Summary: McQueen's best work!!
Review: This was a monumental performance by Steve McQueen that should have been up for an Oscar nomination. Dustin Hoffman also gives a great performance in a supporting role. The movie by Franklin J. Schaffer gives us an errie sence of what life was like on Devil's Island in French Guyana. The images will linger with you for a long while.

Summary: One of the best movies ever!
Review: I saw the movie for the first time when I was about 12 yrs old and loved it! Now at 34 yrs old I 've probably seen this movie now about 40 times and each time is as good as the first!
Since then about 2 years ago I was finally able to get a copy of the book "Papillon" by Henri Charriere (Papillon) in English and found this book to be also one of the best books I've ever read! Yes the movie has it's differences and to be exactly like the book it would of been another hour longer(which I would of had no problem with). If you like movies about history, people overcoming great odds, human bonding and even adventure this movie has it all.
This movie is not only a MUST see it is a MUST own!!!

Summary: How good is this really?
Review: Papillon is a very good movie, although depressing. For the occasional individual of Portuguese decent, this film may remind them of the "old country", and I can understand where they might find a morsel of encouragement in this 3 hour metaphor for: "Life really stinks, then you die". But, if you're looking for a good escape flick, then I would recommend Billy Wilder's Stalag 17 instead. Papillon features many escape attempts; all are short-lived, and the escapee's subsequent sentence/punishment is further increased. People can be very cruel. Papillon's butt-buddy (Dustin Hoffman) breaks his glasses, loses his mind, and ends up feeding chickens for the remainder of his natural life somewhere in the South Pacific. Papillon (Steve McQueen) is beaten, starved, beaten again, but somehow never loses his desire to be free. Fantastic. I closing, I'd like you to consider that a raft made of coconuts, lashed together with pubic hair is an unlikely recipe for a successful ocean voyage.

Summary: Welcome to the penal colony of French Guianna.
Review: This is an all time classic. It is a great action adventure movie that holds up even today. It is the story of Papillon, played magnificently by Steve McQueen. He is sent to prison for life for murdering a pimp. He struggles for his life and for freedom. He is the embodiment of sheer will. He refuses to be tamed and he never gives up though put through incredible cruelty and impossible odds. Dustin Hoffman is also great. Watching these two great actors from different generations and different methods is a great joust. The story is based on the life of Henri Charriere who was sent to Devils Island and finally escaped to freedom. The movie is set in Jamaica and Spain. The settings seemed so real that a visiting Charriere said that he "feared for his freedom." This was a huge box office smash and one of the tops at the box office in 1974.

Summary: This Epic Sized Film Holds An Epic Sized Lesson.....
Review: ....which is never, ever, ever give up. Your buddies may not make it, the nuns may turn you in and your closest pal may turn into a case of deep denial in order to survive, but life is worth going thru all that in order to live free...I remember how when I first saw it at sixteen or seventeen, I fell asleep on it; only when I saw it recently I was able to take this stand on it. Sure, there are long passages of dialog-less scenes but the visuals, indeed, make up for them, especially if you view the movie letterboxed.

Summary: beautiful. powerful. epic. ...
Review: Steve McQueen gives what has got to be the performance of his career. It is truly a shame he was not even nominated. The color and quality of the film on DVD is truly amazing. This is a stark yet beautiful film full of adventure and pathos. Any and all fans of great acting(McQueen and Hoffman)and breathtaking filmmaking will not want to miss this.

Summary: THE SAGA OF HENRI CHARRIERE
Review: While not alltogether satisfying as a whole,PAPILLON is still well worth seeing. The film has long stretches without dialogues that can annoy you considering the running time of the movie.Parts of the script are not clear;the best example being the use of flashbacks.McQUEEN and HOFFMAN are well casted.Still ,something is missing to make it great and unique. To excuse the scriptwriters,i shall say that the book was not easy to adapt to the screen.Since it was a true story,it can't be can like a novel.Watch out for that scene in the leperous colony.Favorite moment:PAPILLON and his friend being fooled by a guy who promised them a boat for their money.

Summary: What an epic adventure....
Review: You can truly empathize with Papillon. The French penal system of the era was abysmal. This film does a great job of showing just how awful the prisoners had it.

I imagine that most of them just gave up on living. But, Papillon would not. He tries many times. Crossed and double crossed. Still he goes on.

This is a long film. On regular TV, they show it as Part 1 & 2.

This is another must have for anyone interested in historical adventure films.......

Summary: Without a doubt one of the Top Ten films ever!
Review: The star power alone is worth watching. Steve McQueen shows even more depth than in his other great films such as the Getaway, and The Great Escape. Dustin Hoffman gives a tremendous performance, and could be his best out of a respectable film career, which includes movies like Outbreak and Rain Man! Directer Franklin J. Schaffner tops his gritty WWII film Patton in this great tale of the only man to break frome the notorious Devil's Island. Based on the true story of Henri Chairree you will be blown away in this classic film.
