Summary: interesting, excellent and attractive
Review: Many people say this film is not so good as Mr. Higgins's original book. But I cannot agree with such an opinion. Well, there are many differences between the film and the book (including the last scene). But, these differences do not mean this film's inferiority but show another attraction. In this film, Mr. Higgins's marvelous talent is concentrated. During watching it, I could have extremely exciting and thrilling time, and felt a severity of human-life. Well, for even a great person (Colonel Kurt Steiner) and his men who did their best, it was impossible to overcome their tragic destiny.

Summary: EXCELLENT !!
Review: Michael Caine is superb as a German (not Nazi) officer in charge of a mission into England in a plot to kidnap Churchill. The action is fast and lively. Donald Sutherland, an Irishman whose disdain of England for its Irish subjugation brings him to be allied with Caine, supports Caine splendidly. Of course the plot fails, but what's nice about the movie is that the German soldiers are not portrayed as the brutal, totally evil people most movies depict. They are shown to be human, and actually quite nice. The movie shows that not all Germans were Nazis, and it should be applauded for not taking the typical Hollywood direction.

Summary: Classic War Movie
Review: One of the best Action-Suspense War movie I've ever seen. Although there is one scene missing in this DVD, the playing of the church's organ before battle, is a very good copy. Definetly a must for War movie fans.

Summary: An Airborne Adventure form World War II
Review: The Eagle Has Landed give one an insight into the social-historical aspects of the much mis-portrayed German Soldier. These Falshirmjäger (Paratroopers) of the Luftwaffe, show that loyalty to country does not always mean being in-line with the current political view. This movie is an action/adventure portrayal, based on the Jack Higgins novel, which illustrates a group of fighting men, caught in the midst of the mad-gone world of the Third Reich, fighting honorably nonetheless. Michael Caine is wonderful as the Commander of the group, as is Robert Duvall, who plays the mastermind behind the scheme to kidnap Winston Churchill. The young Donald Southerland is also a treat to watch as the sly "Mr. Devlin", I.R.A. member, working as an agent of the Third Reich. Wonderful movie, nothing outrageous in terms of unrealistic weaponry, just a 'good ole War movie'!

Summary: Action-Packed WWII Suspense from MAGNIFICENT SEVEN director
Review: The title doesn't refer to those infamous words from Apollo 11, but the WWII action thriller book written by Jack Higgins. Michael Caine heads an elite German paratrooper group, fallen out of favor, but given a chance at redemption & honor during a top secret mission to kidnap Winston Churchill, in order to negotiate a better surrender for Germany. Donald Sutherland is an Irishman working as a Nazi spy, who finds love when he least needs it. The plot takes off when the paratroopers take over an English town on Churchill's tour route. Robert Duvall & Donald Pleasence represent the Nazi hiarchy, while Treat Williams & Larry Hagman head up the American troops stationed near the English village. John Sturges ("Magnificent Seven," "The Great Escape") manages to drive over some plotholes with non-stop action & suspense, and even manages to keep the outcome in doubt. Caine is sympathetic, as a man of honor trying to give his men an opportunity to go out as soldiers, while Sutherland manages to keep his Irish rogue interesting, even when you hate him. The audience will find its own loyalties shifting from the Germans to the English and back. This a seriously under-rated thriller. The DVD is a great transfer, restored in its orginal widescreen, the best way to view this action-packed film.

Summary: Gripping War Film - One of the best.
Review: This film is unique among war films, because the viewer cansympthasise with both sides. But the main reason it stands out is that it has a cast of experience and depth, including Michael Caine at his peak, Donald Sutherland, Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasance. Larry Hagman's cameo was particularly enjoyable. Much of the film is centred around Studley Constable, a small village in the east of England, a beautiful setting to play out the drama. Add to it the breathtaking score by Lalo Schiffirin, and the film carries real character.... Overall, the film carries excitement, emotion and suspence, although admittedly, the ending is a bit weak. Sadly, it left room for a sequal which was never realised, but the film on its own is well worth watching. END

Summary: Top Marks
Review: This film is very good. The direction, the cast, everything about this film is very good. I can't say enough good things about this film. I would recommend it anyone. I never get bored through this film, I remember watching it for the first time when I was about 15, and even now, I don't get bored of it.

Summary: Do they make classics like this today?
Review: This is a fine movie. It is a well-told, true story of an attempt late in the war to assainate Churchill by an elite German paratroop command. I don't know the real story, but the movie will have you on the edge of your seat. Donald Sutherland fans will especially love his portrayal of the marsh warden/spy. Larry Hagman is a bit over the top as an Army National guard Colonel. Knowing the ending (Guess what? Churchill lives!) doesn't diminish the suspense. Why? Because this is one movie that does a great job of making you love the "bad guys"!

Summary: A great war movie
Review: This is a great war movie that is seldomly made anymore. It has a captivating plot, great acting by some major stars and good action scenes that make this a very watchable and interesting movie.

The plot begins with SS Leader Heinrich Himmler (portrayed excellently by Donald Plesence) agreeing to an idea that has a group of elite German Commando's to try to kidnap British Leader Winston Churchill.

The group of elite Fallschrimjager's (German Paratroopers/Commando's) is headed by Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine), a noble and gentlemanly officer. He is chosen due to his superior ability to get the mission done and also because he is in "bad favor" with his superiors by striking an SS Officer who was trying to shoot a Jewish girl who tried to escape the concentration camp trains.

The commando's parachute successfully into England, with the help of an Irish Republican Army spy (Donald Sutherland). The rest of the cast of the movie do a great job. I won't give away the rest of the movie, but it is excellent!

From Robert Duvall to Larry Hagman, there are some major stars in this movie, and I am suprized that it is not more well known. The book is great (Jack Higgins is the author), and the movie follows the book pretty good throughout.

Overall a highly recommended movie!
