Summary: Not worth the money
Review: I purchased TurboTax because I did it every year. Before I started working on my tax return, I checked for updates. I have a dial up Internet connection, and it took me an hour to get all the updates. Then I started to work on my return, and accidentally selected the wrong answer under Education Credits. I didn't realize the mistake until the Error Check at the end. I tried to go back and corrected, and it didn't work. I tried 7 times, and finally decided to talk to Technical Support. To talk to them, it costs you about $15 for 10 minutes, or online chat for free until April 15th. So I go for chat, explain the guy what the problem is. His answer was repetition of the steps to go back and change the answer. When I told him that I already did that 7 times, his answer was "Well, it's working on my computer." What kind of answer is that??? The guy just didn;t care! After 30 minutes, I gave up. The solution to my problem: START THE RETURN ALL OVER FROM THE BEGINNING!
Next year I will try HRBlock. Turbo Tax is not worth the money, and I have nothing to lose.

Summary: WSJ's very negative review of TurboTax
Review: I strongly concur with the many negative comments from other experienced TurboTax users. For an intelligent and objective comparison with its primary competitor TaxCut, read Walt Mossberg's Wall Street Journal (1/30/03) product review. ... Mossberg hates what Intuit did to TurboTax! And you will too. Don't buy it. Send a message to the software industry that such outrageous "big brother" business practices are absolutely unacceptable.

Summary: No problems for me
Review: I was made very anxious by all the negative reviews, but I went ahead and bought Turbo Tax because I've used it before and I also use QuickBooks for my business. It works just fine for me. I have an always-on cable connection, so the registration took place during installation. There is no spyware recognized by Ad-Aware.

Summary: Think twice before buying Turbotax
Review: I'm unable to use Turbotax due to limitation to number of forms of W2G it allows. The limit is 30. Talked to customer support there and all they told me is to return the software. Now I have to buy the TaxCut (it supports 250 copies of any form) and retype all the information. I strongly advice you not to buy Turbotax - they will do nothing to help you if you hit one of their limitations. They do not care at all that I have been their customer for at least 10 years.

Summary: I'm Done With Turbo Tax
Review: I've been using Turbo Tax since the second year it was available and long before it was purchased by Intuit. I am also a long time Quicken and Quickbooks user. This will be the last year I will purchase any Intuit product because of the product activation policy. The new policy allows you to install Turbo Tax on one computer, one time only. In my case, I first installed it on my notebook, then decided that preparing taxes on a notebook keyboard is not a good idea. When I tried to install the product on my desktop and uninstall it on my desktop PC, product activation told me I could not install a fully working product on my desktop unless I paid for the product again. I called tech support and asked for help and was told that the policy only allows one installation on one PC, no exceptions. That is unacceptable. No matter how well Turbo Tax helps prepare taxes, Intuit's new policy makes this an unacceptable product. Avoid it at all costs and show Intuit what you think of their new policy.

Summary: Used to use Turbo-Tax, but now it's too Dangerous
Review: I've been using Turbo-Tax Home & Business in the past,
but changes to the program for 2002 render it too
dangerous to continue its use for myself and most
others.

If you ever need to file an amended return and you've
put in a new hard drive or replaced your computer, you
can't do it. They now require on-line or telephone activation
and the activation is locked to the PC it's installed on.

I routinely need to do amended returns a year or two down
the road, and it is entirely possible that I will have
changed computers by then.

Intuit will get no more of my money. I'm switching from
Turbo-Tax to Kiplinger's Tax Cut, and from Quicken to
Microsoft Money.

Summary: Terrible product, crippled with "activation"
Review: I've been using TurboTax for the last several years. It imports data from my Quicken program so most of the tax data is done without having to enter much information at all. You do have to check everything though, since everyone's situation is different. If your data in Quicken is mis-labeled you could be in trouble. The program does check calculations, but if you've haven't entered the data properly, you could either lose money to the government or end up with free room and board for a while. I haven't used any other tax programs, I guess because I like this well enough to stay with it. I do find the "video" annoying and dislike the pitch for upgrades every time you update the program, but the cost is reasonable and I do like the State Tax section. Massachusetts tax laws are bizarre and this program works right though them. Makes paying taxes less of a chore...and always remember "Taxes are the price we pay for Civilization".

Summary: Lousy activation.
Review: I've bought this product for quite a few years and used it without problems until now.
For 2002 returns the product must be activated. This was simple enough via the Internet. I did this about 4 weeks back and left the program until yesterday. To my dismay on attempting to use TurboTax recently I found that it was no longer activated. My attempt to come up with an active version using a disk image was unsuccessful. Luckily I hadn't entered any data.
C-dilla is the activation program used and it is not removed by uninstalling Turbotax....
Unfortunately I didn't save my receipt so no refund.
Goodbye Turbotax, hello TaxCut.

Summary: They've lost a customer.
Review: I've filed my returns using TurboTax since 1998. This year, I hesitated after hearing about the c-dilla controversy, but decided to stick with a proven product.

After installing the software and partially completing my return, my Norton Internet Security firewall would not allow me to access any web sites. I contacted Intuit's online chat customer service, after disabling my firewall. The service agent, who was at least polite, could offer me nothing better than "Turbotax is not compatible with firewalls." I tried to explain several times that it didn't matter whether the product was running or not: Ever since I installed Turbotax my firewall blocked all internet traffic. Nothing got through. I followed their instructions to uninstall the product, but balked when told to restart my computer in safe mode and install the software again. I couldn't get an answer to why that would help me, so I gave up. I tried the online chat again in hopes of finding another, more knowledgeable agent. No dice. When I tried to escalate to a manager, the agent signed me off. After another escalation attempt, the online help finally gave me a PIN number to use when I called their long distance help line. The agent on the help line could only recommend I call Symantec.

Because we rely on internet access for researching homework problems, I uninstalled and then reinstalled my firewall so that my computer could access the internet.

A day later, after cooling off, I contacted the for-charge help line again, and got another agent to help me. She told me to stop my firewall and antivirus, then install TurboTax. Since I did that, I've been able to run TurboTax and my firewall concurrently.

The whole series of events makes me wonder what I get for paying Intuit over [$$$]. Their help system stinks, and their arrogance regarding software licensing controls has made their product suspect in my mind. By forcing me to fool around with my firewall installation, they've put me in a very uncomfortable position.

I guess I'll complete my return and then fully uninstall Turbotax and my firewall, then install the firewall again. I'll probably start using TaxCut next year.
