Summary: There is no middle-ground
Review: Viewers of this film fall solidly into 2 categories. 'loved it' or 'hated it' depending on how much you love grand conspiracies, and stories that make you either suspend belief or disbelieve. The Matrix is a wonderful techno-fairy-tale, follow the white rabbit, be swept down the rabbit hole, believe or cease to exist. I (along with all the rest of the coppertops) think it is thought provoking, exciting, and if you're willing to accept the different reality you have to accept it completely. A wonderful offering, and I look forward to the remaining 2 films in the trilogy.

Summary: The future of film making?
Review: Want to see the future of film-making? Look no further than "The Matrix"! Truely stunning use of cutting-edge film-making technology combines with a strong plot and great characterisation (Fishburne is particularily good) to produce a film experience that will not be soon forgotten.

Summary: War of the Worlds
Review: War of the Worlds indeed. Every movie heavy on production values must balance on the fine line separating the tasteful and the gaudy, and were this fine line represented by a tightrope, Matrix would have long gone "splat" on the pavement.

I don't know about you, but I can't quite enjoy a movie in which the plot bends over backwards to accomodate the protracted fight sequences, which, in turn, are interrupted with a plethora of "bullet-cam" effects that let you appreciate every unrealistic punch as it lands and every bullet casually flying by. For the love of all that is decent, this is a movie, not a zero-gee martial arts manual!

If, through some unearthly effort, you manage to ignore the multi-million-dollar special effects and try, just try to concentrate on the actual plot, you will be surprised to see a unique storyline occasionally marred by bad acting. Perhaps you might think differently, but Neo (Keanu Reeves) looks like a bat out of hell during the first half of the Matrix, and drunk (on power?) in the second. Beastly.

This dark movie wouldn't have had nearly the same impact had it not raised the unanswerable question of "is reality really real?" The dilemma is played out beautifully throughout the movie, although the producers certainly went to great lengths to illustrate the point to even the most dim-witted of viewers.

I'll go as far as to call this the best science-fiction movie of the year, most probably because there are so few of them made. If you derive entertainment from drop-jaw special effects rather than a spotless plot, I honestly recommend this to you.

Summary: Don't buy if you have a Samsung player it dosen't work
Review: Warner Bros screwed this one up big time. If you have a samsung player it will not load the DVD. And on some other machines the fight scenes repeat over and over. Rent it first to see if it works on your machine.

Summary: DVD Is Great Except for...
Review: Warner made a mistake on this otherwise perfect release by not including the excellent theatrical trailer. Actually, the trailer is on the disc, but you can watch it only through an IBM-compatible computer. If you can get it to run, it plays in a very small window, and if your computer doesn't have a DVD-ROM, too bad for you.

In the trailer, the scene where Keanu runs up a wall plays to Enigma's "The Eyes of Truth" (from their second CD). Though not used during the scene in the film, the menus on the DVD play in a loop to a similar-sounding theme. This music really sets the tone for the film and the trailer's exclusion from the movie part of this disc is yet another reason to wonder what kinds of thought processes occur in the brains of marketing people, if any.

Summary: WARNINING CONSUMERS
Review: Warning to people purchasing this DVD: Numerous copies are defective. I have gone through two copies, neither of which could be recognized on my DVD player (while all of my other DVD's can). When I went to replace the copies at my local store, I was told that eight had been returned within a two hour period. The encoding process went horribly wrong in this case. A serious bummer.

Summary: The defining movie of the cyberpunk genre!
Review: Watching this movie sent my mind reeling through a world of chaos and technology. Grabbing hold and releasing only long enough to tighten its grip. The definative cyberpunk movie of the ninties. If you are a fan of science fiction or just looking for an action movie, this is a must get.
