Summary: Don't use this thing on your computer!
Review: It's a good thing that I'm getting a DVD player this weekend, otherwise I wouldn't be able to watch this great movie that I ran all over town looking for. Every single time I try to play this thing on my DVD-ROM it won't play. My brother-in-law tried it on his laptop and it didn't work there, either. And it's gotta be the disc since all my other DVD's work just fine on my computer. Imagine my disappointment when I sat down to watch this thing and...nothing. Anyways, it's an excellent movie, just don't get it if you've only got a DVD player on your computer, or the only thing you'll be able to use it for is a coaster.

Summary: Well Worth The Wait
Review: I am not here to bore anyone to death with a review on the movie. Most people are aware that the film is a stunning, poetic, and romantic piece of cinema. The only thing I will say, is that I am dissappointed when reading reviews of this film, that credit is never given to the socio-political statements that are contained within, if one reads between the lines. Anyway, this is a review of the format, and not the movie, and as far as DVD goes, this one is well worth the investment. But, allow me first, to tell you all why the DVD only gets four stars, when it could have had five. For one thing, there aren't many features.I look forward to DVD's for there features as well as their quality.I especially enjoy the theatrical trailers. There isn't one.The other criticism I will give is in referance to the replaced scenes that Michael Mann has placed into this version. This is a bit double edged. On one hand, some of them are rather insightful...lending more color to the story, and a little more continuity to the plot. They give more dimension, and perspective. But other scenes are just bland, and cause the film to drag at times. This film didn't drag before the replacement of these scenes, so I can well see why they were deleted. Also,I believe I have noticed that certain scenes have also been deleted from the theatrical version, but they don't seem to be of much consequence. In short, I was happy to have the deleted scenes put back in, but some of them would have done well to have been left out altogether. The original edit seems to move a little less laboriously.Anyway, as a DVD, this movie has one of the nicest pictures I have ever seen.Noticeably free of all those little nasties, and glitches that most DVD's have in their pictures. The blinking and flashing. The "pixel-pixies" and those rather strange, psychedelic effects that are most evident in the leaves of trees, while the camera pans. For this reason, I was a bit weary of this film as a DVD.This movie has a great deal of outdoor footage, and that is the real test of a DVD.I was pleasantly surprised to see this film almost completely free of the "breathing" trees that can make one feel as if they are on LSD.(To see a strong example of this deficiency, check out "Rob Roy" on DVD...it is particularly poor in quality) The sound quality on this disc is impeccable.Cannons booming, muskets popping...it really puts the viewer back in time, right onto a Colonial American battlefield.THX at its best.Couple that with a wonderful story, a gorgeous soundtrack, and powerful performances from a well matched cast, and the result is one of the finest DVD investments available.

Summary: As epic as Dances With Wolves incredible Wholely epic.
Review: Kevin Costner may have made Dances With Wolves , but director Mike Mann's Last Of The Mohicans rivals Dances.Daniel Day Lewis gives a heartfelt performance as the brave Hawkeye. Russel Means gives an incredible and powerful performance as Chingoshgook. And the music is no less than perfect. If you have not seen this on DVD the music to the title is incredible I, swear they probly used every instrument on this epic and powerful film.

In a world war torn by seathing conflict and on the frontier one brave man in the middle who is the last of a dissapearing tribe.Must fight for his destiny and to free his people from constant war.Along the way he befriends a beautiful woman from the opposing side. When he falls madly in love for her he must fight not only for her love but for his tribe as well.

This is a masterpeice and the battle scenes at Fort Willam Henry is impressive and realistic. The Last Of The Mohicans in this version is whole diffrent movie youll understand why mike mann wanted it to be this way.The sound will blow you out of your house when you play it in dolby digital it's also in THX so for those who don't have that kind of sound system can still enjoy the sound. It's an epic modern day classic your sure to want to watch as many times as you can. An amazing and thought prevoking film.

Summary: Albany
Review: I live in Albany (where part of the movie takes place) and I really enjoyed this movie, I brought it into class (even with the gore) and everyone loved it. I really like the action and the music, I also enjoy the "old style" fighting between the English and the French, I was a little specticle about the muskets though... The good guys (dont really know their names) are dead accurate at atleast 150 yards during the battle a Fort William Henry while Muskets during the french-indian war had a range of about 50 yards, however I still think this movie is a must buy.

Summary: A shameful TRAVESTY of the Literary Masterpiece
Review: Why did they call this movie "The Last of Mohicans", when it represents an outrageous travesty of the great novel? They should have named the movie "Tarzan and the Savage Indians". The important theme of interracial romance (written over 100 years ago!) was too taboo for Hollywood, so they white-washed it. The central heroic characters (who are Native Americans in the novel) were reduced to background static. I dare you to actually read the whole novel, before marking my review 'Unhelpful', and then decide for yourself how you feel about Hollywood's wanton, idiotic, greed-driven re-write of great classics.

Summary: Brilliant movie - but regarding the reviews......
Review: I'm not sure which version of what we're all seeing but it seems like the VHS version I have seen is different to every other VHS review I've read. Yes - in my VHS version I got to see the extra guy fall out of the boat; I got to see Chingachkook's (sp?) speech and pretty much everything else everyone says the VHS version lacks. And yes, there was also Clanad's vocal version of the main theme although - and this has always confused me - the main lyric says "No matter where you go my heart is with you" rather than Clanad's "No matter where you go I will find you." Can anyone clear any of this up? Or is my late night tiredness forcing me to misconstrue others' reviews? Regardless, people, see this movie - it WAS brilliant - though very different from the book.

Summary: A Movie that Really Moves
Review: Ever since the first night I saw this film, it has become one of my favourites. Last of the Mohicans is one of those rare pictures that causes the viewer to understand why the film industry came about. It really is the passion, the excitement, the emotion that today we call the movies. Daniel Day Lewis is superb in this film. He brings a raw intensity to the screen that touches the viewer, and keeps them caring. A real feat in movies today. Michael Mann's direction is close to perfect. The end sequence - a montage with no words, or wild screaming, no exploding cars...just the shocking finality of a knife's point, above the sweeping score. Indeed, it is the music that is the real star. One of the few soundtracks that really gets the heart pounding - it stirs the blood and almost haunts you. The acting, the dialogue, the direction, the music, the beautiful cinematography - all these are essential to a great film. The Last of the Mohicans has them in abundance.

The Academy frequently overlook the classics, the movies that are remembered for years to come. This is one of them. One of the greatest...ever.

Summary: Incredible movie, great DVD transfer
Review: After having seen the theatrical release and VHS numerous times, I was pretty anxious to get the DVD transfer. I was not disappointed, they added quite a few new scenes here and there and if you've seen the movie before you'll really appreciate what they add to the film. This being my favorite movie, I'd say the DVD cut only adds to an already great movie and is highly recommended whether you've seen the film yet or not.

Summary: I am thrilled that a directors cut has finally been released
Review: When I first saw the words directors cut I was over joyed that they finally did it. The added scenes make for a better understanding of the story and should never have been cut in the first place, probably the studios work. The lengthened battle scene at the fort is incredible you really get to watch the famous British volley , and the incredible effects it has on some poor French soliders. Oh and this is for the individual who was bashing the battle scenes in the movie, the reason that Hawkeye and his companions seem to always hit their mark is this, they were using rifles and the Hurons and most of the other Indian tribes were using cheap, unreliable (trade muskets) that the french and English traded them, you see there is a big difference in the accuracy. Next time do a little research before you start bashing a film like this. In closing I was pleased with the DVD but a little disappointed that there was'nt as that many extras, no theatrical trailer, cast interviews, production notes and no soundtrack. The amazing power of this movie more than made up for the little drawbacks though,I highly recommend this DVD to all the fans of this movie, its a must.

Summary: Pre-cursor to 'Braveheart'?
Review: After purchasing this movie and seeing it again since it was originally released, I could only conclude that Mel Gibson loved this movie. The visuals provided by the brilliant Dante Spinotti have to be some of the most beautiful ever logged on 35mm. Although some review I read said that Madeline Stowe "lost her accent" at times and was a bad casting decission, I couldn't imagine anyone else in the role. Her passion and beauty are perfect for this film. I'm not saying this film is better than Braveheart, but somethings smack familiar (themes, music, etc.). If you have never seen it, your loss. A modern classic
