Summary: THE gangster movie.
Review: This is *The* gangster movie, period. Forget Godfather, forget Casino, forget even Goodfellas... if you can see one movie on gangsters & the mob, make sure it's "Scarface". And make sure it's this DVD edition. Everything about the movie is perfect - from DePalma's superb imagery, to Pacino's gritting portrayal of Tony, to Giorgio Moroder's powerful soundtrack (widely available here in Europe, but, I'm told, scarce in USA)... Simply unmissable.

As for people annoyed with critic Maltin's bashing of the movie... well, I say, do as I do and forget that anything by the name of "maltin" even exists. I rarely read his reviews (thankfully, he's nowhere on TV in Europe, so I don't have to watch him) and if I do, I always make sure to watch those movies that he gives one star and avoid those that he considers "best" and if I need a critic's advice, I stick to Roger Ebert and the Blockbuster team.

Summary: One of the best Pacino movies
Review: Together with Michael Corleone, this role is probably Pacino's best. The movie is greatly directed and acted. Michel Pfeiffer playes her role very well, and of course Al Pacino is convincing as ever. I spent the whole weekend watching Pacino movies, first Godfather, then Scarface, Heat and Devil's Advocate...the man is a genius in his field. Great movie for a Pacino fan, and a great movie period!

Summary: My first DVD
Review: Scarface was the first DVD I ever purchased. As always, the movie is a masterpiece and the disc is well worth buying. The documentary and deleted scenes are like manna from heaven for Scarface fans. The documentary is insightful and informative and features terrific interviews with Al Pacino,Brian DePalma and Oliver Stone. The highlight of the documentary is,undoubtably, the hilarious overdubbed clips from the TV version of the movie. Most movie deleted scenes on DVDs are usually a big waste of time. Not Scarface though, the outtakes are awesome. The photos on the Still File were great but, unfortunately, they took forever to load.A lot of people complain about the picture quality of the DVD but I had no probelm with it.It was fun reading the subtitles to see what the characters were saying in the movie, too.Overall though,it's a great movie on a well stocked disc and it is a must buy for Scarface fans. As Tony Montana never said "In this country, you gotta get the DVDs first. Then when you got the DVDs,you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women."

Summary: Over-rated mess!!
Review: If you want to see the definitive version of Scarface, watch the 1932 film with Paul Muni in the lead role and directed by Howard Hawks. It is vastly superior in every way(and I know Brian DePalma would agree!) Pacino is the best thing in this movie. The original is a much better production and has a faster pace than this one(in 1932!)

Summary: Words cant say enough
Review: Call me crazy, but watching this movie is part of my weekly agenda no matter what happens. Pacino plays Tony Montana, a cuban who comes to America as part of the crime wave. He wants to make it big asap. Some of the scenes such as the one with the chain saw are gruesome but definitely worth watching. I can never get bored of it. This is definitely one to own.

Summary: Truly a modern classic
Review: I have read many of the reviews here, and have a few words to offer potential purchasers.

Firstly, may I say that I am not a fan of Brian De Palma's work; his directorial "style" is almost entirely derivative (if not simply theft of the unique techniques of some of the greatest directors in cinematic history). While this is not a bad thing in and of itself -- they're great directors for a reason -- in De Palma's case it typically results in mediocre, clumsy films (and sometimes even worse). Scarface is *NOT* one of those mediocre films. It is arguably a cinematic masterpiece, whether by De Palma's design or by accident -- more likely the latter. Despite the controversy surrounding its release, it received favorable initial reviews from nearly every credible critic. Even those critics who offered negative reviews at the time of Scarface's release have since rescinded, with the exception of Leonard Maltin -- a man who once gave Waterworld three stars, I believe.

Some have written here, claiming Scarface is nothing but an ultra-violent, obscene, morally repugnant tale of a coke-dealing Cuban emigre. I would suggest that nothing is further from the truth. Scarface is, above all else, a superbly written screenplay, and an incredibly well-acted film. Al Pacino still recounts to this day that Tony Montana is by far the favorite of the roles he has taken over the years. Just about every actor (and actress!) in Hollywood has their own Tony Montana impersonation -- none as good as Pacino's, however. Scarface is the film that launched Michelle Pfeiffer's career; it is also the film that launched Oliver Stone's. Note that the film launched Oliver Stone's career because it is so much MORE than merely a violent gangster tale; it conveys a very subtle, yet effective anti-capitalist message well in-line with Stone's political preferences. While I will not give away the film's plot to those who have not seen Scarface, I would ask those that have to consider this: what brings about Tony's downfall, and why? The answer of course, is that despite all of Tony's capitalist ambitions, he is too moral (and not enough of a capitalist pig) to kill innocent women and children to further himself.

I didn't see Scarface until 1995 or so because I assumed that no film from the early 1980s that I hadn't already seen (particularly one by a notoriously hack director) could capture my interest. After being dragged to watch it with much protest on my part, it captured my imagination and entertained me immensely. It is undoubtedly my favorite movie, in that I can watch it again and again, and enjoy it every time. I will not say that it is the greatest movie of all time; The Godfather, Schindler's List, and quite a number of other films are superior, in more respects than one. Scarface will undoubtedly, however, be regarded as a modern classic 20 years from now, much in the same way we now regard films like A Clockwork Orange and Apocalypse Now. It is already embedded in popular culture (although you likely miss the references if you have not seen the film) -- do not miss out any longer if you have not already seen the film.

Summary: Great! Just Great!
Review: I first saw this movie on channel FX. I got intersted in the movie because there was Al Pacino on the film. This movie is really astonishing..it was for me. I never seen such a great film like this one. The beginning is great, and the rest of the movie is ok. What I really love about this movie is the attitude that Al plays here..kinda funny the way he talks here..and that's cool. Get this movie man you'll like it. I did.
