Summary: "the conclusion of all our yesterdays"
Review: Based on Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend", which was recommended to Charlton Heston by Orson Welles, and one that Heston was inspired to make into a film, is a truly creepy sci-fi/horror classic. Heston is marvelous as Colonel Robert Neville, a scientist who is immune to the plague that resulted from biological warfare, due to an experimental vaccine he injected himself with. The survivors infected with the plague are hooded mutants that cannot see in the daylight, and are bent in destroying all the attributes of civilization that remain on earth, crying "burn, burn, burn !" as they pile books in a fiery heap. Their leader is a former news anchor played to the hilt by Anthony Zerbe, who warns the zombie "Family" of the evil created by the "users of the wheel".
It is all quite thought-provoking, and has several connotations to terrorism today, and also has symbolism relating to Christianity; at one point Heston is tied up in a crucifixion pose, and his blood, turned into a serum, can save the remnant of humanity. There are a few reminders from the Book of Revelation, where of course, Jesus said "I am the Alpha and Omega". Rosalind Cash is lovely as Lisa, one of the remnant hiding in the hills, and her relationship with Heston is a rare instance of an interracial love affair from that era. Films from the 1970s fascinate me, with the hair and fashion styles, and 8-track tapes in the cars.
This film has fabulous cinematography by Russell Metty of a deserted, devastated Los Angeles, a good score by Ron Granier, and fast-paced, disquieting direction by Boris Segal that will occasionally make your heart skip a beat with fright.
Total running time is 98 minutes.

Review: If you have not seen The Omega Man then please do not read my review as it will spoil the movie for you. For those of you who have seen this movie then maybe you will know what I am implying by my review title. Christ in the Bible is said to be the "Alpha and OMEGA". Also after Heston's character finds the non-albino human survivors a little girl in this group asks him "Are you God?" (Huh?) And as all basic students of the bible know Christ's shed blood is said to save all Humanity from sin. Exactly what is the amazing antidote that will save the surviving humans made of? - CHARLTON HESTON'S BLOOD! (It gets weirder folks!) If you are still not convinced that Heston's character is being portrayed as a messiah figure then the ending scene when Heston is SPEARED and killed (as Christ was in the New Testament) will have to convince you of my thesis. Watch! The ending image of the movie is of Charlton Heston lying dead with his head drooped on his breast and his arms both raised up in a CRUCIFIXION type position!!! I cannot believe that all of the reviewers of this flick could have missed these images that were deliberately placed to convey some sort of hidden arcane message to the audience. If you think that I am full of baloney then watch the film again and see.
I gave it a 4 as it is classic Heston and great movie fun to us generation Xers.

Summary: Charlton Heston is "The Omega Man"
Review: This would be nothing more than an average "B" movie but for the presence of Charlton Heston who elevates the material into a very good science fiction flick. Heston plays Neville, the last uninfected man on a plague ravaged earth. The first half of the movie when Heston is on his own is much superior; the film loses narrative drive when he meets up with some of the other more or less infected human survivors. There are some inspired scenes, particularly the one before the credits in which Heston tools around through the empty streets of Los Angeles in an enormous convertible. My favorite scene is that of Heston, on the other side of the generation gap, watching a film of "Woodstock" and sardonically speaking the words along with the flower child on screen.
Anthony Zerbe is good as Neville's primary enemy, Matthias. The movie is greatly enhanced by the haunting score which will stick with you long after the film is over. The plot is a little silly - why doesn't Neville just leave Los Angeles for less populated parts, and why don't the infected just burn him out of his house - but the movie is ultimately all about atmosphere, and I found the atmosphere very convincing. The acting, the music, and some sublime scenes make this one of the better post-apocalyptic movies ever made.

Review: There are many flicks that define and actor and others will remember them by a groundbreaking role. The film does not always have to be an academy award winner or a huge box office success. When you think of Sci-Fi and horror, Charlton Heston may not be the first one that comes to mind, but he should be! Two of the finest Sci-Fi movies are credited to him, "Planet of the Apes" and This Horror Classic. The omega man was one of the best post "apocalyptic" movies of the 70's. The atmosphere of the film, the script and the sets all lend to the overall effectiveness of the film. Chuck plays what we believe to be the "last living" human on earth after a man made plague has wiped out all mankind. Biological weapons has turned those who refuse to die into blood sucking vampires who are bent into killing our hero to "save" humanity from rebuilding and making the same mistakes again. Wonderfully played by Anthony Zerbie, the main villian "Mathias" and his followers will stop at nothing to kill Heston, for he blames him for all mankinds mistakes, not to mention the fact that Heston is seeking out and sytematicaly killing all his men searching for Mathias. Great music score by Ron Grainer and a fine supporting cast make this a Sci-Fi classic. Memorable lines and scenes make this movie one to watch over and over again. Sure, is the movie dated and predictable, yes, but it is supposed to be. Plucked right out of the 70's, loaded with messages and images of the day, it's a wild ride you won't soon forget! Definitely a "lost" classic now thankfully found a home on DVD.

Summary: Mediocre Sci-Fi Thriller
Review: With no pun intended, there is a germ of a good story here but the way it's executed is laughable. The direction and script are flat. The thrills and chills aren't all that thrilling and chilling. Attempts at gallows humor are lame at best. Charlton Heston seems to be going through the motions here. Rosalind Cash delivers a cliched soul-sister act. "The Family", led by a usually reliable Anthony Zerbe, are laughable instead of scary in their black cloaks, sunglasses, and spooky eyeballs. Do yourself a favor and see the basic premise of this film executed better in Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later".

Summary: If Rambo was a doctor...
Review: Omega Man is the story of one man's existence in a post-chemical warfare world. Charlton Heston plays that last man. The last one on earth that is. Actually, he's the cured oned. Heston's world is filled with specter like humans that have succumb to the plague. The conflict of the movie is about these two forces, both physically and symbolically. The old world conflicts with the new. Both sides realize there should be a change, they just disagree on the minor components of it all.
Enough about plot though, overall I thought the movie was okay. The concept was really good, because dysfunction ideas are always good, and the acting was decent. Yet this movie really has nothing to brag about. It's Ramboesque with a sci-fi twist, but overall it's just average.

Summary: While there Direction Mis-steps, Heston Delivers
Review: "The Omega Man", directed by Boris Sagal,stars the impeccable Charlton Heston in one of his many great performances. His acting had to be on cue to make this otherwise possibly slow pitcure excellent. The movie is based on the vampire novel by horror author Mattheson. The movie like the book is intriguing because it switches teh story around. In the movie, halfmen/halfmutants roam the earth and Heston believes he is the only man alive (in teh book, it was vampires who roamed the earth.
Heston is great as a solidary man struggeling to survive. He happens upon others who have not turned into the new breed of zombies and develops a surum to save them all. Ultimately, he sacrifices all, in a messiahnic pose, to save others willing to make the choice.
The hollywood sets are a little too obvious and one feels as if they are on a movie set much of the time, Anthony Zerbee is great as well as Rosaland Cash. A young Eric Laneuville of "St Elsewhere" and "A Force of One" fame is also in the filk. All in all, I love this film, but a little more so as a kid than as an adult.

Summary: Not great, but good and memorable
Review: A man-made plague devastates humanity and kills almost everyone. The two groups left: a small group of immunes, led by Charlton Heston (who helped create the plague, then found a vaccine, albeit a bit late), and a group of civilization-hating infectees, led by a charismatic hate-monger seeking vengeance.
There's lots of gloom and doom, a striving for hope and reason amongst the chaos and ruin, some good acting, an okay love story, and lots of devastation. It's not the best post-Apocalyptic film (I prefer "The Stand"), but it's pretty good, and it sticks with you.
