Summary: Great technology - marginal storyline
Review: Superbit technology is distinctly better than typical DVD quality. The video is much clearer and even the sound is improved. Remarkable! The movie itself is marginal as far as the storyline and acting but Superbit technology almost makes up for it.

Summary: Fun Science Fiction Movie, But Disappointing
Review: This was a fun movie to watch...at some parts. Others were pretty disappointing. I think the worst part of the movie is the very beginning. Just when you think a movie is at an all-time low, it gets even lower. I don't know about anyone else, but those aliens in the beginning were a major turn-off in the film. I mean, come on, they look like giant donuts! Give me a break! But, like I said, the movie does have some interesting parts, funny one-liners from Bruce Willis, and just downright "cool" scenes. Check it out...but take heed and fast forward through the first five or ten minutes...you'll be glad I warned you!

Summary: The best science fiction farce ever made
Review: This is not a parody of science fiction films or ordinary science-fiction-comedy as I've heard some deride it. It is pure caper-oriented farce (yes, there IS a difference!) just like they used to make! This gem, although fast-forwarded a few centuries, is full of the old standards: wacky over-the-top characters, sight gags, a confusing but navigable plot, the good-old "everybody is after prize" chase, the obligatory "hide everyone in a confined space" routine, and plenty of action and shameless sex appeal (some violent and oh-so-racy, so tuck in the kiddies before popping it in the VCR!). On top of this are amazing and loud visuals, and what seems to be the Besson standard of an anti-hero becoming a real hero having found their special something.

See, it, buy it, love it, loan it to a friend!

Summary: Superbit makes this worth owning
Review: Let's face it. The storyline has more holes in it than swiss cheese. Chris Tucker is way over the top. Bruce Willis sleepwalks through the role. Gary Oldmans southern accent might fool some people in Asia. But, sometimes a movie is worth watching once you stop being critical and just enjoy the effects and sound. This movie is one of those.

The Superbit video transfer left my jaw hanging open. This was by far the most filmlike dvd i've ever watched. TFE has many very good special effects that largely benefited from the Superbit process. The video quality alone is worth 4 stars.

Then there is the DTS soundtrack. This soundtrack isn't as seperated sonically as other movies DTS soundtracks are but it is a huge improvement over the previous released version of TFE.

This dvd may be weak plot wise but it is a good benchmark dvd that would impress anyone.

Summary: One of my All-time Favorite Movies.
Review: This is a simply Great and fabulous 1997 Science-Fiction Comedy Fantasy that you must see! it's from Luc Besson and it is set in the future in New York City, a Taxi Driver named " Korben Dallas"
( Bruce Willis) who finds a beautiful Red-Headed Alien Girl named
" Leeloo" ( Milla Jocovich) who is secretly a powerful Being to
stop a evil from destroying the Earth. It offers plenty of Action and great Special Effects including a cool cast such as Chris Tucker, Ian Holm and Gary Oldman, rent it and take the ride.

other similar movies i would recommend: Stargate, Total Recall, The Matrix, Starship Troopers, Titanic, Con Air, The Rock, Armageddon, Dark Crystal and Blade Runner.

Summary: A better movie after I had seen it a few times
Review: Not a great movie, but a good movie. This being from outer space in the form of Milla Jovovich has come to save us from the big evil that is coming for us. Not that that is a bad thing. Could have been someone else we would have to watch for 2 hours.
The plot is a bit tired, but reworked well enough to have life in it. The view of the future is funny, the effects in the movie are well done, and some of the characters are very well played. Gary Oldman is his typical self in a Besson movie, over the top and a bit twitchy, but that is what makes watching him in a movie great. Willis is Willis, what can I say. Milla is a beauty, and that's always good. Better than average, but worth a watch or two.

Summary: Not sure it was worth the extra money, but...
Review: This DVD has no new features over the previous version availbe at the lesser price. I saw no difference at all on my 27" Sony Trinitron 4:3 ratio TV on my Sony DVD player, nor any difference through my Sony receiver to my 5.1 Digital Surround Sound. No, I am not bragging about my gear, much better gear in available, on any given item, I am just drawing a baseline. I have decent stuff, and could find no difference. The availability of DTS sound has replace the availability of 2-channel audio, which is an increase; my preference is to watch movies in DTS if that track is availible, however, I am not sure if I actually get better sound quality, of if it is all in my head. For video, the only way I could find a difference was when I put the DVD in my X-Box and compared frames in zoom mode. The Superbit was clearer at 10X zoom than the regular DVD was at 6X or maybe even 4X zoom. What exactly does this mean? Well, I imagine that on very high end gear, you may see a difference, or on very large screen equipment, you may benefit.
Myself, I enjoy the movie more after I had seen it a few times and after watching other film by Luc Besson. It is really not a bad movie at all, far better than many other movies I have forced myself to sit through.
As for the DVD itself, you may be better off getting the cheaper DVD. I wear glasses and my ears ring from years of working on jet aircraft in the military, so I don't get any benefits from the added bits on the disc.

Summary: How do I hate this movie? Let me count the ways:
Review: 1. The Fifth Element is one those trashy, disgustingly arrogant films that sneer at Joe Assembly-line-worker, "Look at me. I'm smarter than you. I dress better than you. I have better hair than you. Therefore, I'm better." HA! Luc Besson's effort at making the next Star Wars collapses under the weight of its own smugness.

2. Chris Tucker's character - Imagine someone who combines the most annoying aspects of Prince, Dennis Rodman, Little Richard, and James Brown. If you can, then you probably still can't conjure up an image as annoying as the character in TFE. This guy makes Jar Jar Binks seem appealing by comparison. No exaggeration. If life was fair in the world of TFE, then this no-talent human paperweight would be slinging corned beef hash at some intergalactic waffle house instead of being a hugely successful pampered male diva. But life is unfair there too.

4. Gary Oldman's character - Don't get me wrong, he's a great actor. But his character here has the phoniest southern accent since Keanu Reeves in The Devil's Advocate. I say, I say, I find Foghorn Leghorn much more believable. And what's with the hair?

3. Bad story and plotting- The story makes no sense. Gary Oldman's character's motivations are never explained. The "evil" force is not even given minor development.

4. Too ugly and ridiculous to even look at - Bad costumes, bad sets, bad hairdos, bad special effects. And one more thing to think about: McDonald's workers that look and dress like girls you see in Hooters?

5. Another bad movie that hides behind its computer generated effects. Read my reviews for Armageddon and Independence Day.

6. ...And most important. It got made in the first place.
