Summary: Face paced action, Chinese black magic, ghouls, and kung-fu
Review: Jack Burton (Kurt Russel) finds himself knee deep in a 2000 year old conspiracy to take over the world. It all begins when his friend, Wang Chi's girlfriend is abducted by Lo Pan, who needs to marry her to break his curse.

Mayhem married to humor ensues, and it is a sure fire movie for all ages. John Carpenter presents the perfect combination of Chinese fiction, Kung-Fu, funny one-liners, and a gun toting John Wayne-esque hero! A must see! END

Summary: Greatest movie ever made
Review: This is the single greatest movie ever made. Kurt Russell is a demi-god. All of his movies kick ass and when he teams up with John Carpenter, it's twice the action. David Lo-Pan is the greatest villain of all time. See this movie now

Summary: several decades too late
Review: There are three types of Big Trouble in Little China viewers. The first are those who found it racially offensive. The second are those who found it be a rollicking and farcical comedy/action blend and the third and I suspect the largest group are those who watch and think, what was all that about?

Big Trouble was a big bomb when it first came out because by the 80s Americans were nervous about finding humor in other cultures lest they be seen as racist and because most viewers want a movie to be one thing. They want a comedy or action. A drama or sci/fi or horor not blends. Movies that successfully blend genres are rare.

Looking at it today I tend to be one of those viewers who wonder wonder what the fuss was about. This is not a horrible movive but it's not great either. It would've been great as a 1930s weekly adventure serial but to modern eyes it seems campy. The special effects are deliberately(?) cheesy but has several funny moments. The plot is too off the wall to go into but the gist of it is don't mess with old wizards when they're in the mood for love.

Summary: One of the most entertaining movies ever made
Review: Comedy, action, script, story, plot, cast and beautiful women. All in a single movie. Not for everyone, this cult classic takes me backed to the films of Howard Hawks, with a rapid fire dialog that leaves you reaching for the rewind button about every 30 seconds to catch that one liner/pun/non-sequeter (sp??) you keep missing. Possibly one of the funniest action movies ever made. With a traditional plot of 2 bumbling buddies on a mission to rescue a damsel in distress, combined with fantasy, martial arts and magic. All in modern day California.

Summary: Lame commentary track
Review: I've actually owned this DVD for more than a year now, but I never bothered digging into the extras until recently, and I have to speak up on something. I have always loved BTLC -it's a great film that doesn't take itself too seriously and Kurt Russell was perfect in his role. Buy this DVD if you want a nice, remastered DTS soundtrack and a widescreen aspect -both are excellent. However, the commentary track leaves a lot to be desired. Better than two thirds of the duration of the film, all they did was turn down the volume and ramble on amongst themselves about film school theories and their careers. THEY HARDLY EVEN DISCUSSED THE FILM! What a wasted opportunity. The few times that John Carpenter actually makes any commentary about the film, he giggles and laughs his way through the scene under scrutiny.

I'm glad they had fun making the movie, and it's wonderful that John thinks it was all a giant joke, but bring something we don't already know to the commentary track, please.

Summary: men with baskets on heads annoy gay icon truck driver.
Review: Imagine 250kgs of extra mature cathedral city, smothered in a layer of puree'd stilton, rolled in cheesy wotsits and stored between the toes of an unhygeinic giant. Well, this film is cheesier.
Thing is, that's the beauty of it. The stunningly cliche'd one-liners flow from the lips of Russell with a poetic ferocity that would leave even Arnie in a state of quiet awe. When the mulletted Kurt drawls "it's all in the reflexes" you know he's right, and unlike todays movies you know he's not being ironic.
Jack Burton was born ready, were you?

Summary: ONE OF CARPENTER'S BEST
Review: Now, if you're looking for a horror or gore film, go see Carpenter's THE THING. But BTLC is an adventure flick: pure Americana fun. It's a little cheesey, but it adds to the flavor. From opening logos to to closing credits, (with music by Carpenter himself) you'll be wanting more. The features aren't bad, either. If you're already a big fan, the deleted scenes,(titled "Six Demon Bag") are sure to please. I already have my copy hanging on my wall. So go for it. Go on, I dare you.

Summary: Utterly Preposterous but Brilliant
Review: Lo Pan (James Hong) is an evil disembodied sorceror with dastardly plans to reincarnate himself by doing some dodgy magic on a woman who must the magic specifies, have green eyes. Just as our heroines Gracie (Kim Cattrall) and Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) do. The chances of saving them seem bleak protected as he is by stupendous magic powers and a small army of deadly minions, monsters, etc. But a plucky triumvirate of hulking truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), local restaurant owner Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) and the guy who drives the tourist bus (Victor Wong) are determined to defeat him.

This is easily John Carpenter's most ludicrous film, an extraordinary achievement given that Carpenter is the man who gave us `Christine' (demonically possessed car), `Prince of Darkness' (humanity's survival threatened by big jar of Satanic green slime) and `They Live' (man with big muscles defeats vast army of earth-infiltrating evil aliens). It's a film that knows it is ludicrous and is not about to let that stop it enjoying itself. It's tremendous fun, top form Carpenter from the good old days when he made great movies, beautifully paced and executed, with not a single dull moment and just the right balance of action, excitement and wry humour.
