Review: I've used Turbo Tax for years and years. On floppies. Under DOS. I stupidly installed it and got product activation this year. There is no reason at all to put up with this, when one can buy Tax Cut instead. Be warned.

Summary: Incompetent technical support
Review: The software insisted that I own a business, and would not let me select otherwise. I contacted their technical support via live chat (I will NOT pay for telephone support over a problem in THEIR product). I had to tell the tech exactly what the problem was 3 TIMES (he kept asking). Finally, I was switched to another rep, and had to go through the same mess again. This person told me to try some steps. While I was doing that, he/she ENDED THE CHAT SESSION! No warning, just dropped it. Turned out the steps I was given did not solve the problem, and I had to re-contact them and tell the story yet again.Poor communication, not paying attention to what I say, and they never did resolve the problem. I had to work around it for myself. If you buy TurboTax, be warned: if you need technical support, you're better off on your own.

Summary: Does what it is supposed to do (and BETTER than TaxCut)
Review: I purchased TaxCut after reading all of the bad reviews here. I am sorry I did. TaxCut would not update, it has an inferior user interface and it did not figure the best rebate for me on my taxes. I then purchased TurboTax and it automatically figured my taxes with no errors. It even advised me to get an IRA for my wife which turned a several hundred dollar tax bill into a tax refund. It also automatically handled the hard to understand Montana state tax rules which TaxCut did not. Forget the license issues. You CAN run the software on multiple machines (you can only print from the 1st one). You CAN use this software in the future. Intuit's website points out that after Oct 23, 2003 the activation will no longer be required so if you ever need to reinstall because of an audit, YOU CAN DO SO! Buy it, and get the best refund from the IRS (which is why you would buy this software in the 1st place). After you are done, uninstall it, delete C_dilla, and wait for your IRS refund check.

Summary: Extra work to remove spyware
Review: I had to learn it from the papers (AFTER buying TurboTax), but the fact that I cannot use the office printer (as I usually did in the past years) AND I have to learn how to uninstall spyware makes this product absolutely worthless. Never again.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS
Review: I have used Turbo tax for a number of years, but will never do so again. I installed the program on a spare laptop at work, because of the many difficulties that I had read about from other reviewers about its effects on the machines it was installed on. The program was, despite a flawless connection to the internet, unable to "activate" itself via my internet connection. I don't know why, and I don't really care why. I have no desire to spend a bunch of time trying to figure it out, either. If it requires hours to get the connection working in order to "activate" the software (when my internet access is otherwise not a problem), I might as well fill out my return myself, or pay someone else the 40.00 to do it. One of the most unforgivable things about this "activation" difficulty is that the need for an internet activation is not anywhere mentioned on the box, which states, in full: "Internet connection: 28.8 Kbps or faster modem, or direct internet connection, required to obtain product updates, complete electronic filing, or access online features." Nothing about activation. This is misleading at best...

Review: What was once a great product is now garbage. A company entrusted with such important business (our taxes)
can not operate with no customer support ! Heed my advice do not use this product.
Do your taxes "by hand" You will be glad ! Greed has driven this company to it's demise.

Summary: WIll not import Quicken data
Review: I have used TurboTax happily since 1995. This year changes to frowns. Product activation keeps me tied to my desktop PC. No roaming with the laptop. But the biggest issue is that it does not recognize that Quicken 2000 is installed on my PC, therefore will not let me import its data. Three attempts with 3 different on line chatters at Quicken ended with a recommendation to call the toll phone #, which is now closed. MS Money and TaxCut looking better and better. And I have tried so hard to stay away from the Dark Side....

Summary: Non-existent customer support!!!
Review: I purchased this product last year and liked it. This year, Intuit sent me a special promotion to buy it early and it would be sent directly to me when I wanted it. I thought, "Great!" Also, if I want a CD with the state program (instead of downloading from the their internet site, it was extra. I opted for paying extra for the state CD. They sent me a confirmation with the wrong state! I wrote them several times to fix-it! They kept referring me to their website and telling me how easy it would be to fix-it. Tried doing that several times. Didn't work! Tried calling them. Nothing! Finally, they told me they fixed it. But they wanted me to pay a second time. I paid again because I didn't want to deal with any more of the hassle. I GOT ANOTHER COPY OF THE WRONG STATE SOFTWARE! I spent more time dealing with Intuit than I did using the software. In the end, I paid twice as much for the software, had to download off their website the state software anyway and had a headache. Next year, I'm going to look at different software.

Summary: Activation Woes
Review: I have been a Turbo Tax user for many years, but this is my last year. We simply cannot get it to run reliably. It appears that some aspect of their activation key is stored in your disk's boot sector. This has caused trouble with our disk management software (Maxtor Max Blast with dynamic drive overlay by OnTrack), which also wants to be in the boot sector. After installing Turbo Tax and shutting down the PC, the next time we started up the PC we could not access our C:\ drive any more. After fixing this problem, we could not activate Turbo Tax anymore because it said we had installed it on another PC (not realizing that it was the same PC). We got in touch with TurboTax support and they gave us a new key. They said they didn't understand why we were having the problem. We installed the new key and ran Turbo Tax for a while, then exited and shutdown the PC. The next time we booted the PC, the same thing happened with the C:\ drive and the Turbo Tax activation. TurboTax support said we can only get one more key and recommended that we reformat the hard drive (!!!) or buy a new PC (!!!!) The attitude seems to be that we are either crazy or are software pirates. We're not pirates -- we're just trying to compute our taxes with a minimum of hassle. Suffice it to say that we are now going to kiss TurboTax goodbye and buy Tax Cut from now on. Turbo Tax's new license monitor controls don't even make good business sense! -- Here they have a product that has to be repurchased every year, so they are ensured a steady flow of revenue every year as long as they can keep their customer base happy. By putting in these intrusive activation algorithms, they are running a huge risk of alienating their customer base, all in the hopes of foiling some unknown number of software pirates. It is hard to believe that the revenue lost to the pirates can be more than what they are losing by the defection of their (formerly) loyal customers! Steer clear of Turbo Tax 2002!

Summary: AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Review: Intuit is way too smug. They assume that since they've been around the longest, that they can arrogantly do whatever they want including enforcing product activation for a program that you use ONCE in your lifetime (each product is only good for the one year that you buy it), trying to cross-sell you for an expensive upgrade at every turn as you get "interviewed", and forcing you to send in THREE, I repeat, THREE separate rebate forms to THREE separate addresses instead of simply charging a fair price for their product. I've used Quicken since the DOS days and will NOT use TurboTax again.
