Summary: A great story of love, struggle and survival
Review: After seeing this movie, I know how much the life is worth to live, struggle and survive. I love the words Moll say 'I have to believe I 've a reason to live for'. It is very touching.

Summary: Watch the Alex Kingston version and then decide!
Review: Although this was not a bad movie, it is a horrible adaptation of the book. It really only touches on a couple of the situations that Moll gets into. If you really want to see a fiery and sexy Moll Flanders buy the Mobile Masterpiece Version that stars Alex Kingston of "ER". It is MUCH better!

Summary: Moll gets a bun in the oven
Review: Do you remember Rizzo from Grease? Stockard Channing? Here she is a madam who sells young Moll Flanders's virginity to an old goat. Come on Rizzo. But she is quite useful in the end. Moll Flanders is abused from the start, but ends up on top, so don't be afraid to watch the many perils and mishaps of Moll Flanders.

Summary: Beautiful!
Review: First off, I have to say that I don't care if the plot of the movie is the same as the book or not. I haven't actually read the book, but a movie is a movie, and this was a good one in a category by itself. I absolutely loved the relationship between Moll and the artist (does it actually ever say his name?), it was so sad and happy at the same time. Some of the lines of the movie are simply so romantic they could make you cry by themselves (such as when Moll says to her small-pox stricken husband "If I could, I'd put my blood in you"). Coming from a girl who was raised on love stories by her mother- this is now one of my favorite "watch it again and again" movies!!

Summary: The Final Curtain For Jeremy Brett
Review: Have ANY Jeremy Brett fan's seen this movie??!! I am shocked that of all the 18 reviewers before me, NOT ONE mentioned Jeremy Brett!! This was his last screen (large or small) performance ever. I confess that when I rented this movie, I didn't watch the whole thing, and still haven't, so I won't comment on the rest of the movie. But I can't understand how people have written about how "utterly moving" the film was, and yet not mention Mr. Brett! He played the artist's father (in case you didn't know) and gave an incredible performance. You may disagree, but take this into consideration: Brett was very ill when they made this, (he died not long after, and was almost a year dead when the film was released) but manages to give a strong performance. He leapt to his feet at one point, which made many of his fans' hearts leap into their throats. He spends only a few minutes on film, but I think that he steals the scene. Like I said, I've never seen the whole film. I only rented it to see his last scene ever. I think he deserves MUCH more recognition for this than he has recieved.
Bravo, Mr. Brett. Bravo.
The world lost a fine actor...

Summary: Read the book, but don't cast this movie aside!
Review: I first read the *book* Moll Flanders when I was in eighth grade, and I loved it. Then I saw the Masterpiece Theatre adaptation of the novel, and loved that. When I saw this title at the video store, I thought I'd give it a try.

First off, as other reviewers have stated, it is nothing like the novel save the name of the main character and some of the "adventures" she has. HOWEVER, as a story it is not bad. Take a movie adaptation like "The Scarlet Letter" (with Demi Moore) or "Queen of the Damned" (with Aaliyah)--those are horrible adaptations of great books. This movie, however, is a good story in its own right, and not really an adaptation at all. The acting is good, the sets and costumes are pretty, and the plot, while not life changing, is moving and interesting.

My advice: 1)Read the book. 2)Watch the Masterpiece Theatre adaptation. 3)Watch this version, but keep an open mind and don't expect to see the same story that you read in the novel.

Summary: it's the movie, not the book that's being reviewed...
Review: I have never read the novel of Moll Flanders, and besides, that's not what we're reviewing anyway. We're reviewing the movie itself. From my unbiased opinion, I think it was a great movie, well executed from the cast members. The little girl was an astounding actress for her age, and I'm quiet surprised that I haven't seen her in any other movies. Robin Wright did very well, because, I take it, Moll is a very challenging part. Moll is a multi-faceted character and I think any actress would have a very hard time pulling off. So congradulations to Wright. And, as usual, Morgan Freeman pulls off a wonderful performance. Stockard Channing is also very good at being evil, so the part suited her well. All in all, it's a good film to rent when all of the modern stuff seems like trash.

Summary: Inspiring and Compassionate Portrayal
Review: I have not read the book and am only reviewing the movie in it's own right.
It is a warm and absorbing tale of a women who defeats all odds, through great suffering from the very beginning, and I was overjoyed to see the twist in the tale which turns a sad tale into a happy ending (I will not reveal what it is though.)

Pretty Robin Wright gives a sterling performance as Moll Flanders, with whom I felt great sympathy for throughout the movie, as she fights her way through a cruel world, as an orphan, a maidservant, a prostitute, a wife and most of all a remarkable woman.
Stockard Channing plays a role of an evil and cruel Madame with great panache, and Morgan Freeman as the narrator and a key role player holds the story together.

Summary: Forget the Title and Just Enjoy the Movie!!!!
Review: I knew nothing about this movie or the book that it's name is taken from when I watched it. I'm a big fan of both Morgan Freeman and Stockard Channing and that was all I needed to know. I found it charming and moving. Excellent casting and good performances by all characters. Having enjoyed the movie so much, I was anxious to read Defoe's novel of (basically) the same title. As a fan of classic literature, I enjoyed the book and could not see how the name had been lent to the movie. You cannot compare the two except for VERY MINOR similarities, so don't bother trying! I think this movie will be enjoyed by any fan of period films; any fan of the main stars; and any fan of a touching drama. If it didn't share the name of a great novel, it might have been well known as a great movie.
