Summary: Absolutely the BEST tax preparation software available!
Review: Is there ANY other way to prepare your taxes quickly, accurately, and easily? I don't think so. I've been using this product line from the beginning.

Use Quicken and make full use of categorized transactions and you'll have your 1040 and supporting schedules completed before that mp3 finishes downloading.

Summary: Thought it was great, but very disappointed in results!!!
Review: My fiance and I used Turbo Tax to submit our Federal and multiple state returns for 2001. It was very easy to use and we were happy with the results when we sent them in. However, we were not happy that Turbo Tax had messed up our returns! Even though we attempted to download all the updates that it constantly requests you to do (this is very annoying if your internet connection is slow, especially and because the website was always busy and wouldn't let me download anyway). Either way, we were lucky that the IRS corrected the amount due for us, we were due a much larger refund it turned out! After seeing the problem it made us very nervous about all of our forms, but it was too late. I would not trust this product to correctly submit my tax forms again nor to receive the highest refund (seeing as it couldn't manage that). The ridiculous thing was that it was a very simple error but it caused a ripple effect by not giving us credit for the change in income tax rates that occured during 2001.

Summary: Another Rebate Tickle Scam
Review: Over Priced, banking on people not sending in rebate. For a financial program that brags about saving you money, whats up with giving them money upfront just to have them save it, earn interest on it, then mail it back after 2 to 6 months. Have to trust that downloading will work. Charges almost 6 dollars if you want a CD copy. If your puter crashes within the year and it's lost you have no program. Too big unless you burn a CD backup. And then wait till you get audited !!! No program, just a big smile for the tax man when he comes.

Summary: Beware of Home Equity Loans & the AMT
Review: This is a great tax prep product (I have not tried other s/w, so my opinion may not mean much to you). I did have one problem w/ the tax-year 2000 version: we got a home equity loan and used the proceeds to purchase a car. TT did not ask me what each mortgage interest amount was for. Taxpayers must complete Form 6251 (which determines whether or not AMT must be paid) if they deduct mort. interest in which the loan proceeds are used for something other than a house. As result, my return did not have this form. In 2001 I saw this error but (I think ?) I'm ok b/c the tax amounts (rebate) did not change when I used Form 6251.

Summary: The only way to do your taxes!
Review: This is my fourth year using Quicken TurboTax and it will be my second year using the state tax version. I'm sold on it. I can't imagine going back to pen and paper to do taxes. The program takes you step-by-step through the tax process by asking you questions about the various sections of the forms. It also prompts you to make you remember about things that may have slipped you mind, like other deductions. And, it makes suggestions for deductions that you may not have thought about. At the end of the process you can print out the forms for mailing in the traditional format or in a format that's easy for the IRS computers to read. In addition, you can opt to file electronicly. The help section IS very helpful. It actually makes sense of the rules and instructions for filing your taxes and explains the relevant sections of the tax code in easy to understand language. My one suggestion is that you have all your papers with you before you start the process. You can, of course, save your work and come back to finish or edit it, but it is a pain to be half way through and remember that your mortgage statement is two floors away.

My advice: Don't do your taxes without it.

Summary: Expatriates listen up: eeeeeeasy 2555 and 1116!!!
Review: This is the ONLY tax package that I found capable of doing
international (expatriate) assignments and the correlating
foreign earned income Form 2555 and foreign tax credit Form 1116
properly. As well as AMT!!!

All this at a fraction of cost of what "international tax advisors" charge...

The interview mode is not full of jargon and can be understood by the non native "taxaleese speaker" as well...

Either way: worth its price!

Summary: Nothing's error-poof
Review: Turbo Tax is a great program, but it does have a error in it.It has to do with the rate reduction tax.It will ask if the taxpayer received tax rebate check, then the amount. When it is inputted in ,it recaluates to a rate reduction credit, and is put on your 1040 LINE 47 OF THE LONG FORM.In reality it should have not ask this question. The tax rebate checks are tax free and the tax payer should not have been bother with this questions.Line 47 should be checked and nothing should be entered.you should still know your basics when it comes to CREDITS and DEDUCTIONS.

Summary: Run Away!!!!!
Review: Turbo-Tax is great - if your taxes are very, very simple and don't stray much from the middle of the road. If you have any kind of funky investments then you are playing with fire. The really bad thing is, with this program, you'll never know if you've crossed the line. Even worse, sometimes Turbo-Tax might cheat you out of a larger tax return...

It's not that I found anything wrong or hard to use about Turbo-Tax, it's the same great program that Quicken is. No, it's just too similiar to a home-improvement project - you can really mess something up and never know it. There isn't a human being there to double-check your forms, tell you what you are doing and why. You can mistakenly go in the wrong direction and not even know it. The Turbo-Tax folks will certainly tell you that tax forms are nothing to be scared about, and they are right - most peoples' taxes are so simple that you don't even need Turbo-Tax to file them.

I pay an accountant to do my taxes, not just to protect myself, but to also learn from him, and discover how I might better spend my money and not send it to the government. That is where I've REALLY saved money, not from [what I spend]on tax software. Sorry I didn't talk too much about the software, but I felt the use I got out of it last year was more important to communicate.

Summary: Bigger refund ...
Review: TurboTax does everything for you and won't let you do anything illegal, quadruple checks your figures, and means the difference in a small or large tax return (buy the software and get a large return).

Anybody that complains about the software doesn't understand its intended purpose (it's designed for the average Joe; said Joe being the one that can't afford a corporate tax lawyer).
