Summary: A great, crazy, fast paced film
Review: I have a weakness for weird flicks, and so this is pretty bias but what can I say, I loved this movie! So strange, and crazy you really have to think about it before it hits you that this is a great film.

A word on acting, Brucey baby is good as the hero, cabbie Korban Dallas, and Milla is well cast as the Fifth Element herself (Lord knows how she managed to memorize all the "divine Language!"), and I always enjoy a good Chris Tucker appearance, but the gold of the film lies in Gary Oldman as Zorg. Jean'-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg that is. The chronic bad hair day, violence loving, all life comes from destruction, type greedy guy. His accent is so unusual, and the lines he has are the best in the film ("Are you making fun of me?") I loved his performance! I can't rave enough about him, everything fell so into place, the limp, the baldness on his right side, the Southern accent, an unusual love for fire ("The flamethrower, my favorite") and the acceptance of who he is ("You're a monster Zorg!" "I know")

Music! Wow, I haven't been so impressed by a score since Jurassic Park, everything fit the scene perfectly.

As for visuals, though the creatures may not be very convincing, the scenery certainly is. What better way to express my feeling then to say, there hasn't been a movie since that matched the settings in this film, and if there has been I'd like to know!

Storyline was filled with holes, but you could care less. Just sit back, watch Willis play hero, Milla undress, Tucker freak out, and Oldman choke on a cherry (One of the BEST scenes!) Enjoy! This movie is worth every second of your time!

Summary: Glossy sci-fi
Review: Luc Besson is the man that gave us 'Leon', the stylised yet outstanding thriller, so his first real Hollywood picture is definitely a point of interest if nothing else. It basically tells a story set against a futuristic background where ultimate evil is about to encompass Earth. This is to be conquered by the so called 'Fifth Element' which takes the shape of the thin, red-haired Leeloo. When she is rescused by an inner-city cab driver we just know that there's got to be a romantic subplot amidst the impressive battle and chase sequences. The unusual couple soon cross paths with Cornelius (Ian Holm), who alone knows the importance of the fifth element. Zorg (Gary Oldman) is the man that stands in their way.

Whilst this is basically just a pulp plot punctuated by explosions and screaming, it never pretends to be anything else. There's also plenty of incidental pleasures, such as the extravagant costume designs and an enjoyably light performance from Bruce Willis. Still, there are several incidental annoyances as well, especially the various outlandish characters that seem to be weird for the sake of it. When it's giving us character farce with the likeable Willis and cutely effective Jovovich, it's very enjoyable. Ditto in its impressive action seuquences.

This movie never pretends to be anything its not and therein lies its appeal as true blockbuster entertainment.

Summary: Earth is menaced by a bad special effect
Review: Luc Besson is a French film director who has made a large number of films some of them quite good. This however is not one of his great efforts. The plot was apparently something he worked out when he was 17. Looking at the film one thinks, this plot does rather look like it was written by a 17 year old.

The Earth is menaced by a large special effect. It is a bit like the one in Star Trek the voyage home except it is spherical rather than tubular. It is large black and moving towards the earth. If it arrives bad things will happen. (The tele tubbies will be broadcast 24 hours a day and the like)

The solution is simple. Some aliens have dropped a woman to earth. Unfortunately most of her has been destroyed except a hand. It is a simple matter to create her affresh by cloning the rest of her from her hand. She is an attractive woman who spends a high proportion of the film wandering around scantily dressed. (Yes this shows that the film was written by a 17 year old) Once the woman has been cloned it is a simple matter to have her lie down in an ancient temple and to have four posts with small amounts of the four elements placed on them. (Yes in the 23rd Century they have realised that the periodic table is wrong and that the elements are fire, earth, air and water. Once this is done the bad special effect recognises that it is beaten and leaves this universe to do evil in others.

Of course the film takes a while to get to this point. In reality it is the sum of the details of the film which are attractive rather than its unusual plot.

The vision of the future is one of epic confusion. Bruce Willis plays a taxi driver, one however who has worked in the military or the police force and is thus a logical person to play an action hero.

Gary Oldman is again a great villian and he gets most of the good lines. Aliens of various types drift in and out of the film and there is action a plenty. In the end the film is such that you forget the ridiculous plot and just enjoy Milla Jovovich wandering around saying things such as "have I forgoten to dress again" and Bruce Willis taking out the requisite quota of the forces of evil.

Summary: Chris Tucker ruined this movie
Review: Movie started out great. I've never seen futuristic city scapes as cool on any film. But then the idiot that Chris Tucker plays shows up and makes Jar Jar Binks look like Han Solo. As soon as he came on the scene, I turned to the guy who owned the DVD and said, "Please tell me he gets killed off early." But no such luck. He had no redeeming quality, not funny, not important to the storyline. I want a DVD with all the awful Chris Tucker dialogue, and as much as his scenes possible edited out. I think it's possible and a wonderful proposition. In fact, I'm tempted to see if I can have a techno friend make one for me.

Summary: The Fifth Element...Element of Annoyance.
Review: THE FIFTH ELEMENT has great visuals and special effects. The story of a futuristic cab driver who gets involved with a girl who may be the key to saving the world and gets involved with gangsters etc...is very intriguing. However, when Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod comes on screen, it ruins the whole movie. The high whining motor mouth voice is annoying. Some may say that Chris Tucker's character as humorous, but it isn't really. It's a distraction to the whole film. One can't pay attention to what's happening in the movie because they're waiting for this guy to get "oft" and then proceed with the rest of the film. Unfortunately, that never happens and the film is ruined because of that one character. Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman are great as always, and Milla Jovovich is very [attractive] Note: Watch Quentin Tarantino's JACKIE BROWN. Chris Tucker's character gets killed by Samuel L. Jackson's Character a la James Cagney style. It definitely makes up for not getting killed in THE FIFTH ELEMENT.

Summary: Not bad, not great, some good visual treats.
Review: In this Besson classic, Bruce Willis plays an ex-marine turned cab driver. Then one day, a superhuman being engineered on another planet get dropped into his car, and he finds himself trying to save the Universe from a giant evil entity bent on destroying all life (the thing looks like some sort of daemon-god from Lovecraft's writings). To make matters worse, this evil bad guy (Oldman) with bad hair and big guns wants to stop him.

The Fifth Element has some really good special affects, and it's definatly worth watching on a big screen television: especially in widescreen DVD. The soundtrack is awesome. Unfortunatly, the film has a few too many corny moments, and as usual, Milla Jovovich overacts at times. Trust me: none of the actors deserve anything for their preformances in this flick. If you want a film with good visual affects and lots of action, this is just the ticket. Star Wars fans may find themselves liking this movie quite a bit. If are looking for decent acting, however, then just watch Willis and Oldman and ignore everbody else.

Summary: Sit back and enjoy the ride
Review: Let's face it. This is a silly movie. But if you don't take it too seriously, then you'll enjoy it. Bruce Willis plays the standard Bruce Willis role. (Think of John McClain in space). Milla is good for what she does, Chris Rock is so stupid he's hysterical, and the rest of the supporting cast fill their roles perfectly. This movie isn't to be taken seriously, this movie is meant to be watched when there's nothing else on, and you've got a few hours to blow. It's right up there with "The Last Starfighter" and "Tron." Have fun.

Summary: Raggedy Ann meets Metropolis, Star Wars, the Jetsons etc..
Review: First, the sci-fi Cityscape here was fabulous with our hero Willis taxiing (flying) around this futurist town in 2300. I wish there were more scenes with this wondrous background. And the beginning starts out well enough, with the 1914 Egyptian archaeologists. Suddenly the red headed Raggedy Ann pops up thru a very strange experiment in 2300, and she may be the goddess of the universe, even if she's been sleeping for 5000 years. After the first 30 minutes though, this movie becomes really nothing more than incredibly ugly gun-toting monsters raising hell, and everyone else thinking the whole thing's a huge joke, starting with the Willis character, effectively playing the same action cast wise guy. There are more great gimmicks way better than the Jetsons which makes this watchable for a while. But soon enough, the sick jokes, smart aleck attitudes of just about the whole cast, not to mention an ugly Hitler-looking "art dealer" out to control the universe by collecting the long sought after magical rocks, made me take a few breaks. Then there's the MTV characters along with the awful soundtrack, the semi- bikini clad stewardesses, one who gets joyraped (that may not be a word, but that's what happens) by the leading "Song and Dance" MTV type. This is another supposedly amusing moment here. Still the sets are knockouts, and so are the colors. But this does not save what could have been a truly great sci-fi flick. The opera scene is another grabber with a blue octopus woman singing some real opera (very bizarre), though even she has to boogie at the end of the act. Another ridiculous shoot out with old Bruce laughing it up again...and at this point I'd had enough and turned it off for good. Not so bad since I made it through about 3/4...Maybe I missed something in this convoluted plot, and did not feel my mind expanding as the producers wanted ...Incredible sets, wizard space shots, and humor that starts out OKay, but won't quit, until I'm sure anyone will make an effort to keep watching. Too bad, but this is to be expected in 1990's moviemaking. I'm hoping this might change, but seriously doubt it.

Summary: Cutting Edge Sci-Fi
Review: What can I say about the Fifth Element? How about this, not only did I see it on Opening Day, but again the next day to make sure it was a good as I thought!! (it was)

This movie is unbelievable on any home theater system, the colors are rich and bright, and the audio is by far the best you will hear, wonderful soundtrack!

As for the movie itself, I loved it, a brilliantly original storyline about the "perfect being" and unimaginable evil, all tied together by the tongue in cheek Bruce Willis at his best. Combined with great performances by Milla Jovovich, Ian Holm, Chris Tucker, and the inimitable Gary Oldman, and you have yourself a great, great film!
