Rating: Summary: Ethernet Part 2: Ethernet Bridging and Switching Training CD Review: Course Overview
This is the second course in a three part series that introduces Ethernet Bridging and Switching. Students will learn the fundamental concepts required to understand transparent bridging operation. This course also includes an in-depth look at the Spanning Tree Protocol. The Ethernet Switching portion of this course covers the fundamental concepts required to understand switching and its benefits over shared and bridged Ethernet. Specific concepts covered include switching and how it compares to bridging, as well as an in-depth look at Virtual LANs and Trunking.
Learn To
* Identify the advantages of Ethernet bridging, the various types of bridges, and the bridging processes.
* Identify Ethernet switching.
* Identify how to configure duplex mode and troubleshoot Ethernet errors.
* Identify the working of an STP operation and causes of STP operation failure.
* Identify VLAN concepts.
* Identify trunking modes and VTP concepts.
Audience
The audience for this course includes technical managers, system administrators, and system analysts. Students should have knowledge of computers and basic networking concepts. In addition, students should have taken the first part of this series (13927).

Objectives
Unit 1: Ethernet Connectivity 3 hours
* Identify the scenario in which a bridged Ethernet network should be used. * Identify the bridging processes that occur on a specified bridge. * Match the types of bridges with the situations in which they are used. * Identify the features of a switch that are applicable in a specified situation. * Match switching modes with the situations in which they are used. * Identify the type of switch architecture that has the specified characteristics. * Identify the switch that should be used in a specified scenario. * Evaluate a switched Ethernet network for a business scenario. * Match the duplex modes with the devices on which these should be configured. * Configure a duplex mode for a network adapter on a Windows 2000 server by using the shortcut menu. * Identify the causes of an Ethernet error in a specified situation. * Identify the troubleshooting tool that can be used in the specified scenario.
Unit 2: STP and VLANs 4 hours
* Identify a network design that is susceptible to loops. * Identify the elements of an STP operation in a specified situation. * Complete a diagram that represents an STP operation. * Identify the causes of STP operation failure in a specified situation. * Identify the situation in which a particular BPDU is generated. * Identify the network component that is used to provide fast STP convergence. * Identify the advantages of a VLAN in a specific situation. * Match the types of VLANs with the situations in which they are used. * Identify the DISL-enabled network diagram in which a trunk is established. * Identify the steps involved in configuring VTP in a specified situation. * Identify the trunk ports in a VTP domain on which a specific VLAN can be pruned. * Match the type of VTP message with the situation in which it is transmitted. * Complete the steps to configure a VLAN. * Design a VLAN that satisfies the requirements of an organization.
