Summary: The core really 3 1/2
Review: Interesting and though provoking movie about the earths core and it stops spinning. Hilary Swank stars in this independence day action flick. Good things about this movie are the shots of Rome and San Frasico being destroyed and great shots going throught the earths core. The bad: a bit to long with running time of about 136 minutes. Hard to understand with all the Physical science equations that they do you cant really catch on. Interesting and ok film, a lot like Armegeddon

Summary: Fun, but same old 'military coverup' stuff
Review: This movie is a lot of fun, albeit slow in many mushy parts, but if you're watching it and thinking how refreshing it is to finally see a scifi movie without a military coverup or a man vs. the environment theme ... forget it; that works for the first two-thirds of the flick then comes the depressing news ... it's the usual. Aren't there any scifi writers out there that can come up with an interesting 'natural' catastrophe without the politics? This theme is soooooo old. Anyway, we did enjoy the movie and Hillary Swank has become a very decent actress.

Review: If you are considering buying this film, go paint a wall and watch it dry instead - you'll find that much more rewarding.

Summary: I FEEL THE EARTH MOVE
Review: THE CORE is a great movie....not because it has a marvelously written script. It's a great movie because it's what you want from a disaster movie, and has a tremendously talented cast. Aaron Eckhart is marvelous as the heroic Joshua Keyes---not your typical matinee idol handsome, Eckhart has a masculine tenacity, a lot of sensitivity, and performs his role as if it were a Shakesperean oddyssey. Eckhart is the heart of the film. Stanley Tucci is appropriately snooty, self-serving and annoying, yet even he metamorphasizes into an almost hero. It's to Tucci's credit that he pulls this one off so well. D. J. Qualls as Rat is awesome in his nerdish role as the computer hacker supreme. Alfre Woodard in a small role shows why she's such a good supporting actress. Delroy Lindo is great as the shy, soft-spoken inventor who finally breaks loose in a dramatic scenario. Hilary Swank doesn't posit the "I'm an Oscar winner...let me steal this movie." She fills her role admirably and shows no signs of prima-donna hysterics. Richard Jenkins and Bruce Greenwood fill out this cast.
I liked this movie a lot, as it reminded me of those great old disaster movies like "Towering Inferno" and "Posiedon Adventure." The effects, particularly of the birds going wacky in Trafalgar Square, are great. See if you can find the trout which was included as an inside joke by director Amiel.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Summary: The specail effects are great!
Review: This was one of those movies that when I saw the preview at the theatre I first thought I will probably wait for DVD on that one. I wasn't going to rent this one at all but I thought the special effects looked pretty good. I was very surprised by this movie, first of all I was right, the special effects are fantastic.

The story is simple, we (humans/Americans) figure out that there is something wrong with the Earth. There is an abnormal problem with the natural magnetic field of the planet and it's going to destroy us. After some running around, and scientist doing this and that as scientist do, they figure out that the planets core has stopped spinning. But why? Hmmmm...so they devise a plan to fix it or everyone dies. Delroy Lindo is great as a mad scientist who has been out in the desert for the past decade doing mad scientist things and now is called upon to save the world. The acting is good; the special effects are great. I believe if you are a fan of the global disaster films (Armageddon, Deep Impact) you will definitely enjoy this one. If not for the fact that it's a disaster film then the special effects will dazzle you! The story line is so-so half way believable but not really but I think the actors, the effects and cities blowing up make up for it!

Summary: Can a team go inside Earth to the core to save the world?
Review: I really like this Paramount DVD. It offers you a choice if you want to see previews or just go right to the main menu. The core of the earth is slowing down and it is causing alot of disasterous phenomenon. Sudden traffic accidents, birds flying and hitting every thing in sight. Even the space shuttle has a problem. They must suddenly touchdown in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles River that is. A space shuttle pilot and a professor and others in a probe-like craft must go inside the Earth and reach the core to fix the problem. If the core should stop, the results would be horrific...death. Total fantasy of couse, but might be fun to watch. DVD includes deleted scenes and extended scenes.

Summary: Armageddon inside the earth
Review: The Core is an exciting disaster movie that is basically a better Armageddon and instead of being in space it is in the center of the Earth. All over the world strange things are happening that apparently have no explanation. A college professor, Dr. Joshua Keyes, discovers that the core of the Earth has stopped spinning causing numerous problems all over the world that will eventually destroy mankind. The government puts together a team of experts to go down into the Earth's core with several megatons of nuclear weapons and shock the core into spinning again. This is a pretty good movie if you can get past the fact that the story is utterly ridiculous. The characters are all pretty well developed, the action scenes are very good, and it is fun to see a computer generated image of what the middle of the Earth looks like. The story is very similar to Armageddon, some scenes are almost identical, but overall The Core is much better.

The Core boasts an excellent ensemble cast that makes the movie much better overall. Aaron Eckhart is very good as Dr. Joshua Keyes, the man who discovers what is going on. Hilary Swank is okay as the copilot of the ship, but overall I found her character kind of annoying. Delroy Lindo and Stanley Tucci are both excellent as battling scientists who have had a falling out in the past, but now must put aside their differences and work together. The movie also stars Bruce Greenwood, Tcheky Karyo, and Alfre Woodward, all in good roles. The DVD offers widescreen presentation, commentary by the director, trailers, and 10 deleted/extended scenes, some of which are very good. The Core is a good adventure disaster film that is not great, but is well worth a watch if nothing else.

Summary: It's a summer movie ...
Review: I'm not really sure how to critique a movie that never really aspires to do anything more then what's already been done before.

That said, it was made in the same mold as Independence Day, Armageddon, the list could go on forever. If you liked one, you'll probably like the other.

What it has is a believable, although ridiculous, plot, a decent performance by the cast, and pretty good special effects. It's a pop-corn movie in the true mold of one. If you're expecting ANYTHING else you're wasting your time. If all you want is a mildly interesting action movie to kill two hours, you could certainly do a lot worse.

Summary: A modern day, dumbed down Journey To The Center of the Earth
Review: I'm not a big scientist, but even I found a lot of flaws in the logic they were using. So, don't expect to be wowed by its intellictual value.

This film reminds me of "Armageddon" and "Independance Day" so if you liked those movies, you will probably like this one. Not quite as entertaining as those two, but I would say it was just about there.

Summary: Apparently You *Can* Dig Your Way To China
Review: I don't want to be too hard on The Core because I don't think it aspired to be anything more than a completely brainless sci-fi adventure film, so it shouldn't be judged as anything more than that. On that basis I think the movie succeeds. It's an intriguing concept, the special effects are decent, and as far as this kind of movie goes the characters were pretty well developed.

I could stop there, but I won't. Even if you make every reasonable concession of logic to the plotlines of The Core, you will be forced to do one of two things about an hour into this fantasy - turn off your brain or turn off the DVD player. Those are your choices; be prepared to pick one.

I went with option A and as it turns out, without worrying about air, heat, a fictitious compound called "unobtanium," placing explosive pods to within an inch of a specified location in the middle of a swirling mass of magma, finding a volcanic current from the Earth's core to the ocean floor with no turns a 50-foot vessel couldn't make, and the general public's childlike acceptance of ten of the most catastrophic natural disasters in the planet's recorded history happening simultaneously as coincidence, The Core isn't really all that bad a flick. I want to hate this more than I do, but for some reason I just don't. Huh.
