Review: I saw this movie only when the local video store had run out of copies of the more recent hits that I went in there to rent. Overall, I would say that the plot isn't all that bad, it's just that the theme is basically "The Road Warrior" set in the Pacific Northwest instead of the sandy desert.There is an incredibly boring and almost unwatchable love scene that eats up about 45 minutes that I'd rather spend watching Barney videos with a bunch of three-year-olds, because after about 5 minutes of that particular scene, we GET THE MESSAGE that Costner's character is falling in love. No need to drag it out further. All in all, without that scene, the movie would have moved a lot quicker and perhaps not garnered the horrible reviews it received.

Review: Kevin Costner found the David Brin book and turned into a 3 hour film, And it could had saved his box office career. Costner is a Drifter without a name, An Shelter seeking Con-man of a devastated America, He discovers a Mail Man's uniform and decides to re-store the wrecked country, and Combat General Bethelem and his Hell-born Holonists.

Summary: Plausible, exciting and interesting
Review: Despite what critics have said about this film, I think it's terrific. It shows in great detail a plausible world of the future, where society has completely crumbled in to a new Dark Ages. People are ruled by fear, and even the most rudimentary comforts are treated as luxuries. One of the most heartbreaking things about this story is that many characters have a memory of what the US was like before the catastrophe occurred. You can see fragments of the world that was sticking out of the dirt and grime. It's a fantastic story about justice and compassion winning out over might. The cast is great, the philisophy endearing and the photography is quite lovely. Forget what you've read about the movie, and allot three hours to just enjoy how vivid the world it creates is.

Summary: A tale of hope, love, and never forgetting who you are
Review: Let's face it. Kevin Costner is of a rare breed of actors. There's no middle ground with him; either you love him, or you hate him. And sadly, those who hate him appear to have the louder voice. Oh sure, Dances With Wolves was great. And yes, Waterworld was a little sketchy. But how is Costner to escape from the shadows of these two movies? What is it going to take before people start respecting his amazing talents again? If not The Postman, than what? We need these Costner haters to just admit that they will never give him another ounce of respect no matter what, so that the rest of us can just watch and enjoy his movies in untainted peace. Well let me tell you about The Postman, I was blown away. My biggest frustration now is convincing people that it's worth every minute. I don't understand people's claims that it is "boring", "pretentious", and "way too long". It is none of these. It is the story of a solitary man, wanting nothing more than to wander around as he would, in peace. The story about how a man can change, from a self-serving and ignorant stranger to someone who can bring hope to the desperate communities spread thinly throughout the northwest. The story of how a simple turn of fate can give an at first unwilling man the tools he needs to lead those helpless people into a new life of happiness and dreams-come-true. Costner as the Postman never tried to be anything he wasn't. His range of emotion, as always, was amazing and right on target. And by directing and producing this movie, he proves again that he is willing to take a risk on a genuinely important movie. Will Patton, as General Bethlehem, so desperate to rid the world of the Postman, is chillingly evil, showing no compassion for the many lives he takes throughout, and awe-inspiring in his presence. This is one of those movies that is too important to be comical, too complex to be short, and too honest to be pretentious. I can't think of another movie that moved me in quite the same way. What this movie does so well is it sets up a magnificent ending with a magnificent beginning. People complain that it takes a while for Costner to actually become "The Postman". However, what happens before that is equally, if not more, important in the bigger picture. The character development is crucial, as every major character changes throughout, save for the always menacing General Bethlehem who provides the constant threat that Costner and the others must grow together against. The mailbag was the tool. Costner, The Postman, was the vessel. And despite falling in love with a married woman, constant attacks and threats from the murderous general, and a pack of kids blindly following him on his "quest", he shows the people, so in need of support and inspiration, that "stuff is getting better every day".

Summary: Trust your instincts, not the critics, think for yourself !
Review: This is definitely a "thinking person's" film. It shows a maturity of effort for Costner. His trademark features are there, the filming, the epic nature of the work; but these are elements that Costner works so well in. Every artist has their preferred medium, whether sculpting in clay, portraits in charcoal, or epics on the big screen. This is a valid piece of theatrical inspiration. The critics have trouble evaluating a work like this because it has so many diverse elements that you can't truly pin it down and exclusively label it in one precise genre. You really cannot pidgeonhole creativity. It is thought-provoking, compelling and interesting as one man's concept of a possible future after the U.S.A. has been devastated by nuclear war. The cinematography is inspired. I agree that Titanic was tough for any film to compete with. I missed the opening of this one entirely; and I know I missed alot watching it on video and not widescreen (Try to watch any Costner epic in widescreen if you can!). Even if you are not a Costner fan; this work stands on its own. I truly believe everyone will find something to like about this film. It isn't Costner's "best" work; but it isn't his worst either.

Summary: To those who haven't seen it.
Review: If you haven't seen this movie, go rent it, watch it, and form your own opinion. If you don't like it, so what it was just $3 bucks and one evening of your life. If you do like it, go rent it again, or buy it and add it to your collection. The one thing that makes this a good movie, is that you can get lost in that world, and you can relate to it. People have differant opinions, and taste. Thats one of the things that makes our country pretty great. Don't judge what you will like and dis-like on the taste and opinions of other people, and least of all "critics". Why do people expect all movies to be blockbusters. Some movies are just for those who can connect with them. Some are not written to be blockbusters. If you liked "Dances with Wolves" and "Waterworld, you'll like this one too. It's classic Costner.
