Summary: A great min-series that stays true to the book.
Review: I first read The Winds of War by Herman Wouk back around 1972. The book just absolutely grabbed me. When I heard that ABC was filming a mini-series I was a little skeptical. Very few "made for TV" movies from books really capture the true feel of the original work. THIS ONE DOES! First of all it has a great cast. Robert Mitchum was just awsome as Comander Pug Henry. Both Jan Michael Vincent and Ali McGraw were credable as older actors playing young adults. Polly Bergen, John Houseman, and Peter Graves round out an exceptional cast. The fictional account of a family caught up within historical events continues to draw my attention, even though I have watch this many times since it originally came out. Some of the many highlights include the special effects of the bombing of London, the Japanesse attack on Pearl Harbor, and the wonderful re-creation of Roosevelt, Churchill, and Hitler by Ralph Bellamy and crew. In comparing this series to War and Remembrance, which was the sequal in both book and mini-series, I would have to give the nod to this as the better. If you're looking for an accurate and riviting account of the early years of WW II, then grab this up. Yes, the cost is high but it's well worth it.

Summary: Good, but could have been much better quality
Review: I give the miniseries itself a full 5 stars (well-deserved), but I cannot give this dvd set a good rating, and here's why:
1. silent, unimaginative menus, and original full frame.
2. Dual mono (like it matters!)
3. Awful transfer, sometimes very grainy. Mostly average.
4. "Extras" are actually just one interview broken up into 4, about an hour or so in total. 17 minutes here, 13 there... you get the idea.
5. Bare bones set. Forget easter eggs, 5.1 audio. Disappointing.
In summary, how can you NOT buy this set? We've been waiting for it for over 20 years! But they really didn't give it much effort. They certainly should have, since this is THE best miniseries ever. Paid the 50+ bucks. Guess we are lucky to get this on dvd in any condition we can (that must be how the distributor is thinking...)

Summary: At long last!
Review: I have been waiting over ten years to own "The Winds of War." After receiving my copy (on the day it was released no less), I immediately began looking at the special features and such. They are very excellent, providing a lot of behind-the-scenes perspective regarding the production. The movie itself has been digitally mastered and the sound has been remixed. On DVD this movie looks and sounds so much better then it did on VHS! It is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in history, World War II, or family drama.

Review: I have been waiting years for The Winds Of War to come out on DVD, and am very happy that it is finally released. When I was younger (10 years old when it was first diffused on tv), I became hooked on it's story, it's accuracy and detail on the main events on the second world war, and the relations and hardships of the characters involved. This for me was as much a history lesson (normally history at school is boring, this however was enlightening and disturbing at times) as an adventure story.
The memeory of this film brought me eventually to reading the novel along with it's sequel, War and Rememberance. Like most well written books, the novel is even better than the films. I have, sadly, never seen the W&R mini-series.
When the The Winds of War was re-diffused a few years later on tv, I was again hooked, even though it was scheduled for 1am in the morning once a week.I have, for this moment not bought the DVD. Let me explain. I live in Europe, and although I have the capability to view the Zone 1 DVD with my computer, I would rather wait. I myself am English. But I live in France since 5 years, and I would really be happy if someone could let me know if both DVD Mini-series will soon be released in Europe, and if so, will they be available with the french translation. I would dearly love to show these pieces of excellences to my wife, who does not speak English, and also to my little girl when she is a bit older. PLEASE HELP SOMEONE, THESE DVD'S ARE NOT TO BE MISSED

Summary: Winds Of War
Review: I have read the book several times and each time I find that I missed something the last time i read it. It is one of the most complex and complete works that I have ever read. This work and its companion "War And Rememberance" are several books and different parts and looks at the overall subject matter all rolled into one. I still have a copy my son copied from the tv series around 1989 and I still watch it. I can only think of the Bible as more complex and more telling of people.

Review: I have watch this series on TV about 6 years ago.It fascinated me immediately.After then I read the novel of Herman wouks,I just found Robert Mitchum is not the same as my imagination of henry in the book.But I feel the performance of Mr.Mitchum made up the little flaw.
why the studio still not release this and "war and remembrance"on DVD!

Review: I read the novel "the winds of the war" some years ago. Recently I borrowed its video from a friend. I could hardly wait to enjoy it. I like the Henry men. But as I watched the tape, I felt somewhat disappointed. Victor Henry, I am sorry to say, is too old. and Natalie is not what I had imagined. She looks too soft, not tough enough. However the story is really touching. I feel great pity for Rhoda, who could not cherish her husband's love. I admire Natalie's courage to face all those terrible happenings. And I would like to enjoy it again if I have another chance.

Summary: Good series; Ali MacGraw pitfiful
Review: I really liked the series, but the cast from War and Remembrance was so much better. Ali Macgraw was so annoying as Natalie Henry. Most of all, Ali Macgrew as about 10 years too old to be playing the 30ish Natalie Jastrow. Who else agrees? And Jan Michael Vincent was 10 years too old to be playing 22 year old Byron Henry.
