LAN/WAN Integration is designed to explain internetworking between LANs, as well as LANs with WANs. Students will learn about networking services, protocols, architectures and technologies, and will provide new insight into the methods of integrating LANs with WANs. Additionally, this course will cover connectivity hardware devices such as bridges, routers, and switches.

Unit 1: Network Services 3 hours

* Identify the characteristics of the NetBIOS communication method. * Match the layers in the OSI model with their functions. * Identify features of the TCP/IP)suite. * Identify the features of the Internet packet exchange/sequenced packet exchange (IPX/SPX) protocol suite. * Match types of transmission media with their characteristics. * Differentiate between the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) and Token Passing media access protocols. * Identify the features of Ethernet. * Identify the features of Token Ring. * Identify characteristics of Fiber Channel technology. * Identify features of common local loop technologies. * Differentiate between the Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) high-speed technologies. * Differentiate between the features of repeaters, bridges, and routers as network connectivity devices. * Differentiate between local bridge and remote bridge network connectivity devices. * Sequence the steps used by the Spanning-Tree Protocol to eliminate transparent bridging loops. * Identify the functions of gateways.

Unit 3: LAN-WAN Connectivity 2 hours

* Match WAN technologies with their functions. * Identify administrative tasks for managing Remote Access Services (RAS). * Differentiate between the features of static routing and dynamic routing. * Differentiate between the functions of major TCP/IP routing protocols. * Identify advantages of terminal emulation. * Sequence the steps to establish a Telnet remote login session. * Transfer a file by using anonymous File Transfer Protocol (FTP). * Identify features of client/server communication between the host and network workstations. * Identify features of common e-mail services. * Match domains of standard Internet naming schemes with the group they represent. * Identify features of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). * Match the components of a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)-managed network with their functions. * Identify features of Network Management Applications. * Identify features of IBM's System Network Architecture (SNA).
