Rating: Summary: The Monet is Not Enough Review: I personally think that the original "Thomas Crown Affair" is weak to begin with. That's why I think remaking this film was a good choice. Why remake a classic (Pyscho)? Hollywood should remake mediocre movies and improve on them even though they will always end up with mixed results. Well, surprisingly enough, this new version does somehow improve on the original. The story changes are more logical, and the characters are actually likeable. The drawback is you feel that McTiernan and the cast are teeter-tottering to keep balance of this cat-and-mouse romance/action film. If you think this film is one of these genres only, you will be disappointed. Overall, they succeed in meshing both genres. Albeit, the two leads are cast in roles they seem to have played before but, you gotta admit, that's what they're good at in the first place! Brosnan's been stuck with stiff upper-class guys like Remington Steele or James Bond and Rene Russo's Catherine Banning seems like her "Lethal Weapon" counterpart with extra fashion flair. Yet they do ignite the screen, and they're over 40, too. That's hard to find in today's cinema. With today's film audience, sophistication can be a bit dull and we would rather yuck up films like "American Pie." "Thomas Crown Affair" is a good example of an old-fashioned caper film with a modern sophisticated, tweak. But heed warning, it is, afterall, a remake.
Rating: Summary: Was my DVD missing some scenes? Review: The only genius in this movie comes from the marketing people. It is marketed in the trailer as a high paced action suspense film. The truth is, all the action sequences are shown in the trailer and never develop into much on the screen. I believe that if your going to make a movie you shouldn't try to sell it as something it isn't. This is a sappy love story that doesn't even qualify as a good date movie. The mind games between these two were entertaining up to the point where Renee Russo does a complete 180 and turns into a limp noodle. This from a woman who came on so strong is an example of the classic result you get when trying to make two movies into one. I wasn't too fond of Entrapment until I saw this movie. Yes, we get to see these two naked in a few love scenes, but even these do not make up for the movies' other shortfalls. Did anyone notice that when the movie was in theaters the only buzz it generated was Renee Russos' nude scenes? It is fair to say that the DVD menu is one of the most original I have ever seen, filled with awesome colors and great scenes from the movie. The colors and scenery in the movie are also outstanding. The soundtrack sounds like it was lifted off the original version and is not in sync with the era the movie is set in. If your a DVD freak you might get this one for the menu alone. Otherwise, wait until it's on HBO free weekend two years from now.
Rating: Summary: Glitz and glamour, but not much really interesting. Review: Ok, I liked the movie, but I was also annoyed by it. The interactions between Dennis Leary and Rene Russo are fun to watch as are Rene's topless scene's. But I (being Joe Average) was incredibly annoyed by the unadulterated high style life that depicted by Brosnan's character, and his willingness to throw the whole thing down the tubes to (maybe) find a loving partner. Further I'm annoyed that a movie annoys me. Beautiful people, in beautiful places, with and annoying story.
Rating: Summary: NOT A BAD AFFAIR Review: "The Thomas Crown Affair" is a worthy remake to the film starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.Just so it's clear, Pierce Brosnan can't touch McQueen in any aspect, but the movie is worthy and sometimes superior in other areas. The movie is directed by one of my favorites(John McTiernan) who directs a pretty entertaining movie and manages to get good performances from his cast. Yes, this does include Pierce Brosnan, who actually shows hints of personality, sense of humor and looks interested in this film. Rene Russo, however, is simply terrific. She looks fabulous in this film(better than in Buddy) and conveys more sexiness in her left leg than most whiny young actresses can come up with in an hour drama. Her permance is also very solid, and while watching her spar with Brosnan, you have to believe that if the two characters were trying to outdo each other in real life, Rene Russo would simply dominate that match. Denis Leary does what he can(although it's good work) with the nothing role of the cop, who's not allowed to solve the case. The movie manages to be a quite entertaining adventure without a single shot being fired, as McTiernan sets up clever heist scenes. Some scenes do run too long, and others shouldn't be in the movie in the first place(we know he's rich I don't have to see him take her for a ride on his plane) Although the ending is weak(that's happening to often nowadays) "The Thomas Crown Affair" is an overall entertaining movie. Rent this and promise never to see Entrapment
Rating: Summary: I wish someone had stolen the show. Review: i have never wanted to walk out on a film until now. i would have had not my wife wanted to see it. i found the premeis of the movie interesting, but it completly failed to grip. after the first 10 minutes the action is over and the rest of the movie is a predictable and dull cat and mouse game that means nothing because it is so predictable. many of the situations are ridiculas and the script is lacking. if you have a desperate need to see this then i recommend watching the original.
Rating: Summary: A Pointless Game Review: Without revealing the ending, Thomas Crown donates one of his own paintings to replace the stolen Monet. Everything that happens after that is pointless. Thomas Crown may be handsome and charming, yet he deliberately makes Catherine jealous to test her and he encourages her to become a fugitive. He does nothing but jerk her around, yet she falls in love with him. I don't know what Catherine saw in Crown or what he saw in her. At first, she dated him just to get the painting back and then she turned into a whiny, weak clinging vine. The sex scene on the marble staircase looked too uncomfortable to be believable. Rene Russo topless on the beach was unnecessary. Faye Dunaway played Crown's psychiatrist, but considering his behavior, she wasn't helping him. Crown mispronounced Lima, Ohio. (It's like the bean, not the city in Peru.) It's possible that Crown wouldn't know this, but Catherine was from there and she didn't correct him. The soundtrack, except for "The Windmills of Your Mind" was intolerable. People have said it was nice to see the over-40 Rene Russo in this sexy role. I've read that the frist choice for this role was Cameron Diaz.
Rating: Summary: simple-minded eye candy Review: Yeah, the action scenes were fantastic and the love scenes sizzled with inventiveness, but the movie as a whole was a desperate disappointment. The major drawback was the complete lack of any wit in the dialog. The characters weren't developed very well--there was a lot of exposure to their lives and lifestyles, but we never REALLY got to see who they were until the very end. Some things seemed to happen for no reason--points or conclusions were derived from what seemed to be inconsequential events. I'm bummed that I got duped into thinking it was a fabulous movie. There was one saving grace, though--at least my boyfriend and I found a film where there were leads for BOTH of us to drool over! ;)
Rating: Summary: Why Did They Remake This? Review: I remember the original and I thought it was a C+ movie but nothing else. This version had good casting and the initial art museum scene was fun. Beyond that, I was bored. It was like a two hour movie of "Lifestyles Of The Rich and Famous" interupted by a few nude scenes of Rene Russo.
Rating: Summary: An affair to remember Review: A great heist movie. Brosnan and Russo have a chemistry rarely seen in movies these days. They are so convincing they actually make you believe that making love on a marble staircase is enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: Sexy, High-Style, & Entertaining! Review: Brosnan & Russo are very hot together in this remake of the original Steve McQueen "...Affair." The plot is essentially unchanged, with new specifics. I found some of the music distracting at times, but overall this is a good remake - well acted, beautiful imagery, & interesting plot. I do think the original is a bit better for overall suspense & style, but this is certainly worth your while.
