Summary: A real fan's point of view
Review: This movie reeked for the same reason most other superhero flicks did;they killed the villan.Why the studios don't think we will come back if they don't have the Hollywood ending.Most comic heroes didn't kill their adversaries.The Green Goblin killed himself after many years of battling Spidey.Why not stay true to the comic?Superman did;Lex Luthor made it through three movies.Why introduce a character that is a formidable enemy,just to kill him off in under two hours?
If you select the pop-up fact feature on the dvd,it details everything the director butchered from the original comic.On it's own i did find it entertaining and fun to watch.It still would have been better had the Goblin cleverly escaped Spidey and exclaimed "We'll meet again Spiderman!"

Summary: Movie Version of Famous Comic Series
Review: First, I must admit, I have never been a fan of, or read
Spider-Man comics, so I can't compare the comics with the film. In my opinion, this movie was so hyped up in such a way that it could not possibly live up to expectations, including my expecations. The storyline reminds a B movie.The storyline concerns high schooler Peter Parker, who is definitely not on the "A-list" at his school. He is unpopular, and feels out of place as he tries to impress the girl of his dreams. Then, one fateful day, his life is changed forever when, during a field trip through a spider-breeding lab, a genetically altered spider bites him. He then finds that his physical body has been enhanced, and eventually, he becomes half spider. He harnesses the ability to climb walls and skyscrapers, and leap far distances. He also finds he is able to shoot extremely strong web strings. Then, an archenemy arises, the Green Goblin, who is determined to kill Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man. Meanwhile, the media going wild with news stories of strange appearances Spider-Man and the Goblin. Throughout the movie Spider-Man uses his powers to rescue his girlfriend from various dangers. The climax features a big showdown between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin, a hand-to-hand combat sequence. The film ends with a somewhat bittersweet ending. The ending makes it obvious that the doors are wide open for a Spider-Man 2. Although Spider-Man wasn't a movie that met expectations exactly, it's still worth seeing. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing it again. If you enjoyed B-type movies like Lost in Space, Independance Day, Godzilla etc, you will enjoy Spider-Man.

Summary: Groovy Webbin'
Review: I totally love this movie! I am quite particular about what I let my children (8,6,5) watch, but I cannot see any reason to keep them from watching this. There is some violence, but it's all bad guy against good guy type and no blood and guts, no cussing. The hero, the damsel in distress, the bad guy, all make this a true comic brought to life. Enjoy!

Review: The end result of a campaign that lasted almost 20 years, the movie was well worth the wait. I noticed Willem Dafoe was doing an imitation of Jack Nicolson's "Joker" from Batman, but what can you say. If you're going to steal, steal from the best!

Summary: PERFECT casting!
Review: When Spider-Man was released in the theaters, I heard many people say that they didn't know why Tobey Magurie was cast as the Web Spinner. What they don't realize is that Stan Lee originally conceived of Spider-Man as an average sort of person with everyone could relate. As Rosemary Harris as Aunt May says in the film, "You're not Superman." Maguire is perfectly cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He is of average height, underplays instead of overacts and is just as convincing at playing a high school nerd as he is at playing a super hero. Kirsten Dunst, likewise, is terrific as Mary Jane Watson. With her looks (and body), it would be easy for her to simply physically match the character. However she also manages to embody the character's vulnerability that she hides beneath her confident and charismatic exterior. Having seen very few of her adult roles, I never would have pegged Dunst for the role. However, having seen her in the role, I can't see anyone else playing it. There was much talk about the special effects in Spider-Man as there always seems to be with blockbusters like this. However, to me, the casting is the true strength of the film. Maguire, Dunst, Harris as Aunt May, Cliff Robertson as Uncle Ben and Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborne are all perfectly cast and show that a film can have all the latest technical wizardry, but still must depend on its actors to flesh out the characters and make the audience believe and care about what happens to them.

Summary: Good movie but not a blockbuster
Review: Very entertaining flick, even for those that aren't into comic books or super hero's. I thought the special effects and the costumes were all well done. The acting was good and the story basically made sense (although there were a couple of coincidences that were a bit hard to take). This movie is definitely worth watching. On the negative side I felt that it lacked the super "Blockbuster" appeal that certain movies have that make them watchable over and over again. I am not sure that I can pin point why that is but I can make a few guesses: The villain was too "convenient" (who he is and the timing are too coincidental) and he didn't have any evil cohorts. The acting by Dafoe was excellent but the situations he was in and the surrounding story line just weren't as strong. The transition from normal Peter Parker into Spider-man was a bit forced and making all the time frames work was obviously a problem. This is also why the timing between the good and bad characters and how they meet was awkward. Perhaps the film should have started with Spider-man being around for a long time already and simply just fighting evil. Then Spider-man II could have been made showing the touching and romantic part of his growing up, the high school sweetheart part of the story, etc. In X-men we just got Wolverine in action, right off the bat, and it plays better. I don't remember a lot of background story in the first Superman movie either. In other words, we already knew he gets bit by a spider... The romantic part of the story was on the soft side. Does every super hero by night have to be a sucker by day? I guess it's part and parcel of the genre but I felt it was flat on screen. Anyway, the acting was good and I am not being critical of the performances. I recommend this movie, it is fun to watch, but it isn't on my "got to own it" list.

Review: What a great film....look, with almost 700 reviews written, there's hardly much I can add, it was just very nicely done and a great family movie I think. I never read Spiderman as a kid but it doesn't matter, I highly enjoyed the movie, well worth a buy!!! I've heard many true spiderman folks not find this film a good adaptation at all. Well, considering the movie made $400 million at the box office and 2 more sequels are in the works, surely somebody thought it was well done! Kirsten Dunst is truly cute in this movie and Tobey McGuire and her seem to have this little shy connection between them...do they get together in the end? I can't tell you of course and the nice surprise at the end makes this for a fun film to watch.

Summary: The wall crawler is back
Review: I did not have the chance to go see this at the movie since I was moving from Fla to Tx at the time that it was released.. Which does make me sad.. I would loved to have seen this audio/visual extraveganza on the silver screen! First.. I heard that lots of people ditzed the movie for being corny.. And my answer to them is.. Get a grip.. obviously they have never read or seen the original comics.. The humour and dialogue where so Stan (the creator of Spidey).. They could not have gotten a better spider man.. Seems that Jerry must have done some research on the character.. or was himself a fan of the wall crawler.. And speaking of the comics.. I am soo glad they chose the Green Goblin as the first villian.. it was outstanding the way they played out the interaction between these two long time enemies.. In the long run.. if you have not seen this movie and you are a fan of spiderman the comics then you must do it.. rite now! You will love it as much as I did.. All hail Peter Parker!

Summary: Good, but a little thin
Review: An above average movie version of a comic book superhero. It is fun, exciting, and pretty true to the source material. However, it is a bit lacking in emotional drama. Toby Maguire does do a good job with Peter Parker, and Aunt May and Uncle Ben are both well-rounded characters. There is both good conflict and good comic relief in the form of Flash Johnson and J. Jonah Janeson. But Mary Jane is lacking in much depth, and The Green Goblin is almost a caricature of a comic book villian. This seems a good start, but there will need to be more character development to make me really feel for these characters. While I am an avid comic book fan, and I enjoy the occasional Spider-Man story, Spider-Man has never really hooked me. This movie felt the same way: an enjoyable story and some good characters, but that's about it. I will look forward to the next movie, but not as much as I will look forward to others.
