Summary: Exceptional War Film
Review: An exceptional war film in every sense, it pulsates with artistic ambition. It reaches for truth, struggles for greatness--and almost succeeds. The central character, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), tells the story of his danger-filled journey toward a fateful meeting with a man named Kurtz, a highly decorated officer who the Army contends has gone mad.

Summary: DVD version is a whole new experience
Review: I won't comment on the film itself - the list of other 5 stars reviews speak for themselves.

Having never seen the movie in a theater, I thought that the DVD version would be interesting to watch in comparison to the VHS

I was blown away! If you have any kind of solid enterntainment system with center, surrounds and subwoofer (eg. 5.1), you will see and hear the movie in a whole new way. The cinematography comes to life with the music and the sound editing in a way that is just not possible on VHS. This was always one of my favorite movies and this experience has taken it to a new level.

So buy the DVD and see it all over again for the first time.

Summary: I Love The Smell Of Napalm In The Morning.
Review: Hands down, this film is a masterpiece. Great story (Joseph Conrad's "Heart Of Darkness) set against the Vietnam War. Great acting and great directing. This is a hypnotic film about man vs. man. Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper and Marlon Brando all turn in great performances. This is a must have for any film collector.

Summary: The Ultimate DVD
Review: Awesome sound and picture quality. I could hear the choppers flying around in my living room. Unique sound experience if you have 5.1 decoder and surround sound speakers. Best sound I ever heard so far in a DVD movie. This is the way to bring back to market place an old movie. As of 3/22/2000 ranked 34th place on amazon's top seller chart. It will move up, it is a good buy at 20 bucks. The movie itself is great, but read the other reviews to find out more. I was simply amazed by the sound and picture quality of this DVD.

Summary: anamorphic bliss if you know what it is
Review: Having made films in hollywood for over 12 years I can with reasonable confidence make commentary on a brilliant film. First of all Joseph Conrad's novel of ivory trade morphed into our national war of shame abroad was made with the utmost insanity. I have worked with the special effects men (i cant say their name without permission)who created the most dramatic explosion on film EVER. This is not a war movie as much as it is the the filmic representation of madness defining insanity and finding that insanity was regarded as unsound if the Army didn't approve it. Thats the maddening part. Now with the crazy sub-plot aside, the visual recording of each scene which flows without a seam from one insane act of retribution against an unseen enemy and the enemy within, Apocalypse Now will stun your eyes with the proper aspect ratio (DVD/Anamorphic)cinematography at its absolute unequal.Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando gave their soul to this film. If you need more information, just find the film Mrs. Coppolla made during the filmming itself. Never get off the boat. Absolutely G....mned right...unless youre' going all the way. The metaphor of this story and the way it was made represent the duality of good and evil and how crossing the bridge, or getting off the boat take you into insanity. Insanity that is not recognized as regulation madness. Just grab a bottle of JD (or what ever you drink) and a pack of smokes and enjoy this one alone....its meant to be that way. Special recommendation: learn to love "those little black bars on the screen" they show you the whole picture...the way it was intended to be seen. Get a book called "HOW TO READ A FILM" BY James Monaco...this will explain anamorphic camera psychology and why the 133:1 TV ratio ruins the deeper parts of films transfered to video format. so long and ENJOY the TRIP.

Summary: I'm impressed.
Review: There was a reason this movie won oscars for cinematography and sound, and those reasons become very clear when watching the DVD. The picture quality is excellent, and the sound quality is, well, above extraordinary. Of course it's not a historical depiction of the Vietnam War...read The Heart of Darkness then you will know what the movie is really about.

This is definitely the best DVD experience I have had yet, next to the gunfight scene in Heat.

Summary: A Movie for All Time
Review: If you are looking for a movie that glorifies WAR, then keep looking. This movie is a dark and emotional journey into the deep abyss. I found it riviting and exhasting. The DVD version of this epic is brillantly stunning. The clarity of the widescreen is breath taking. I felt the commentary of Coppola explaining the different versions of the film and the myth of the destruction of the village quite interesting. This is a must have for any DVD collection. IT is worth picking up just for the scenes with the young Robert Duvall.

Summary: Coppola at his Greatest
Review: This is Conrad's allegory of life itself -- far more than a war movie about Vietnam, although it captures the insanity and confusion of war as well as any other (contrasted with the contrived political statement that was Oliver Stone's "Platoon" -- the left-wing equivalent of "The Green Berets").

Coppola's direction is at peak form. The photography is spectacular. It assaults you with one unforgettable moment after another.

The great crime about this movie is that Hollywood ripped off Coppola by awarding the Oscar to the mediocre "Kramer versus Kramer".

Summary: Watch This Movie
Review: While Apocalypse Now is nto the greatest "war" movie, it is one of the greatest thought-provoking films ever made. You sit in awe as spine-chilling scenes unfold before your eyes and you sit and ponder as to what is the signigicance of waht you are seeing. This movie contains perhaps the greatest quote ever about the fate of the human race - "This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but with a whimper".
