Review: Watching Norman Jewison's Thomas Crown Affair makes anyone wonder why a remake would be necessary. Thirty years later this film still holds up well compared to many of the newer crime dramas. Steve McQueen's versatility as an actor radiates in this film, it's still amazing that he wasn't even considered for the role. After pleading for a chance to Norman Jewison he won the part and silenced many of his critics. With a great supporting cast, especially Faye Dunaway as the cunning Miss Vicki one wonders why anyone would want to be part of a remake. This is a very tough act to follow. Before you see the remake watch the original then compare. Nothing against Pierce Brosnan but stick to 007, you're no Steve McQueen.

Summary: "Cat and Mouse" At Its Finest
Review: Why they ever remade this film is a mystery to me. Steve McQueen is at his best, confidently strolling around as a brilliant man who is far too wealthy for his own good. I found the music to be an interesting aspect of the film-particularly when combined with the split screen effects that director Norman Jewison uses to great effect. Watching the heists unfold in this movie is incredibly suspenseful and the split screens really help display the plotlines without needless cutting. Faye Dunaway is far more compelling than Rene Russo, creating a feminine character that is incredibly complex and much harder to read than the remake. In fact, all of the character development in this film is richer and there is definitely less emphasis on the action. If you approach this movie expecting an action thriller, you will be disappointed. Instead, it is a psychological film that explores the genius of McQueen's and Dunaway's "cat and mouse" game of sexual attraction.What I particularly love is the ending of this film. Rather than dissolve into a Hollywood "happy" ending, the movie ends on much less defined ground. I enjoyed the intrigue and intelligence of this film. Trust me. Don't see the remake. Check out another fine Steve McQueen film.
