Summary: A Disturbing Subject Doesn't Make A Daring Film
Review: I've read reviews saying this is the most daring movie of 1999 but come on people just because it deals with a disturbing subject doesn't mean it's a daring film. Nick Cage's character was a brown nosed wimp who had Hollywood textbook reactions to everyone and everything. I don't even know why the writer had this character carrying a gun considering how scared and involuntary he was of using it, some pepper spray or a big "HELP" sign would have suited him better. If you want a story about a great PI then I suggested you refrain from buying or renting this movie and pick up a book from Robert B Parker's Spencer series. Read anything with Spencer in it then you'll be able to compare what a naive wimp Cage's character is.

Summary: It's more than "just okay".
Review: Just finished watching the movie. It is actually a fine one, I'd say. The plot is interesting; the acting is good. Though there isn't a cheerful ending, it gives a thoughtful closing. You should watch it alone and at night so you can have a better theatrical mood.

Review: 8mm is a great movie. I loved it, even though most critics thought it was trash. The film had some of the greatest villians ever to grace the screen. It was just a really good, really dark and really creepy movie. Fantastic.

Summary: Why? - another example of media gone bad
Review: Simply put, this movie self-destructs. All that can be said is that it must have read well in script format. The issues that it brings up demands a director with better respect for the intelligence of any audience. Considering the self-importance of the director audio - anyone who respects the idea of film exploring serious issues will note the instructional value of what not to do. One can't blame the actors/writers on this vanity project. One wishes that function meant more than form here - Although not perfect, spend your money on "Summer of Sam "instead ... atleast Spike tries that little bit harder and respects an audience more.

Summary: utter dreck
Review: Andrew Kevin Walker who wrote the fine "Seven" stumbles here. But he had help. The film, a lurid journey through the sexual netherworld, becomes bogged down almost immediately by starchy dialogue and forced performances. Nic Cage painfully overacts here. See his reactions while watching the eponymous film alone, unable to voice his disgust. Or the way he wipes his fingers on his coat after handling pornographic snapshots. Hardly subtle. Schumacher must shoulder some blame here. From behind the camera he must have seen his actors getting away from their roles and should have reined them in some. Self-conscious editing unfortunately does not distract enough from a story that decends into simple-minded gratuitousness and revenge fantasy. And an annoying sub-plot involving his wife mars the film further. One element of "8mm" that intrigues is the music, a blend of contemporary Middle Eastern rythyms, though it has no place in this film.

Summary: You'll never forget this one, like it or not
Review: Most disturbing film I've seen recently--not only for its misanthropy (although, since it was written by the same man who wrote "Se7en", that shouldn't surprise anybody) but for its revelations of a sick subgenre that I would rather not have known of (and the next review on this page is truly frightening). Still, the material is oddly compelling; the knowledge I took away from it is that violent pornography has nothing, really, to do with sex, but with the use of sex as a tool of violence and power. However, there is some clumsiness in the story: too many coincidences (the diary in the toilet, finding the girl in the film's missing persons file so easily, etc.) and a silly 'chase' scene set in a villain's dark, spooky house. Cage is too naive and wide-eyed, if you want my opinion (a hardened homicide detective would have been a better choice as main character). Still, worth catching. Just don't let the kids see it--when I saw it in the theatre, I saw a stupid couple in there with their approximately 6-year-old daughter. Way to go, Mom and Dad!

Summary: Not THE Best Nicholas Cage Movie, But Well Worth Viewing.
Review: First of all, I think Nicholas Cage is a fantastic actor. So, when I went to the theatre to see this movie, I was hoping that I wouldn't be disappointed. I wasn't the least bit disappointed, although the movie gets a little draggy at times. Through-out this picture, I couldn't help but feel for his character and the 16-year-old girl. Althought Joel Schumacher isn't a great director, he did an okay job on this film. It still bothers me that he destroyed the Batman movie series, but that's a different subject. In the end, if you like Nicholas Cage, don't mind Joel Schumacher, or the type of person who doesn't mind watching a movie with a weird ending (I'm trying not to giveaway the ending), watch this movie.

Summary: for those of us who can't look away from the car crash
Review: this movie is definatly not for everyone. Sure it bears some similarity to the GREAT movie SEVEN, but it deals with a different aspect of human nature. Nic Cage's character is a fairly normal man who finds himself in way over his head in a world that he didn't know existed. The after effects of which drive him to a point at which there seems to be no returning from. This is Cage's best performance to date (narrowly beating out his work in the ROCK). And let me add a bit of morbidity for those of you who see this film: SNUFF FILMS DO EXIST, and I know a local video jocky who owns several (sick $#!+).

Summary: Disturbing, but worth watching
Review: The most meaningful thing I can say about this movie is that at the end of it, the entire cinema audience got up and left in complete silence. The only other time I have seen that is after Schindlers List. Watching Cage's character slowly try to get to grips with the appalling lack of humanity or compassion was fascinating enough, but witnessing him slowly being taken over by all he sees is morbidly compelling. At times I almost thought that I shouldn't be watching, as if I was intruding. Definitely watch this film, but don't expect to finish it with a smile on your face...

Summary: Disturbing and Thought Provoking
Review: I saw 8mm in the theatres and was completely moved by it. It's a no holds barred look at a very well concealed facet of the entertainment industry. Pornography. Specifically the film deals with a "Snuff Film" or film in which an unsuspecting person is murdered, which are still only urban legends. It's also the ultimate test of good versus evil. Where as a Character who represents the good, becomes submerged in darkness and the test is put forth of "Will the character defeat this darkness and overcome it, or will he/she fall prey to the temptations offered?" It's an emotional ride to the very end. It's not for the faint hearted or easily disturbed, but it will gratify the mind as well as the soul.
