Summary: Masterful
Review: As an Infantry Veteran, I loved this movie. I never saw Somalia, but I had buddies who did. Josh Hartnett played a very believable Ranger and Squad Leader.

"Blackhawk Down" is the story of a band of good soldiers serving a president who'd gladly get them killed to achieve his political ends. The tragedy and the courage are laid out before you, very lifelike.

Ridley Scott deserves great kudos for another lifelike masterpiece in the tradition of "Gladiator." He also deserves to get a Ronny for his portrayal of men fighting for freedom against a crushing tyranny.

This movie is very germaine for our times. It shows the incredible tyranny of the Somali Warlords and Islamic Fundamentalists with whom we find ourselves at war and the brave deeds of the Army Rangers and Delta Force who went up against them. The soldiers who fought in Somalia are an example to us all in these days. Hartnett and his fellow castmembers did an excellent job of portraying them. I say BRAVO! to them all.

Summary: the best non fiction movie ever portrayed
Review: I have seen several movie that were created to portray a real event. Shindler's List, A Thin Red Line, Platoon. All of these movies have very real qualities to them and are very dramatic in their settings as well as the context for which they portray. Black Hawk Down is the first movie that I have seen in a long time that actually took every part of the event apart and analyzed it to put it into a movie. Not only as a member of the army but also as a extensive student of the Somalia Operation I see that this movie is a presentation that deserves no less than five stars.

Summary: Great Movie but Pure Propaganda to Whip Up the Emotions
Review: This movie is realistic and as factually true as humanly possible. One thing is for sure, this movie has motives behind that are obvious to most people. People are too smart, today, to accept anything, but this movie is a very sophisticated propaganda piece that is mostly true but tweaked in such a way to accomplish their goal. The average American can't help but be [mad] at the end of the movie, but with reflection and time to digest and disect this movie leads one to the true motives of this movie. It still a good movie.

Thank the soldiers that went through that HELL. Bless the soldiers.

Summary: A Cinematic Triumph
Review: Honestly I do not know why the reviewers have slammed on this movie (see the movie report card from Entertainment Weekly). This movie is extremely intense and not for the faint-hearted. But for those who can stand a little violence, this film is a must-see. The acting was superb and the director did a phenomenal job. I felt shell-shocked when I left the theater, which says a lot--it didn't feel like I was watching a movie, it felt like I was there. Definitely one of the best movies of the year.

Summary: Don't waste your time
Review: This is one of the worst war movies ever made. The typical quick shot camera angels and very bad cinematography make this the worst display of an actual event ever on film. If you want to see a great war movie go rent Coppola's Apocalypse now Redux. It's based on the Vietnam War but is by far the best war movie ever made (well next to Saving Private Ryan). The only good thing about Black Hawk down is that it shows us folks in our late 20's what was going on while we were party and going to grunge concerts.

Summary: First eye opening film of 2002.
Review: True story directed by Rideley Scott of American soldiers fighting for their lives in the streets of Somalia in 1993 after two of their Black Hawks are shot down and they must fight their way out of the captital city before it's too late. Very violent and bloody, this movie did not glorify the war. it showed it as the dirty business it is. Staring Josh Harnet and Eric Bana. Music by Hans Zimmer.

Summary: Amazing job recreating historic event
Review: I just saw Black Hawk Down with a friend of mine a couple days ago and it was amazing. It was so intense. I can not believe that something like that really happened. Josh Hartnett was also very, very good-looking. He also did a great job portraying first time in charge Sgt. Matt Eversman. It is a movie that every loyal and patriotic American should go see. Or just any Josh Hartnett fan. Ridly Sccot did an amazing job. This is a movie that I will definitely be purchasing when it comes out to DVD.

Summary: Powerful Film
Review: But also a violent one, but this shows war and war involves a lot of bloodshed.

To be honest I was a bit nervous about this film being made, especially when it was being produced by Brukenheimer (remember Pearl Harbor?). But with advisors such as Lt Col. Danny McKnight (played by Tom Sizemore) and Ridley Scott directing, I was relieved so I decided to see this fim. It had good production values and a "Straight to the point" Script. However I warn those who have a weak stomach not to see this film, it is very disturbing.

But cudos to all who made this Film

Note: After this tragic episode, the US arm forces now do combat exercises in a mock city. To avoid a poteintal scenero being Catastrophic. Also the US will use full force to achieve objectives even when the operation seems easy.

Summary: When idealism meets reality
Review: This film is absolutely unbelievable...It is so deep on so many different levels...from the nature of U.S. interventionism, to the tremendous heroism deisplayed by men in battle, to the nature of the warrior brotherhood - an emotion unlike any other in the human experience. But it acheives this depth without attempting airy dialogue. It lets the actions of the men depicted speak for themselves. Hartnett's performance was outstanding. Some of the scenes in which his character, Sgt. Eversman, contemplates his own idealism are among the most quietly profound I have ever seen in a war film. The characters in this film are not archetypal, and that is the beauty of this film - its believability. Ridley Scott recognized that heroism was diplayed on such a scale that it needed no dramatization.

As a side note, this is the first film I have ever seen in the theater which received a standing ovation from the audience.

Summary: A powerfully crafted vision of urban war
Review: I'll leave it to more educated persons to comment on the historical accuracy of "Black Hawk Down," the war film directed by Ridley Scott. BHD tells the story of a U.S. Army mission to apprehend and transport certain individuals during a mission in the war-torn nation of Somalia. The bulk of the film is an intense recreation of the devestating urban combat that this mission entailed.

BHD is very much an ensemble piece, and is filled with many familiar names and faces: Sam Shepard (as the general in charge of the mission), Ewan McGregor (as a paper-pushing, coffee-making desk soldier who is thrust into combat), Orlando Bloom (as a gung-ho young soldier), Tom Sizemore, Jason Isaacs, and more. A particularly strong performance is delivered by Josh Hartnett as a thoughtful, idealistic young sergeant who must assume greater command responsibilities. The cast as a whole delivers solid performances; they portray their characters not as bigger-than-life heroes, but as real people struggling to deal with extreme circumstances.

The combat sequences are absolutely stunning. The film looks at times more like a documentary of war than like a recreation. There is much graphic gore and horrific violence, but the film is not, in my opinion, exploitative; rather, Scott's vision strikes me as honest and tragic.

"Black Hawk Down" does not feel like a "rah-rah" propaganda film. But it seems clear to me that Scott and his colleagues have a genuine compassion and respect for soldiers, and are trying to portray with integrity the horrible burdens shouldered by soldiers in conflict. Overall, "Black Hawk Down" is an intense, powerful film that might really leave you with something to think about.
