Review: The DVD picture is one of the best I've seen, especially since first seeing this film on a pan and scan video rental. Sound is great. Goldsmiths mood setting score comes in beautifuly, and the sound effects are stirring. BUT. DVD's have been around too long now for any big studio to release a DVD that's not enhanced for widescreen TV's. It is unforgivable.It doesn't take much. If New Line Cinema can release most of it's movies with a choice of widescreen/pan and scan/or enhanced widescreen, they all should be able to.

Summary: Hey, The Hungry Bear Just Wanted a Snack
Review: Seriously, I felt sorry for the bear anytime anything bad happened to it, or it got poked with a stick and hurt. Yes, I know I sound like a moron. He was so cute, though. I know if I were ever confronted with a real bear when I was not at the zoo or Northwest Trek I would either soil myself, run like hell, or pass out, but I rented this movie to see the bear. Seriously, I thought I would be rooting for the bear the whole movie, but I did start to really feel sorry for the characters (though it was funny when they were trying to climb along that log and the bear decided to start jumping up and down on it trying to make them fall off) because the script and director did such a good job of making them likeable. Well, Alec Baldwin played a jerk, but I felt so sorry for Anthony Hopkins' character who was trying to hold it together, and I REALLY felt sorry for the poor injured man who got cornered by the bear and shook around by it like he was a beanie baby being shook around by a hyperactive child. Better than I thought it would be though, and I thought it would be predictable but it wasn't. Might want to steer clear of it if you're already scared of bears in the first place, though.

Review: Lee Tamahori is a great director. Up to this film I had never heard of him before. Maybe he has directed other movies, but since I am not that much of a movie buff I really wouldn't know. There was one problem with the film, though. The fact it had scenes with bears in it. That alone is already enough to leave my heart pounding, because I am really scared to death of them. The soundtrack provided by Jerry Goldsmith(who's works include the masterful satanic pieces found in "The Omen") also helps to instill the fear in the viewer. It grabs your attention from the first moment and doesn't let go! Great film!

Review: THE EDGE quickly intrigued me. What was going on with Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin and Elle Macpherson? Unfortunately, that promising start went nowhere. Next thing I knew, THE EDGE leaves Elle behind as Anthony and Alec get chased through the forest by a kodiak bear, who, I might add, proves smarter than the average bear. (They should have brought a picnic basket.) Anyway, I kept waiting for THE EDGE to get back to the human drama with which it began so well, but it never did. It seemed to me that THE EDGE was supposed to be a different film until someone discarded the love/murder triangle story for wacky hybrid of JAWS and THE DEFIANT ONES.

Review: One of my all-time favorite films, I first believed I was watching a one-off "adventure" movie. This movie is actually about the adventure of "life" and our attitude toward adversity, and the choice of whether to take the high road when that choice is presented. Watch it twice, and listen closely to what is said..... ...Baldwin and Hopkins are superb.

Summary: A wilderness metaphore about facing life's adversities.
Review: "People lost in the wilderness tend to die from shame." This oft repeated theme in the movie links the story to our everyday lives. Confronted with adversity, men tend to blame themselves or others and wallow in regret and confusion, rather than muster available resources and think smart. Alec Balwyn and Anthony Hopkins, adversaries for the same woman, render splendid life/death performances. And the Kodiak beak? He deserves an Academy Award nomination, I believe. Hopkins final comment in the show is worth experiencing the entire movie. This is one of the finest film stories I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. My wife and I both loved it.

Review: Anthony Hopkins did an outstanding performance in surviving in the wild. Alex Baldwin lends a great sense of humor during times of great tension. Filled with many sad moments. This movie left me on the "edge".
