Summary: Great early Wayne flick!
Review: Although this movie is very similar in plot to Wake of the Red Witch, it's a LOT better. It has a similar story about sinking a ship to get its treasure & even has an octopus sequence like Wake of the Red Witch. The difference is that while John Wayne's later B&W Red Witch is somewhat slow & boring, this movie is exciting, entertaining, in color & directed by the one & only Cecille B DeMille! Highly recommended for those seeking out a John Wayne movie they may not have seen yet!

Summary: This Film Surprised Me
Review: I enjoyed this film more than I expected to. Another reviewer called it "predictable" but I was surprised several times. Paulette Goddard is enjoyable as the spunky heroine who expects too much of John Wayne's ship captain and not enough of Ray Milland's gentleman lawyer. I too kept expecting John Wayne to display his legendary heroism, but this movie casts him in the role of the weaker man, one led to disastrous decisions through a combination of pride and stubbornness.

The supporting cast, including a young Robert Preston, provide solid backing to the leads, which is always nice. The sets and costumes are beautiful. The pace is brisk, and I never got bored.

The film won a special effects Oscar, and I'm sure the climactic underwater sequence thrilled original viewers -- but I found the rubber giant squid more silly-looking than scary, and its use as a plot device unsatisfying.

Summary: Exciting, romantic, far-fetched
Review: I liked this film better the first time I viewed it than the second time around. Paulette Goddard was good and this film evoked my interest in her as an actress. The plot involves swashbuckling types and southern belles and the premise is a little extreme, but as another reviewer said, it is good escapism fare. It does have spectacle!

Summary: John Wayne looks soooo good!
Review: I was 10 years old when I first saw this movie on TV and it was one of the first movies I saw of Jahn Wayne. He looks so good. Since then I have a little crush on him. :-)) The movie is great, good acting, wonderful costums and settings, romance and action. What do you want more of a good movie??

Summary: Good period piece. Not great, but good.
Review: Love triangle set in 1840s, with Goddard the center of affection for two men. The screenplay (which is thinly plotted and all-too-familiar) focuses too much on this particular aspect, not leaving room for some good intentions which could have made this one great. But it's directed with strong style and as usual, all three actors are at their peak, making their roles believable. Excellent special effects which won a well deserved Oscar.

Summary: Reap the Wild Wind
Review: Not recommended for anyone who finds an over abundance of machismo offensive. I liked the movie because of the time frame in which it took place, the exceptional scenery, and the costumes. It was nice to see so many well-known actors all in the same place at the same time. As far as the plot, all I can say is it was predictable, for a movie made in the 40's. On occasion, it even took a journey into something reminiscent of "Gone With the Wind." But it remained entertaining, in it's own right. It's a good thing John Wayne developed that stronger, more charming, movie persona later on or no doubt he would have ended up in the unemployment line with a lot of other weak actors. Talk about an unnoteworthy performance! Well, he'll always be "The Duke" to me! Over all I'd say not a bad movie if you're a fan of the oldies.

Summary: Great Transfer to DVD
Review: There isn't much to add to what has already been said. I saw this film for the first time at Teacher.'s College in 1968. We belonged to a film society. I had great memories of the splash and effects. The DVD transfer is phenomenal and you feel that you are watching this back in 1941. This is well worth the purchase price. You will not regret it. From the first, be prepare to boo and hiss Raymond Massey oooo he is baaaad!!
