Summary: Great 60's caper!
Review: Fun, Colorful, glamorous, cool ... a little dated yes.... but if those fashion/action/montages so popular in 60's and 70's films are out ... why did they invent MTV! This move is cool, period. Characters are chilly and calculating, but fun. Who wouldn't like to be that cunning. McQueen is the epitome of minimal, Dunaway (as always) is both gorgeous and amazing. One of the last real screen divas ... she can go from the most subtle of subtle to soooo over the top! A must have for film buffs.

Summary: What Remake???
Review: Great film whose focus is on the psychology of the relationship that develops between Steve MCQueen (Thomas Crown) and Faye Dunaway (Vickie Douglas). This is really not an action film; the plot line consists of the perfect bank robbery (planned by the socially acceptable, wealthy, well educated and divorced Crown...similar to a so called 'Boston Brahmin')with Douglas called in to solve the crime and recover the money using her own style, after the Boston Police, Paul Burke, have failed.
The dialoge is witty, sophisticated, and nuanced (unlike the remake). It is high style.
An interesting facet is the portrayl of Douglas...remember this is the 1960's before quotas and sexual harassment...who as a woman competes using her own talents, and Crown's almost self destruction because of his attraction to her...his equal. The ending is realistic. Douglas makes a decision that is conflicting and in the end Crown despite his love protects himself.
The sixties fashions...get a load of the mini skirts...are fun, the score , especially 'windmills of the mind' lends to the theme of 'what makes tommy crown tick?", and the shots of older Boston and Beacon Hill add elegance and/or interest. The subltety, the sophistication of these two paired amoral adversaries, the wit, the psychology make this a great film.

Summary: Great Sixties Movie
Review: Having seen the movie many times as a teenager in England in the sixties and having reviewed the video in the nineties,i do feel the movie does not make an easy trasition throgh the years.Modern viewers via the smaller screen may find the spli screening offputting although this worked well with a number of films in the sixties,it along with the fashions of the day now seem dated.However the story line and the excellent plot to rob the bank are excellent and timeless and Mcqueen's acting is marvellous as is Dunaway's.Also the ending is very original and the whole movie is so superior to the new Bosnian version.

Summary: Steve McQueen at his best!
Review: Having seen this movie in a theatre when it first came out, I had my doubts about a re-make. However, with an open mind I viewed the new edition. This convinced me that the original was impossible to duplicate with Pierce Brosnan and Sharon Stone. Realizing I had to have the original for my library. Thank you for making it available. The chemistry between McQueen & Dunaway cannot be matched by any other actors in this fascinating story line.

Summary: Lack of chemistry, inconsistent story and detail mar movie
Review: I am dumbfounded that so many people think the original is better than the Brosnan/Russo "Affair." There is little chemistry between McQueen and Dunaway. The chess scene is something only a guy would think is erotic; Dunaway acts like a baby-doll and McQueen does nothing but glare. Dunaway is too young to take seriously as an equal adversary. McQueen seems to be just walking through the film. The inconsistencies in his character are annoying. He is a loner and a "street fighter." If he is so bored with his life, why isn't he actually involved with the caper? All he does is organize it just like one of his business takeovers. How is that so thrilling? Why would such a loner play polo? Certainly it is a dangerous game, but it is a team sport--supposedly not appropriate for Crown. When he proves he can do the caper again, why does he do it exactly the same way? Isn't that boring? Shouldn't he figure out some new way to steal the money? The sound track sounds more like tv-show music. It is supposed to be modern jazz, but mostly it is just grating. There is little change in atmosphere provided by the music. The ending is one of the few appropriate parts given the setup of the story. The Brosnan/Russo "Affair" is more sophisticated. It is refreshing to see a man and a woman the same age falling in love. Russo's character has the intelligence that comes with maturity to be an equal adversary to Brosnan's smart and clever Crown. Moreover, Brosnan's Crown is hands-on in both capers. It is the rush from doing the theft himself that is his motivation. He doesn't want to direct others to do it. Regarding the nudity--women have breasts. Get over it. Russo's character lives in Europe where society is less hung-up on women's breasts; women go to the beach topless there. If we can see men with their shirts off, why not women with their shirts off? This movie is a piece of cinema history showing different techniques tried in the late sixties. But the movie does not transcend time like caper movies of the 40's. The 1999 Thomas Crown Affair will seem fresh 30 years from now.

Summary: McQueen unsuitable for this role
Review: I bought this DVD ... because I'm a long-time admirer of Steve McQueen and had never seen this particular film. And I was disappointed. It might be the worst Steve McQueen movie I've ever seen. To begin with, McQueen should not be playing a wealthy businessman. It doesn't suit him. Secondly, director Norman Jewison's use of split-screen tecniques is overdone by a factor of 10. At times there doesn't even seem to be a point to it. Thirdly, the soundtrack music is loud and intrusive, as if the director wants it to be another character. ("Also staring Michel Legrand as the soundtrack.") One reviewer remarked that the chess scene between McQueen and Dunaway is erotic. Soporific is more like it. If any part of that scene drew my attention it was the design of the chess pieces. As for the interplay between the actors... that's when I shut the movie off and went to bed. The premise of a man who had dangerous hobbies to keep him interested in life is a good one. I've done similar things myself. But it was poorly done in this movie. And Steve McQueen was wrong for that role.

Summary: Always Cool McQueen Delivers Again!
Review: I have been a fan of Steve McQueen since I saw The Great Escape, and this is one of the best caper films i ever saw. The split screen effect adds a new dimension to the film. And the romantic chess scene is now a classic(Mike Myers spoofed it in Austin Powers:The Spy Who Shagged Me). The combination of McQueen and Dunaway is perfect for this film. This is a must see for all McQueen fans. And the recent remake with Pirece Brosnan is as good as the original.

He worked for Shawmutt Bank in Boston, and they were shooting a scene there at the bank and needed an extra to play the part but were running low on budget so my grandfather did it for free. I love this version of the movie as well as the new one- but this is unforgettable to me!
