Summary: Improvement on Theatrical Release, But Wanting For More
Review: The new DVD relase of Mohicans is an *exceptional* transfer from the original, theatrical release. That is not to say that there aren't problems. A couple of scenes are jumpy, due to the cutting process in the original film. Why these anomalies could not be rectified during the transfer are beyond me, as each frame must be re-registered in order to provide the necessary rock-solid image that we all enjoy from DVD. In any case, I consider this a (very) minor annoyance.

The sound remains quite good, in fact better than VHS in sonic legibility (perhaps this was a result of the ProLogic process, perhaps remixing?) I was a bit disappointed to see that the sound was not encoded in AC-3, but, due to the age of the film, I'm not sure that DD would have added much to the impact of the movie.

Visually and viscerally, the DVD is a marked improvement over the previous release, with substantially improved coverage of some of the sub-plots (Duncan and Cora's initial encounters, Duncan's involvement in the battles of the fort, et al, and especially Magua and the French generals' dialogue, leading to a much better understand of from where and why Magua's hatred emanated). Russel Mean's expanded soliloquy at the end was outstanding. In fact, in revisiting the VHS theatrical release, many of these scenes no longer work and are nonsensical, with chopped dialogue, inappropriately-timed emotional outpourings and inflections -- things just aren't as clear as with the DVD).

I, too, was slightly disappointed that some of the conversational fireworks between Hawkeye and Duncan had been removed, but I was not as affected by the removal of the Clannad portion of the soundtrack as others were. This, coming from a HUGE fan of Clannad! That sole song seemed to out of place in the original release, yet another attempt to insert a well-known modern band into period story without respecting the feeling of the period. I enjoyed the exclusive period music -- it made for a much more immersing and truthful experience, despite the fact that it might cause less copies of the soundtrack to be sold.

Despite the flaws that I (and others) have outlined, I still rate this movie at five stars. It still holds the punch and the raw energy that the original relase held, with a few new and pleasant surprises of its own. Mohicans is still one of the greatest cinematic experiences of the last 30 years, and the newly-released DVD is, overall, simply far better, more consistent, and more intelligent than its antecedents.

Summary: Great Book and Greater Movie
Review: A lot has been written about this story and film. In my opinion it deserves particular credit for perhaps the finest opening sequence in film. The fusion of the soundtrack, cinematography, story setting and execution is without peer. You can see it again and again...

Summary: Great Film!
Review: Are you guys crazy? Are Mohicans and Braveheart based on the same book? Were is the comparison? Last of the Mohicans is an incredible film. The soundtrack is haunting. Daniel Day Lewis is a great actor!

Summary: Great Action Packed Movie
Review: If you know anything about the background of this last novel of a trilogy, you will enjoy this movie. This movie takes the best aspects of a novel that sterotypes Native Americans and turns them into lengendary heros.(*Creative License of course). The way this DVD is cut and filmed it puts a lot of focus on the background that give it a great atmosphereic feel. This is a must for all DVD owners.

Summary: Disappointed! No compare to Braveheart of Mel!
Review: As if watching a normal movie without any sound effects, THX! Where is the awaited for movie! I am so disappointed.

Summary: Magnificent
Review: This movie I liken in some general ways to Braveheart - or perhaps vice-versa. At any rate, it like Braveheart, basically contains many different compelling facets to keep a viewer interested at all moments. Perhaps the first movie to ever move me it is a favorite of mine. An equally tragic, beautiful with a bit more of a realistic approach, I recommend this treasure to all.

Summary: Director's Cut - interesting story expansion
Review: Director Michael Mann's re-edit is an improvement upon the theatrical release. The politics of British/French/Indian relations are more clear. The siege at the fort has been substantively expanded. This version also preserves some of the instrumental music that had been cut up in the theatrical version. There are a couple of jump cuts in the new edit - an unavoidable side-effect of the negative cutting process. The transfer is pretty good, but not fantastic. Color reproduction seems a lot more faithful than the 1994 laserdisc release.

Summary: Director's Cut not the Best Cut
Review: This DVD is a major disappointment. Mann has produced an expanded edit which loses much of the pace and rhythm of the original theatre presentation. Worse, there are several deletions, including the loss of Clannad's "I Will Find You." Hawkeye's "Someday you and I are going to have a serious disagreement" comment to Duncan, on the river after the thrilling ambush, has disappeared. Hawkeye's sarcastic wit, not present in the Leather Stocking books, was a real winner in the movie. Why then remove it. Earlier adverts for the DVD mentioned "Director's commentary." It is a real pity this did not materialise. I would like to have heard more of the building and eventual burial of the fort. Perhaps best to wait for Collectors edition.

Summary: A great movie with a shameful digital transfer
Review: The film, in and of itself, is great sweeping cinema - one of my favorites. The DVD audio is wonderfully rich and aggressive. The visual transfer, however, is, to say the least, a mess. The dark colors are surprisingly poor in many shots - quite distracting. It doesn't take a bitrate meter to tell just how low the transfer rate was in many scenes.
