Summary: A review of the edited Verison from a woman's perspective
Review: First off, let me say I have never seen the unedited version before, but I'd love to see it. The edited version was great. The voice acting, the plot, the anime inspired look, the action, and the charectorizations were all perfect. The new Gotham City look is just awesome. This may be the best Batman movie I've ever seen!

I must say that I have never liked the Batman character (I'm referring to the one from the Animated series) before because he was too buffed, so rich, so unemotional, just not my kind of guy. But the new guy, Terry McGinnis is cute, lean, funny, hip, and I can relate to him. Heck, if he was a real guy I'd be trying to hook up with him. Also it was great to see the Joker again. He is clearly one of the greatest villians of all times and his new look was hip and sexy. I highly recommend this moive to anyone who likes action flicks, japanese animation, or the Batman series in general. This movie delivers great action, nice animation, great performance by the voice actors, and is very stylish.

Summary: The Greatest Batman Movie, Ever
Review: This is by far the greatest Batman movie ever. Beyond any live action monstrosity or even the enjoyable Batman Beyond: The Movie, this is a masterwork. Tying the new Batman Beyond to the original Dark Knight, this masterpiece of animation shows exactly what a feature length cartoon adventure ought to be.

I was unaware that this was an edited version of the movie; it stands well by itself, and so any editting does not destract from the project.

Summary: This a good Batman stuff
Review: Well fellow critics I have now seen this new Batman for the first time and quite frankly he is good. I am old enough to go back to the sixties when Batman came to life to TV along with Robin. The sixties show had a definite 60's atmosphere that was a slightly goofy (but I liked it). These new (90's version) of Batman are good also and one must give credit to Warner Brothers for making the animated versions loyal to the atmoshere of the comic books. Batman is a dark and unusual character. The animated series including this movie continue to show that. The Return of the Joker has an excellent storyline that actually is more interesting that some of the real life movies. Mark Hamil is superb at playing the character of the Joker. This movies never drags and has a great soundtrack. My two year old loves this movie and my wife also liked it. As far as not letting children watch it, I don't personally get it. The movie is more of high stakes action than pure gruesome violence. There is no bad language or sexual content. Edited vs Unedited. Never saw the unedited.

Summary: Better than I expected.
Review: I like the whole Batman genre, but I'm not a Bat-freak, so I think I approached this video with a little more reserve than other viewers. I also tend to prefer Japanese animation and story-telling to American, but this film truly proved to be enjoyable and held me rapt the entire while.

The animation is not the world's best, and is even a little simplistic in parts, but it serves well for the moments that matter, and is satisfactory, overall. The dialogue may be the best part--the characters are decidedly human and multi-faceted, and I was genuinely taken in by the plot, and quite disturbed by the "critical" scene. I must say, the movie was rather effective and occupied my mind for days, it was so engrossing.

Mark Hamill does excellent work as the Joker, as does Kevin Conroy. Terry's voice-actor is perfectly smarmy while emoting competence at the same time. I hope the rumors are true of a live-action movie being in the works; I would appreciate any info on this, as the entire Batman Beyond series has been very lovingly and intricately woven.

Summary: FANTASTIC
Review: This movie has some of the best villains I have ever seen. The hyena boy alone is worth the cost of the video!

Summary: Liked the edited one - LOVED the uncut
Review: Yes, they DID edit out some important stuff, Yes most dialogue cuts are utterly pointless (they even edited the dialogue in the bugs bunny cartoon Terry is watching with Ace) and yes the original one has a lot more power, but the bottomline is: this movie is still good. Not as good as the original, but good. The animation, the story, the voice acting... everything works. Oh, and Mark Hamill? Talk about his best portrail of the Clown Prince ever! The movie is recommendable in both it's forms, but if you have a chance to see the UNCUT version, do it! Or get the screenplay so you know what you're missing. FUNNY NOTE: Did anyone else notice that Terry is suddenly wearing a seatbelt when his driving the batmobile in the edited version? He isn't in the uncut.

Summary: A MUST for any Batman fan.....
Review: This only gets four stars from me because Warner Brothers backed down by policital preasure during the elections and had this masterpiece edited to conform to a more acceptable version to appease political preasures. But, it's worthy of FIVE stars! Quite simply, this movie is magnificant. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen from beginning to end. The story is captivating and full of shocking plot twists. This movie definately could of aired on the big screen and would of been considered THE best Batman film ever to grace the silverscreen. Being that this film was made in Japan, it has all of those little special details that make Japanese Anime so great. I highly recommend seeing it. I have seen the original un-cut version, and do prefer it, but if you did not see the original you definately wouldn't be disappointed watching this final version. It's that good!

I love this film!

Summary: Something old, something new, a new bat, an old enemy, too.
Review: I have come to a couple of conclusions:

1) This cartoon ranks in the my Top Ten feature-length cartoons of all-time among titles such as TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE, G.I. JOE: THE MOVIE, MULAN, NINJA SCROLL, THE LION KING, and THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

2) The folks at WB are cowards while at the same time, watching out for their "movie-going public". Yes, I agree that you should have made this film watchable for the kiddies, but there should have been a director's cut to please the REAL fans. I'm sick of being told by WB that Stanley Kubrick wanted digitally-enhanced characters in EYES WIDE SHUT to cover up the nudity and that the new Batman Beyond 'toon was a bit too dark and violent. It's time for them to get their heads on straight and stop deciding what we NEED to view.

That being said, the new Batman Beyond video is STILL a masterpiece. A hell of a ride that starts with a bang and keeps moving from there. Not to say that the whole thing is spectacular...the beginning is a bit silly as Batman attempts to foil a high-tech hardware robbery by the Jokerz-gang, but it is necessary to move the plot forward.

The music is a mix of Shirley Walker and techno-speed metal. While it keeps the new-style Batman in check, it reverts to the old animated-series...

And speaking of the old animated-series...an old enemy has returned. He's tanned, he's rested, and he's ready to go. Mark Hamill reprises his role as the one, the only Joker. And once again, he's ready to go to great lengths to put a smile on Gotham's face.

Only problem is there's a new Batman who has ZERO experience dealing with the likes of the Joker and the old Batman is LONG since retired...and the more-than-obvious fact that the Joker should be DEAD or well into his 80's...

So, the mystery begins and the answers Terry McGinnis seeks go even DEEPER than he thinks. Answers that involve the facts behind Barbara Gordon and Bruce Wayne's bitterness, the fate of Tim Drake AKA Robin, and the Joker's ressurection.

Excellent animation, dark noir-ish mystery, a great story, and disturbing revelations earn this Bat-adventure a spot among some of the coolest animated epics of our time. Check it out.

A small mark off for the deleted scenes(or SCENE) being an animatic that didn't even get animated. Not ONLY would I have LIKED to see MORE deleted scenes, they could have at LEAST animated and ADDED it to the film. It would have made a difference. But, there is a fun little commentary track by the creators(who NEGLECT to mention the edits they made to the film) and the music video, "Crash" by Mephisto Odyssey and Static X, as well as a making-of documentary.

Summary: Very Enjoyable if only...
Review: Taken as it is, Return of the Joker is a really fun movie to watch. Even if you're a fan of the Batman Animated Series fan that never watched Batman Beyond because it's just not the same (like me), this still has some things in here (long flashbacks, a fight between Joker and Wayne inside the batcave) that you will enjoy. You learn a lot about what ever happened to many of the old characters (Batman, Robin, Batgirl). The action is fun to watch and the sound track is good. The 'Crash' music video by Mephisto Odyssey is also a nice bonus to watch.

There are several reasons why I only gave this 4 stars. Just knowing that this is the cut version automatically took some of the enjoyment out of it. Most of the cuts could be even seen as trivial, especially when you take a look back on Mask of the Phantasm (just as violent as some of the Tim Burton movies really). I won't list the differances here since they're already posted all over the internet and easily found. But knowing that does take away from the movie. Another warning, the package notes 'Deleted Scenes' as one of it's Special Features. What you actually get is animated story boards of ONE deleted scene with voices (no sound effects or music, just the voices).

If you can get past the simple fact of all the censorship, it's still a very fun movie to watch. If you liked any of the other animated features (Mask of the Phantasm, SubZero or Batman Beyond:The Movie), you'll like this.

Summary: Censorship Jerks
Review: The undedited version of this movie was wonderful, incredible, spectacular even! Unfortunately, that version does not show up on this DVD! Instead the public is fed a watered down, gutted version that tears all the soul out of a true masterpiece. The censors and executives at Warner Brothers have ruined what once was a fine movie. Don't buy this DVD until Warner Brothers releases an edition that hasn't been reduced to kiddie-...!
