Summary: Viggo Mortensen must have REALLY needed cash
Review: I think Viggo Mortensen is an incredible actor and has made some incredible movies, but I read somewhere that he's taken roles in films just because he needed the money to support his family and his art. This film must have been one of them. It was laughable, and not in a good way. Terrible movie. Mortensen does look very sexy in this film, and that would be about the only reason I would recommend to see this movie. I gave it 2 stars for that reason only.

Summary: Barely watchable
Review: I'm really surprised at the level of enthusiasm for this flick. I was barely able to make it the end, and instantly regretted that I bothered to do so. Pretty mundane acting all-around, especially from the muttonchopped fellow. At least it has Robert Forster in a couple of scenes, looking fairly amused by being in them.Really, this movie is not the best gangster flick since "Scarface." Please. It's basically just very much a B-movie, with low funding and hammed-up acting along with ludicrous premises. Expect to see this VERY late some night on the USA channel. Don't hesitate to switch to Howard Stern of the Home Shopping Network.

Summary: GREAT EXPERTATIONS
Review: It was a good movie and kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through it. The acting was brilliant by everyone in the film, and thought all the actors played their roles well. It had a bit of everything in it,excitement, sadness, plently of action. I thought the end was brilliant when Viggo Mortensen carried the mafia boss out in his arms, and I cried with him when they killed his girlfriend. I would watch the film again amd again. Just two words descibe it ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!and so was Viggo Mortensen he played a brilliant part!!

Review: It was a good movie for all who like B movie. I liked it, but it felt like it was missing something. I'd still see it again only because I like movie like this. It's on my recommendation list.

Summary: This is a REALLY bad film
Review: The only reason to watch this film is if you must have a Viggo Mortensen eye-candy fix. This is one of the crappiest things I have seen in a long, long time. The script is something they pulled out of the closet from 1973 and never bothered to update. It has some of the worst dialogue I have ever heard: Nouri, playing the cardboard-cutout mafia don, is the only actor who somehow manages to deliver his lines without sounding like someone wound him up. And let us not even begin to talk about the rest of the characters...I defy anyone to tell me what the accent is that you very occasionally hear Mortensen use. What make this movie even more of a disappointment is that the opening sequence and the first 5 minutes of the film are very well done and set you up for a decent film experience...and then you wait in vain.

The story itself is well written, with plot twists, suprises and a gratifying conclusion. The director's guidance and the cinematographer's visionary skills are to be praised as well. However, the true mastery in this piece is in the acting. Viggo Mortensen and his counterpart Ryo Ishibashi deserve the highest marks. Their realistic, on-screen duo performance makes Gibson and Glover in Lethal Weapon and Tucker and Chan in Rush Hour, pale in comparison. Overall, I highly recommend American Yakuza as a solid piece of work, for all discerning film-goers.

Summary: Yakuza Adventure
Review: This film was a brilliant surprise in comparison to the many "mafia", and "karate" movies available today. This film was an intelligent, alternative to the standard "shoot first and ask questions later", action films that are so popular in the nineties. Viggo Mortensen plays a character that was released from prison, and accidentally saves a member of the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) and thereby achieves a high status within the Yakuza. And this is just the beginning of one of the richest action movie plots in the last century. Not only do the actors give incredible, believable performances, but the plot is plausible as well. I will not go into further details on the plot for fear of giving something away, but suffice it to say, it is filled with twists, turns, surprises, and REALISTIC dialogue. My highest recommendation of this film is that their action scenes are not exaggerated. They are things that could realistically happen. No one, out-runs explosions, no one dodges an unheard of amount of bullets, and the characters don't all blow things up first and ask questions later. The characters have depth, and are intelligent, and very well acted. I cannot stress enough that this is a quality piece of film, far beyond the capacity of most action films. If you are in the mood for tense, and electrifying action that is plausible and realistic see this movie!

Review: This movie is about honor, and family. Although the director tries to show a parallel between the Italian mafia and the Japanese yakuza, one glaring difference stands out. The mafia is held together by fear, while the yakuza is held together by loyalty. Honor, family, and loyalty: Three things we all can use more of. The Japanese cultural tradition of honor leading to tragedy runs throughout. An inspiration.
