more of the classic power moves (fireballs and such) it still plays out very well. Its a shame that more game movies can't be this good.

Summary: Childish Action
Review: When I was young and stupid, me and my friends were OBBSESSED with this movie. We bought the video games, the action figures, we watched this movie OVER AND OVER, hell, we even loved the not-so-good sequel, Annilation. Now, about 4 or something years later...and recently bought a PS2, and since I used to like this movie so much, why ... not buy the DVD, for "old-time's sake"? And that, my friends, is what I did. I didn't enjoy it near as much as I would've 4 years ago, basically because now I realize it's based towards a younger audeance. Most of the fight scenes are short and somewhat...boring. They all in an attempted "climatic and dramatic" way, which is not really so much of that, but maybe it's just me. Anyway, I reccomend this to kids ages 4-9, if you're allowed to at that age............I MISS THOSE ...DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: Not bad at all
Review: Considering all of the horrible movies that have been adapted from video games like Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, Double Dragon, and Super Mario Bros., this was the best one (at least until Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within came out, which I strongly recommend). Fans of the Mortal Kombat video game series will either love or hate the movie, but I for one really liked it. The special effects are great for a movie made in 1995, the fight scenes are decent, and Christopher Lambert is fantastic as Rayden. While the sequel is utterly horrible, I suggest checking out Mortal Kombat if you haven't allready.

Summary: A silly film I find myself still enjoying.
Review: I think some of the negative reviewers are taking this movie way too seriously. I actually saw this movie in the theatre because I ejoyed the video games(hey, i was just a 14 year old kid at the time). What's most surprising about it is that it has been translated from video game to cinematic format quite well, unlike other disasters such as Street Fighter, Double Dragon and Super Mario Brothers. As others have pointed out, the plot is rather thin, but at least it makes sense(unlike the dreadful sequel which i'll get to later) and follows the story from the video game just fine. While the actors don't deliver oscor caliber performances, they all play their characters quite convincingly. Ashby Linden(not a very well known actor) does a fantastic job as Johnny Cage with hilarous lines and that certain snirk Cage needs. He holds the film together and keeps it interesting/entertaining when there isn't a fight scene happening. Christopher Lambert is also good as Rayden, and believe me, I'm no Christopher Lambert fan beyond the Highlander movies. What truly makes this movie great is director Paul Anderson's attention to detail. He's clearly a fan of the games and it shows. Every set, as well as the outdoor shots are beautiful and well designed, the fights are quite impressive and the high energy techno-metal soundtrack is excellent. The CGI is also very good for the time(1995). One thing that's really disappointing is the lack of blood and gore that made the games so incredibly popular. There's virtually no blood in the movie in order keep a PG-13 rating. There's rarely any fatalities and the few that are in the movie are very tame. If you're expecting to see people have their hearts ripped out or their head and spine pulled out of their body, you should just go play the games instead. You aren't going to get that here. However, the characters, sets, music, fights etc. are very loyal to the games and save the movie. As I mentioned I saw the movie in the theatre and I've also seen it on video several times and recently on tv. I find it's still entertaining and holds up pretty well after 7 years. In many ways it's like an early Matrix, except the story isn't as good.

Like others have pointed out, the DVD release isn't too impressive. However, if you own a large screen tv and surround sound system it's definitely worth buying. The visual and audio aspects of the film will make it quite an enjoyable DVD experience. If you're home on a Saturday night with nothing to do, pop it in the player and crank the sound up. I think you'll find it quite exciting. Personally I think the movie is worth owning, but at least give it a rent sometime. Just don't take it too seriously and I think you'll find it to be a good action/martial arts/fantasy movie.

(...)

I understand they're putting together a third movie right now. I just hope for the sake of the fans of the video game and the first movie, that it's an improvement over MK: Annihilation. I can't imagine any movie being worse than that one, so hopefully they'll be able to improve on it and make a worthy sequel of the first movie even if it's just a straight to video release.

Review: This movie is fine. It's also pretty cool. I like the martial arts as well as the music. The fight scenes are what keep you jumping. I like how Christifer Lambert plays Raidine. I also like the way Prince Goro is in the film. Wow! this is a great film. This film is one that'll make you move. I'm not kidding! It can do that. I like how Sonya annihilates Cano. I also have the next MK film. All and all! this is a great film. Highly recommended for any future MK fans.

Summary: Take it for what it is....
Review: I have seen a lot of Game-to-movie ideas. And so far, this is the only one that holds water. Some rag on it for the simple fact that it's Mortal Kombat. And that may be a valid point... but just how deep can you make a movie based on a fighting game? Give it credit, it's the ONLY "game-movie" that's moderately interesting... the sequel induces fits of nausea and insanity. We think Paul Anderson should have quit while he was ahead. The sequel was a prime example of "milking a franchise." Avoid it like the plague, and watch the Mortal Kombat movie that was actually worth a damn... the first one.
