Summary: Decent upgrade but could be better
Review: I wouldn't tell you not to buy this software. It has some nice new features like mileage, Fedex shipping, etc. (Read some of the other reviews) But,I bought it because it was supposed to syncronize contacts with ACT!. Unfortunately and quite puzzlingly, it only seems to support 2 older versions of ACT! (I have the most recent 6.0) I have had to purchase an additional piece of software called ACT! Link 2.0 for Use with QuickBooks in order to exchange data between Quickbooks and Act. It would have been nice if Quickbooks would export pho + email in addition to the address through the export function or to be able to import from a text file and not just an Excel file. Either would have made the buying of the additional software not necessary. And needless to say the ACT-sync function is useless unless you have an older version of ACT! Aside from this gripe, for the most part I love Quickbooks and highly recommend it for business management.

Review: i'm using pro2001 and outsource my payroll, so i'm not being blackmailed, which i think is awful.the software itself is great, takes a little getting used to but if my mom could figure it out anyone can. it works well for my small business. one drawback, you can't cut and paste on the customer Notes, which for me is frustrating, such a simple program modification... anyone know if they have changed that in the 2004 version?? shoot me an email.. ph7sh@aol.com. thanks. the support does suck. they do want your credit card information before you can even ask a question. doesn't matter what, then a tech support will call you back and decide whether the question is worth billing you for.. ridiculous. I'd love to be able to highly recommend it but since the company that makes it is so lousy, i can't. there might be something out there that is as good as this product, if you find it use that one, if you can't i've been happy with quickbooks so far.

Summary: It all depends on where you're coming from.
Review: If you don't mind being manipulated and having Intuit suck money out of your business on a long term basis, Quickbooks is worth considering. Also, Quickbooks is a standard double entry accounting system. If you have a small business and you know little or nothing about accounting, you're probably better off hiring an external bookkeeping, payroll, and/or accounting service. It might even be less expensive, and certainly less time consuming, in the long run.

Summary: Greedy Intuit will milk you for every penny!
Review: If you use the Payroll Tax service, BEWARE: Just a few years ago it was $50 annually to subscribe to the payroll tax service. In 1999 it went up to $79. Then in 2001 it doubled to $149. In 2003 it went to $169 and in 2004 they have just announced they are raising it to $199 annually. Each time they remind you that "it's still a great value!" (Peachtree plays this same game). On top of that, they retire ("sunset") old versions every 2 to 3 years. So expect to buy Quickbooks 4-5 times over the next 10 years. They will continue to play this game until customers drop off in droves and/or someone steps up with a better offer.

Summary: Ways around e-mailing invoices and payroll gripes
Review: If you want to e-mail invoices, save them as a PDF on your hard drive (the option to "save as PDF" is in the File drop down) and e-mail them as an attachment through your server. To avoid the mandatory payroll subscription services, register for the "do-it-yourself" payroll at Intuit.com, don't enter a credit card, and don't install any of their tax calculation or payroll related software. If that doesn't work for you, switch to another product--QuickBooks isn't the only game in town! Other than the above problems, QB Pro 2004 works like a charm for me.

Summary: Forced to Upgrade to this Inferior Product
Review: Intuit forced me to upgrade from a very stable QB2001 product in order to continue to process payroll. Now, our custom utility to import shopping cart orders via IIF files no longer work. We follow the help file to no avail. We download Intuit's own examples and even Intuit's examples fail in 2004. Basically, Intuit's greed to get my $150 for an upgrade is now costing me hundreds per day as we have to manually re-key orders.

Summary: QuickBooks Pro 2004 brings "slop-ware" to the forefront.
Review: My company was "sunsetted" by Quickbooks so we had to upgrade. Pretty much everything went wrong. The install loaded spyware on our computer and overwrote many of our security settings. You have to have Internet Explorer set to "medium security" even if you don't use QB 2004 on the internet. Riddled with internal "adware" and "buy-me" where you think help menus might be. Don't use this version if you have a choice. Take a look at PeachTree. The good news is that the very basic functions still work and that most of the useless and annoying "enchancements" can be turned off or gotten around.

Summary: QuickBooks Pro 2004
Review: New features lured me to upgrade from QB 2001. The ability to email documents caught my attention. I discovered that the email feature in PDF format only utilizes Intuit servers so you keep no copy of the email note attached and Intuit now has yours and your customer's email addresses. In addition you have to register to use their servers and they need your telephone for all their associate businesses. Hope you have plenty of time for talking to solicitors because that is what you do if you enter your telephone number which you have to do if you want to utilize the email feature. Read the privacy statement and you will likely not care to use the feature. I don't know how they have the nerve to call it a privacy statement. QB software now over-rides Windows color scheme and forces you to use a pukie green header on each window. I just noticed another printer installed called "Intuit Internal Printer". I'm not sure what that is about. I've seen several pop up advertisements in the software. I recommend disabling the automatic updates or you will be bombarded with pop ups. Other than that, Intuit needs to take an ethics course. Everything I had before upgrading seems to function so I'm thankful for that.

Review: Note that the $100 Rebate is for UPGRADES only. It is a bit deceiving when you purchase your QuickBooks, it is for those who had previous versionsof QuickBooks only.

Summary: Intuit does it again with a great accounting software packag
Review: Other than a few accounting classes in college, I'm no accounting expert. Intuit has always helped me feel like a CPA and this new release makes it even easier. This is great for a small business as both myself and my partner can look "at the books" at the same time and make changes without any problems. The biggest thing I like about this new edition is the Loan Manager. I like seeing all the loan information in one place and doing a payment from the loan manager is quick and easy. I like how it instantly shows you how the loan payment effects the entire loan. This is a great addition to this version of Quickbooks. With all of the business related travelling, the Vehicle Milage Tracker is also a great addition. And the Cash Flow Projector was a nice feature to play around with as well.... very nice!! Also, one of my favorite improvements is how well it intereacts with Microsoft Office. The ability to turn an invoice into a .pdf and instantly mail it off has been a huge time saver. I read it also works great with importing and exporting to Excel. I haven't played with it, but it is nice to know that is there when I need it (I'm sure I will some day). If you already have Quickbooks, you should most definately go with this product. If you are starting a business, I would suggest this product over any other small business accounting software.
