Summary: My Two Cents Worth on a Great Film
Review: A lot of folks have already provided plenty of comments on this film, but I wanted add my own little bit to what is probably the best film about US Army soldiers in WWII. The DVD is excellent and comes close to the theater experience, which by the way was the best way to see this film. Tom Hanks and the rest of the cast are great portraying members of the 2nd Ranger Battalion during the D-day landings and the subsequent mission to retrieve Private Ryan. They don't overact nor give hollow macho performances that is characteristic of other films on WWII. Many actors must have been envious to see this cast of relatively unknown actors provide stirring performances. As for Tom Hanks, he didn't get an Academy Award, but he must have received of lot acknowledgement from his peers that he stole the show that year for his portrayal of Captain Miller, the Ranger Company Commander. The film is graphic, but comes close to what soldiers experienced on June 6, 1944 when they assaulted Normandy. The D-Day landing sequence is frightening and makes people realize that war is terrible, and that the young men who fought there were heros. People who see this movie may realize why combat veterans become emotional whenever they reflect on their experiences and their fallen comrades. The sequence at the beginning of the movie with the veteran walking through the cemetary at Normandy is priceless. Some viewers may find that the film's opening D-Day sequence steals most of the movie's impact, resulting in the rest of the movie not providing a climatic ending; but the small unit of Rangers and Paratroopers defending against an attacking German Infantry Battalion under Captain Miller's command is good. Trivia: the German Tiger tanks seen in the film are the same tanks used in the 1970 film "Kelly's Heros" starring Clint Eastwood.

Summary: Great War Movie
Review: A relistic film that will make you truly fell hate toward the German Army, if you don't already. In the theater I felt my heart pound when the tanks were coming toward the bridge. The end of the movie brought a tear to my eye.

Summary: Good, but not great
Review: Okay, the first twenty minutes of this movie will have you glued in your chair in awe of the spectacle that is Saving Private Ryan, but lets face it, the rest is just empty filler. The cast goes somewhere, gets by a problem. Then they do it 10 more times. S.P.R. is better than most war movies our there but it's better a rental than anything. I mean, who has the time, or would just want to, see a 3 and a half hour movie a second time around.

Summary: Very enlightening, educating, sad, and real
Review: I had an idea of what war was and it was nothing like I had imagined. This movie is very moving, very realistic and very sad. War is not pretty and it this movie does an awesome job of helping people understand what soldiers have to go through. I loved this movie. There wasn't extensive dialouge, however the dialogue was powerful. The acting was incredible, by all. The picture and editing was also top notch. The movie gives you the sense of steping in someone's shoes who has fought war. Also it shows how families deal with war. Everyone should see this movie young and old. After watching it, it will either provoke memories for some or help those, without memories, understand in a deeper way.

Summary: SPR shows just how war is a necessary evil.
Review: Loved this film. From the get go it starts with a bang. The troops storming the beachhead. Wow! Then they shoot up all these German bad guys. Then the Americans want to save this guy who is vital to the war cause. So they have to go behind the bad guys lines to find this Ryan. Then they kill some more Germans and finally reach him when he happens to be blowing up a bad-guy German tank. It's smokin' like burnt toast! I'm not going to tell you the end as that would spoil everything. It shows how war is a nexessary evil. The whole movie is just so realistic. It's a real tribute. It's so great. I love this film!

Summary: 5 STARS ARE NOT ENOUGH
Review: Although the proceeding description is often used and rarely substantiated; Saving Private Ryan is a landmark film.

The visuals are among the most haunting ever filmed, including a now justly famous opening battle scene which has set a new standard for battle scenes in war movies. There has not been a more accurate depiction of a battle, than "Ryan's" take on Omaha Beach.

But the movie's brilliance does not stop at the technical wizardry. The performances are heartfelt and memorable, and the largely unknown cast (for now), is absolutely superb.

Leading the way is of course Tom Hanks in, not his best performance, but a great one nonetheless in its understatement and quiet dignity, very well worthy of his Oscar nomination. Also noteworthy are Tom Sizemore as a dependable, eternally loyal lieutenant, Jeremy Davies as a not-battle-ready translator, who is integral to the most haunting scene of the year.

This is an excellent movie the should not be missed. It is expertly directed, acted, and scripted(a fact which was underrated).

No matter what the Academy says; this is the Best Picture of 1999
