Summary: Almost as good as seeing it on the big screen!!!
Review: Since I originally reviewed this movie when it first came out this review will cover the DVD aspects. Plus what else can be said that hasn't been said before about the movie? This has got to be one of the best movies ever produced from a book. After reading the books many times I can safely say I was not one bit disappointed in Peter Jackson's vision.

The DVD has, of course, many benefits. The crystal clear clarity, the sound options, the ability of one to pick scenes to go to. You know, the normal stuff. Where this DVD takes off is the amount of special features. The second disc is 2 hours of special features, from trailors to special reports to the making of the movie to the music video, etc. It also covers the fact that in November they will be releasing the "expanded edition" which adds 30 minutes of cut footage and new music. Since I didn't know that would be available until AFTER I bought this I was a little miffed at first. But then I realized I wasn't going to be able to wait to buy this anyways so it really didn't matter. I have had this DVD for 2 days and have been glued to the tube since.

If you possibly can wait until November then I would recommend purchasing the expanded version. From the decription on Amazon it will be awesome. If you're like me, then what the heck, buy now and buy in November. Peter Jackson will thank you.

Summary: I COULD NOT GET INTO IT
Review: I ONLY READ HALF THE BOOK SO I CANT REALLY COMPARE it to that but i think this movie was just okay. i felt it was one of thos movies were every ten seconds something chasing them or there in some danger after a while the constant danger gets boring.

Summary: WONDERFUL!!!
Review: It is always difficult to translate the Big Screen to the small screen (no matter how good your TV and stereo are) but, in the opinion of this reviewer, the drama of the movie comes across well. Much has been said about the merits of Peter Jackson's adaptation -- and Tolkien fans will be arguing those points for many years to come. But the presentation of this DVD set is just tremendous. The bonus material just whets one's appetite for both the Director's Cut and the next movie.

I have one friend who purchased a DVD player -- just to watch this movie. In my view, this was money very well spent.

Yes, I'll get the expanded set in November -- but this sure is a good start.

Summary: Widescreen please!
Review: The movie is a five star, no doubt about that. But why is the first release of the VHS in full screen only? I don't want to wait until November for a two tape extended version which will be widescreen. If the DVD can be widescreen, why can't the VHS. It is very disappointing to me. Widescreen is the best way to view any movie.

Summary: Where's the Director's Commentary on the DVD?
Review: Really tired of Hollywood pulling this marketing stunt. They did it with Shakespeare in Love, Almost Famous, Traffic, and countless others. I'm boycotting this DVD until the real one comes out in Nov. so I don't have to buy it twice.

Summary: "A few boring stretches, but still worth watching..."
Review: "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" was an okay movie, it was definately worth the [money], but it had a few boring stretches. Like for one, they waste too much time mourning the characters that are supposed to be dead and here they are alive and back on their feet in two seconds. Another thing, I wish they would have shown more of Gollum, but instead all they show are his eyes or his hands, or else they'll show him from the distance but keep his face hidden, and that [stinks]! Now on to the positives. The part where Bilbo asked to see the One Ring again but Frodo declined so Bilbo got this freaky look on his face. I also liked the part with that huge fire demon, but I won't reveal the outcome of the battle because after that the movie goes downhill a ways, but slowly climbs up again. The battle between Gandalf and Sauruman was fairly stupid, two old guys grunting and kickin' the [stuffing] out of each other. And finally, Sauron, the forger of the one ring, looked really cool! He was like a Medieval version of Uber-Jason from "Jason X". And so, "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" was well worth watching, but had a few stupid or boring parts, so I (not strongly, mind you) recommend that you either rent this or watch it at a friend's house first before buying it.

Summary: Great movie, great price.
Review: OK. Serious fans should wait - like I should have. But hey! Its only [money]. The movie is excellent. In some ways it adds life to some characters that the books left flat. It does a better job of pacing than the books, and tells a better story.

Don't get me wrong book lovers, I like the books also. Nothing can substitute for the imagination, but the parts the movie left out and other parts that were expanded upon made for a well rounded movie. For example:

Tom Bombadil: The ring has no effect on him. This kind of takes away from the ring's 'hype' so to speak. Its an all powerfull ring that the entire fate of middle earth hangs upon, but wait here is one guy that it has no effect over. See what I mean, this takes away from the importance of the ring. And the book's explanation as to why Tom couldn't keep the ring...he'd probably forget about it and lose it one day. Good job movie for leaving this part out!

Saruman: The first book didn't give a good enough account about the army he was amassing or what took place between him an Gandalf. And furthermore, you didn't have to wade through one of Gandalf's standard 'I'll tell you what happened there 100 pages from now" speeches.

Songs: None! I always skipped over the indented parts of the books. Songs that went on for pages and pages that didn't contribute anything more that 53 new elven names and or locations that were never mentioned again. But it looks like at least one will be in the Nov. edition.

It's a good movie and DVD, but I'll probably cave and buy the special edition in Nov. also.

Summary: The book is still better but...
Review: This is a great movie. I wasn't surpised that Jackson decided to leave out a few minor characters and the parts where they stop to sing every 150 meters, that gets a little old in the books. The problem with a movie is that it can never equal the readers imagined world. However, it is difficult to imagine any movie ever coming closer than this one.

I thought the special effects were better than the latest star wars installment, especially the balrog and all the tricks they do with Gandalf and the Hobbits height. The theme of the story is well presented in the movie, they don't insult your intelligence with beating you over the head with it 10 times, (Like Fight Club did, but I like that movie too.) They only reason I would give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I am far too picky about movies for my own good and this movie didn't have quite enough of an impact on me to elevate it to 5 star status. I would give it 4 and a half if I could.

Summary: A Fantasy Masterpiece
Review: George Lucas, please take note: this is the way that an epic fantasy film should be made. Brilliant special effects (and in LOTR:TFOTR, they will blow you away) should serve to complement a even more fantastic storyline. As today's cinephile knows, without an interesting script, excellent acting, empathy toward the characters, and a goodly portion of wit and charm, special effects don't mean a thing. LOTR:TFOTR will transport you to another world, and will make you feel at home there...

Please buy this DVD, you won't regret it!

Summary: Breaking of Dreams
Review: When I had heard that The Lord Of the Rings were filmed, I was very impatient of seeing it, as the novel is maybe the best in the 20th century, and Tolkien is surely is one of the most creative human beings of all time. However when I watched this film I was very disappointed. I do not and can not expect the picture to cover all the details of the book, as it would probably should have lasted for 6 hours if it were the case. But I can not understand how a man can dare change the soul of the story and the characters to make it a more marketable in the general public's point of view. Gandalf and Saruman fighting in the tower? Aragorn fighting with 6 ringwraiths at a time? Bilbo Baggins almost attacking Frodo for the ring? Arwen saving Aragorn and Frodo in the forest after a horse chasing with the ringwraiths? Why should LOTR need Liv Tyler as savior. I strongly protest Peter Jackson for being courageous enough to alter the novel to change its inspiring and magical atmosphere into a marketable and cash producing media product. I do not care about the costumes and special effects as I had seen better and as anybody with the big budget can have them nowadays. If you want special effects, watch The Matrix. So I give 5 stars for LOTR but only 2 stars for Peter Jackson only for performance of some actors and the scene for Mines of Moria. Now everybody knows LOTR with the help of movie, but in a deviated and marketable point of view.
