Summary: Product Activation not reliable
Review: After installing Turbo Tax Delux the activation would only work
until I rebooted the system. After a reboot Turbo Tax would
tell me that the software is installed on another system and tell
me I needed to purchase another license. The only help that
Intuit could do was to instruct me to send the program back to the
vendor and get another copy. I went through this cycle 3 times
before sending the software back to Intuit for a refund via there
money back policy. I will never buy this software again and I am
glad there competers don't have this product activation bug.

Summary: Product Activation denies your rights as a consumer
Review: All the TurboTax products for 2002 require product activation to lock that license to a single PC. Their license agreement also states that they may discontinue any aspect of the service at any time. This draconian measure may stop a few people from sharing their license with family members - but it will also prevent legitimate users from accessing their data. If you use TurboTax, and then get audited within 7 years, you probably won't be able to reprint or modify your tax return - since it is likely that you'll be using a different PC by that time. You won't be able to activate TurboTax on the new PC without repurchasing the software.Historically, copy protection schemes have caused more problems for legitimate users than for pirates. Consumers need to stand up for their rights and refuse to purchase software with Product Activation.

Summary: Frustrating and Futile
Review: Buying this software turned out to be frustrating, and eventually fruitless.
First, I had difficulty getting the software to recognize my DSL connection. After contacting the help-desk I was finally able to get registered and on-line.
While inputing the data,the software referred me the internet several times. In each case, the program locked up and I had to restart. Eventually I completed the Federal form only to find an error in the Tuition Deduction portion. The software indicated that I needed to downlod the latest file from the website. Once I did this, the program once again locked up and I had to restart (again).
After restart, when trying to start Turbotax, all I got was an "illegal operation message" and I was not able to open the program at all.
Eventually, I gave up and uninstalled the program.
To add insult to injury, when I logged to the website and tried to fill out the "request a refund" form, it indicated that it was going to transfer me to another website. However, the link would not work and I was unable to request the refund.
I am really disappointed with this product and with the poor setup of the on-line services.

Summary: Consider an alternative
Review: Even though Turbo Tax has been my choice in the past for both my Dad (a CPA) and I, we are both picking another software maker or filing online this year. First of all, TurboTax 2001 made you upgrade to IE 5.5, which not only was unwelcome in general but IE 5.5 at the time was not the most reliable browser available, especially on the security end. Now this year - and in the future - you lose functionality if you try move YOUR SOFTWARE from one machine to another, even if you are upgrading. Consider almost any other add-on product that can be transfered from one device to another and you will not find user agreements anywhere close to Turbo Tax. For shame Intuit!

Summary: I returned my copy
Review: I bought a copy of Turbotax Home and Business for my desktop PC while I had a new laptop on order. Called Turbotax support (waited forever), they told me I had to purchase 2 licenses - one for the old machine, one for the new laptop (since I was replacing the desktop with the laptop). I returned the software and bought TaxCut for [much] less. So far, it seems to be an outstanding product. The transfer between machines was simple. I appreciate the need for software rights protection, but I refuse to pay double licensing fees to help Intuit fight the bad guys. It was a great 10 years with TurboTax, but now I'm a TaxCut customer.

Summary: Intuit Activation Scheme - BRILLIANT Strategy!!!
Review: I bought TurboTax 2002 Home & Business. It said it needed some type of phone activation as I will NEVER activate online and give Intuit free access to ALL the sensitive data on my PC... They say they will not "look" but how can you trust an outfit that hasa an answering machine on the weekend during tax season... Well, here is my story: I called Intuit on a Saturday, they had an answering machine (like a mom and pop shop) saying they wsre closed on weekends. I called again on Monday.... I was kept on hold for 45 minutes.... so I got irritated and hung up.... I tried calling again on Tuesday, I was placed on hold for 30 minutes... So I hung up... That's it!! I am returning TurboTax and getting my money back... NOTHING is worth such aggravation. Two hours of my time are worth $. What is the story with this annoying activation scheme? All Intuit did was add more pressure on their staff who are wasting time activating (if someone can get through) instead of providing tech support or selling. Also, at a minimumn, Intuit lost $$ that they could have gotten from me... Very smart indeed...

Review: I can only echo what other reviewers have said. The program has glitches. The copy protection is so draconian that it will cause problems down the road. Do yourself a favor and buy a different, more user friendly product.

Review: I guess Intuit got enough complaints on product activation, as they sent me the following: Dear Valued Customer: In response to your comments on the implementation of product activation technology in tax year 2002 TurboTax(R) software, I wanted to let you know that Intuit will discontinue product activation in next year's TurboTax desktop products purchased at retail or direct from Intuit. We are absolutely committed to listening and learning from our customers. We clearly need to better understand all of our customers' tax preparation needs and how they use TurboTax. While we remain committed to protecting our intellectual property, going forward, we will only introduce digital rights management technologies that maximize customer experience and preserve customer satisfaction. Summary: Intuit stepped in it
Review: I had pre-ordered TurboTax premier, knowing that some sort of product activation would be required. I had no idea that this activation would involve third-party software that I could not remove from my computer, short of a low-level format of my hard drive. I am returning TurboTax for a refund, as I still fall within the 60 day return period. I will try TaxCut this year.

Summary: Intuit alienates long-time clients
Review: I have been a longtime Intuit product user. I have used Quicken (many versions, both Mac and PC) and Turbotax (also the Macintax version). Up until recently, I thought Intuit products were unsurpassed in quality and service. That has since changed. I just made the mistake of purchasing Turbotax Home and Business. After some difficulty registering, I was finally able to get the product registered. I had some trepidation given the only "1 Computer" business in the registration guidelines, but understood the copy protections concerns. I was concerned about what happens if I have to swap out my computer or hard drive, which has happened before, as hardware problems do occur. I installed anyway. I was having some difficulty with my other software and CD-R drive I also utilize, so looked at the task manager for clues. I saw a new process running "CDAC11BA.exe", which is always cause for investigation. After searching the web, I find this is a program that Intuit is installing which "guards" their software from copying.... I was appalled at the audacity of Intuit doing this. In addition to the issue of fair use rights, Intuit has essentially decided to steal my processor cycles and my memory for its own purposes. Despite the many wonderful features offered by Intuit, this will be my last purchase of their software as long as this [program] (or similar [program]) is present.
