In IBM IMS Essentials Part 1: Database Manager, you are introduced to the IMS Database Manager. IMS hierarchical databases are covered, and the Data Language/I (DL/I) function codes used to query and update the databases within application programs. You are introduced to database change logging and the various database recovery utilities used in IMS. Finally, you learn about IMS hierarchic access methods and about optimizing DL/I access methods. This course is current to IMS v.8, but generally applicable to v.7 and beyond.

Learners should be able to describe the fundamentals of data processing, including the function of operating systems, access methods and Job Control Language (JCL). These skills can be obtained from on-the-job experience.
