Summary: edited version is a letdown to original
Review: i'm fortunate to have seen the original, unedited version of this film and it's fantastic. THIS dvd however is definitely a letdown and not the same movie. warner bros. should never have touched the original. am not recommending this hacked piece of entertainment.

Summary: Very good DVD movie, despite the editing...
Review: Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (BB:ROTJ) has proven to be a great work in the animation world.

Not only has this spin-off proven to be a worthy successor to the venerable original series, despite strong resistance from purists, and not only did it keep all the Batman mythos and atmosphere, despite being set in a more futuristic Gotham City, but it has showed great craftsmanship in story telling. The story is much deeper, with hidden surprises from beginning to the end. From tragedy to suspense to drama, this one delivers. Note however that the movie, even in its edited form, might still be a little too intense for the very young...

The animation in the movie is above average, using much more involved screenshots and camera angle. Although the movements are not "Disney-quality" smooth, it is much better than what is showed on television.

The soundtrack is excellent. Where the television series only used techno-rock as background music (which was still very good), in this movie, they used a very successful blend of orchestral and techno-rock music. The result is a much richer, grander atmosphere surrounding the story. You'll also notice that the orchestral music takes centre-stage during a "flashback" sequence, showing the original Batman, Robin and Batgirl.

I have seen some clips of the original un-edited version, and I must agree with at least two re-edited clips that were redone for the final version. These new scenes actually were more dramatic than the original, dealing with the "death" of two characters. The original version of these scenes might be considered as "too-ordinary violence". Now, I won't elaborate so not to spoil too much the story, but I believe that the hoopla around the re-edition of this movie was greatly exaggerated.

But yes, there were some scenes I wished they kept, since that would explain some oddities that sneaked into the edited version. My example is a fight scene between the Joker and Batman. In the edited version, Batman is stunned and weakened by ONE punch from the Joker, despite having pinned the Joker to the wall. Just one lousy punch. Well, the original version actually showed the Joker holding... a hidden knife. Well that explains everything. And yes I do believe that the original version is much more intense, psychologically, than the final edited version.

But to say that the final product is but a shadow of the original work is largely exaggerated. This is good animation matched with a good story.

The DVD version comes with a good documentary, a trivia game, a music video, one pre-production, very intense deleted scene, and interesting movie-long commentaries from the creators of the movie. It also comes with trailers from different other movies.

As a DVD movie, it is a good bundle

UPDATE: The UNCUT version is available at the end of April, 2002! I guess somebody pushed VERY hard to get it out. I heard even Mark Hamill (Joker) was displeased that they cut a lot of stuff in the edited version. Anyway, this review concerns only the edited version. I shall review the UNCUT version seperately once I get it.

Summary: Better than the live action Batman flicks
Review: Excellent movie! Far better than the live action movies. Many questions regarding the entire case are answered, and how they bring the Joker back is a great plot line.

I do not know about the editing, as I am unaware of what was cut out, but the finished product is excellent, and any true Bat-Fan will not be disappointed!

Summary: edit version is too horrible
Review: I saw the cut and uncut and man the cut version was edited so much that it didn't even look like a movie. *spoiler* When Bonk was gassed instead of being shot the reanimation looked so fake. So did when tim pushed Joker to his electrocution instead of being shot. The weirdest part is that WB had to change some dialouges in the film too. I felt like it was edit so much that all of a sudden I find myself at the end already. The only good thing about the edit version is that it is better to watch on your t.v. rather then open your computer all the time just to watch the uncut one.

Summary: Hey, it is still Batman stuff!
Review: I purchased this DVD and was very pleased with it. I made the attempt to watch it first. Then, after watching it, I looked at the pieces that were removed. I agree with the other editorials that these were integral to the plot and it is a shame the censors came down on these scenes. HOWEVER! Put that aside and do not concern yourself with what could have been.

The movie that is before you is excellent. It appeals to both Batman and Batman Beyond fans. It is action packed and the plot is soooo interesting. My wife, who isn't into this stuff, watched this with me and really enjoyed it.

I recommend this highly and if you are a Batman fan, it is a must see because hey, it is still Batman stuff.

Now all we need is for Warner Bros to make the Long Halloween! That would be great.

Summary: The original was great. This edited DVD is terrible.
Review: The people who made "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker" are true artists in every sense of the word. They fully understand that things such as plot, storyline, and character development are crucial to good animation.

Unfortunatley, the executives at Warner Bros. decided that those things don't matter, and they edited the story for this DVD so as to make it radically different from what the story's creators had wanted their audience to see.

If anyone from from Warner Bros. is reading this, I want you to know that I am a 29 year old man with lots and lots of money to spend on DVDs. And I'm not giving you one penny for this one.

And I know that there are many others out there who are just like me.

Summary: A fun ride!! DVD
Review: First let me give you my thoughts on the DVD. The picture quality and sound go as high as 4 stars with the picture slightly higher. Great color and a very clean and smooth imaging.(See Titan A.E. for the best) Sound is spacious and at times the LFE hits as low as my subs can handle. Nice added features but see the movie(spoilers) first then explore the features. Overall great quality for your buck. This version is the edited version which seems to have hurt and enraged many fans. I have seen and own the uncut version and I feel that too much was taken out. A few more punches(even though that was the least of the cuts) would not have hurt. I do like the edited version and am happy to own it but I look forward to an offical uncut adult release with a content warning for parents. My final thought is directed to WB. With all that is going on in the world there is little that a cartoon(uncut or edited) can do that will make any difference.

Summary: Must See for Batman Beyond Fans
Review: I am a Batman Beyond fan, so I had to see this. I was not at all disappointed about this movie like the other reviewers. To be honest, I love this movie because it first answers the many questions I had about the TV show, and it added new elements that makes the movie stand out compare to the TV show. It reveal a different side of the original Batamn, which was unexpected. To know how the Joker return, you must see this movie. This movie was done a great job keeping viewers in suspense. There is also enough action packed into this 70 minute film to staify your need. To bring up another issue, I had never seen the uncut version, so I can't compare to this edited copy to the uncut copy. If you want to know what scenes were cut and edited; you can check it out at ign.com. I gave it four stars, because after reading what was edited, the movie would have definitely been a whole lot better. Even if it is edited, the concept is still there and the movie is still good.

Summary: BATMAN B(EY)OND
Review: If you didn't already know it - there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the edited/unedited version of BATMAN - RETURN OF THE JOKER - and you can make up your own mind about which one is best, which one should have been and what will happen next - but if you're looking to pick up BATMAN - ROTJ on DVD you will not be cheated, robbed or have your life or faith in Batman ruined in any way at all. Sporting a very nice transfer, beautiful sound (those with surround sound take note - a solid effort went into making this a experience for the ears as well as the eyes), and a solid story that outshines the live action films by miles - Batman: ROTJ is a perfect addition to your DVD collection. It also comes packed with special features - previews (of which there are many other WARNER releases and only one of the movie - sadly lacking the effective internet promo that was released on the Warner site), a behind the scenes documentary, deleated scenes (which were never antimated - but story boarded - yet still very clear and effective), animation tests, director/writer/producer commentary (which is wonderful - excellent behind the scenes conversations and funny asides, as well as trivia laden moments that will keep you intrested long after the movie is over), plus a nice BIO section with anitmated menu's and information (WARNING! - do not read the BIO's until after you have watched the film - they give away pretty much every twist in the movie - again WARNING!). In the end, despite the battle between versions this is a solid buy, entertaining and and excellent movie - and it is dark. Be warned on that end - this does push the limits - and it's worth it.

Summary: The best Batman movie in history
Review: This movie is for any one, child or adult, any one who is a Batman fan or just likes the series will enjoy this film. In my opinion, the movie is a pure acid-trip! The return of the Joker is just the best idea they ever had in the making of the new series and for all others. This movie answers all the questions you ever had about the Joker and Batman, including what happened to Harly Quinn, Robin and the Joker. Very graphic for an animated cartoon, the violence is sort of sutable for kids and to tell the truth the Joker in this movie isn't at all like the one in the Batman & Robin series or the first movie. In those he was crazy and funny but this time he's just scary and cruel. Lots of emotional damage between all of the characters, and heart stopping moments. When we first see the Joker he's creepy and haunting! The music is perfect, the voices of the characters are very good. Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Melissa Joan Hart and all others are well done! If you're a Batman fan and the Joker is you're favorite villian see this movie!
