Summary: Quicken & Money have matured--so be realistic
Review: I have recently tried Money 2002 but still decided to stick with Quicken, which I have used since 2000. In fact, I have upgraded it to 2002. I would like to make a few comments. First off, while I agree with many reviewers here that there aren't that many new features which make it a must-upgrade, I still like the enhancements Quicken has added over the last two years. Needless to say, there is still room for improvement for Quicken (and Money as well), but I think money management products as such have matured to the the point where you can't expect too much from their newer versions. So, be realistic and fair when it comes to evaluating them.
Second, I don't have the problems people here reported with the newer versions. Quicken 2002 successfully converted all my data files, and there are no lock-ups or anything. I think the problems have more to do with Windows than Quicken. My advise is to keep your Windows lean and mean. I am using Windows 98 and I only install programs that I really need to use.
Finally, as to whether Money or Quicken is better, it's pretty much up for grabs. If you are a beginning user, Money may be the better choice. However, I don't see any reason to switch if you are already using Quicken. Besides, more financial sites support Quicken than Money, and there is no such thing as seamless conversion. I tried that with Money, and I had a lot of clean-up work to do.
Conclusion. If you are an existing Quicken user and upgrade with the expectation that it should be a revolutionary makeover, then you will definitely be disappointed. But if you are more realistic, then you will still enjoy the nice enhancements Quicken has made since its 2000 version.

Summary: Please ignore my previous review
Review: I found the problem with the Net Worth report and graph in Quciken 2002 was with one credit card account that had some bad data. I download transactions using .qif files and some of the downloaded transactions seemed to cause the problem. I deleted these and the reports and graphs work fine.

This problem occurred immediately upon installing Quicken 2002 over Quicken 2000 so I was sure it was a bug. I guess it could be classified as a moinor bug since 2000 handled the bad date but 2002 does not.

That being said. I do like the options on the net worth graphs that are available in 2002. I have breifly looked at my data in Money 2002 and I did not see that it offered comparable historical tracking of my net worth. I am sticking with Quicken.

Summary: Confessions of a former Quicken fan
Review: I have appreciated and enjoyed Quicken ever since version 1.0. I've spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on upgrades. It has really helped me organize and monitor my finances. I used to be a fanatic Quicken fan--that is, until I purchased Quicken 2002 Deluxe. I found that the program ran much slower than the previous version, the net worth reports and graphs didn't work at all, and I cannot customize reports since I continue to get "Not enough memory to customize reports" error messages. Since I have 512M of RAM and Quicken is the only app open I don't believe this is my problem. I reported a bug for each of these problems and could find no information on the online help. I thought I would try and see if there was some patch or workaround direct from Intuit. Little did I know this was the beginning of the end of my relationship with Intuit.

After some work I found the help numbers which stated there could be a $1.95/minute charge for assistance. However, if the problem was a defect the call would be at no charge. (That's for toll calls--toll free is $1.95/min from the start.) So far, so good. The operator who answered my call took down some information and told me I would need to give her my credit card number before speaking to the product support engineer, and that the engineer would make the determination whether this was a defect and then inform me that the timer was started. A bit leery, I passed along the credit card info and was connected. The engineer asked me if I was aware that a charge could apply to this call--I said yes, only after he started the timer. He then informed me he was starting the timer! You can imagine my frustration went instantly to the boiling point! I immediately told him the program was defective, that I was not going to pay $1.95/minute to help them figure it out, GOOD BYE! I am truly not the kind of person who hangs up on anyone, but with a problem that I believe a defect on their part, it was absolute insult to injury to have to pay for it.

2002 Quicken buyers beware! There may be other issues you have with this program and you will be completely at Intuit's mercy.

I doubt I will ever buy an Intuit product again.

Summary: Great Financial Management Tool
Review: I'm a first time user of Quicken. I have not used any other financial software before. Matter of fact, I needed something desperately to help me manage my finances. I easily downloaded my statements from financial institutions that I bank and invest with. It was great to know that Quicken already had working relationships with these institutions. As a novice to financial software, I found it very easy to use and figure out the functions of each feature. I am able to view all my accounts at a glance. I would recommend this software.

Summary: brain dead user interface
Review: Something is truly brain dead about the web-style user interface in Quicken 2002 Deluxe.

Discovering how to write a check is a major research project.

Menu links appear and disappear as you "browse" through the application.

The impulse to improve the interface was noble, but something went terribly wrong in the execution.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I am a software engineer and am fairly computer literate but I have had significant problems with Quickens UI.

Essentially, I wanted a product to download info from my accounts online, store the data and allow me to oganize it into categories so that I could track my spending and manage my budget. Investment type tools would also be a plus.

I was disappointed. Quicken rarely seems able to download my account data without having to reconcile which is strange as all the data is in the account statement. I tried categorizing the data and that was an exercize in agony. Each time I modified a register transaction it annoyed me with a prompt. Where are the multiple selection windows.

As for investment data. It seems to only be able to do trival charting and I am not sure I trust the results that it returned from the downloaded data. There seemed to be weird outlyers that I had to manually delete.

It also seems that Quicken pushes its website way too much. I payed for a program and I end up having to connect online to
graph multiple stocks at the same time.

So very disappointing. So much so that I will probably try MS Money.

Summary: Satisfied User of Previous Quicken Versions
Review: I have used Quicken from Version 3 and have found it to be the easiest way to manage my home finances. I have yet to purchase Quicken 2002 but I am sure I will in the very near future.
Intended first time purchasers need have no fear, Quicken is the simplest piece of software to both set-up and use.

Summary: One of the most well-written applications I've seen
Review: I've never used any financial applications before this, but I must say I'm impressed with this program. The help system has been able to find virtually every problem I've had. The interface looks very clean, and I find it extremely intuitive. The program has *never* crashed on me once. It does suck up 100% of the CPU after running a 1-step update (to refresh the screen) but that is pretty trivial, and only lasts a few seconds.

I use it to manage my Checking,Savings,Loans,Assets(Car),401k,Stock Options, and ESPP... and all work together in harmony. Downloading the .qif files is pretty dumb, but some accounts support the direct sync to Quicken which is quite nice.

Beware that although you purchase the product and they claim to be able to download your car's value, they have "opted not to continue support for that feature" which basically means they are selling you this feature and then not providing it.
...

Other than that, the product is great. Do yourself a favor... stop supporting Microsoft, and start supporting companies like Intuit that have to fight to compete with them. This product is fantastic.

Summary: Incompetent outsorced customer support
Review: It's amazing how Intuit try to seal themself from customers and their issues. Their outsourced technical support (instantservice.com) was grossly incompetetent in both case I contacted them with my state download issue. Buyer beware: State download will not work through proxy server, or not even with any LAN connection (per technical support).

Summary: Upgrading to the point of uselessness
Review: I've been a Quicken fan for years. My financial institution just forced me to upgrade from Quicken 2000 Deluxe to Quicken 2002 Basic. I loved Quicken 2000 Deluxe, but Quicken 2002 Basic is a slow, slow, slow memory hog that crashes frequently. As with most software providers, Intuit has also made it very inconvenient and costly to get support. Guess I'll hafta move on to MS Money.
