Summary: Too Much Work to Even Get Started
Review: I have spent days trying to download my bank transactions just to be told I have to register - which I did right at the start. The registration is asked for a second time but only allows for an American address. Being Canadian this makes things a bit awkward. I tried calling the 'support' line but they won't even talk to you without your credit card number! I never had this much trouble with the trial version. I'm still not in a position to use it even now! If I knew what I would be up against I never would have gotten the software. I gave this one star because I still have a little hope I'll figure this all out soon..........

Summary: Dissatisfaction
Review: I have used Quicken Delux for 7 years, with updates to vers. 5.5f.
Then I bought the Quicken 2002, and what a mess. There is adverisement for Quicken/Intuit products that take 1/5 of the screen, and they can NOT be removed. It was so annoying, I nwent to Money 2000 by Microsoft. Even though Money 2000 does not have the smooth performace of Quicken, it is a pleasure to use WITHOUT the annoying unmovable ads.

Summary: The Best in Personal Finance Software
Review: I have used Quicken for several years, and now with Quicken 2002 Deluxe I am more convinced than ever that it is the best personal finance software available. Recently I evaluated a copy of Microsoft Money, but found it less user-friendly and lacking in the functionality of the Quicken line.

In comparison to the 2001 version, Quicken 2002 Deluxe has significantly enhanced budgeting tools. In the past, it appeared the program was written more for the upper class with many investments to manage rather than for the middle class with many ends to meet. Quicken 2002 Deluxe offers help for the vast majority of us who need to live on a budget both to pay our bills and to reduce our debts.

Quicken 2002 Deluxe will track multiple checking and saving accounts, credit cards, auto loans, home equity lines, mortgages, investments and more. The online banking features available make it possible to pay bills from the comfort of one's home with no check writing and no postage. This program will also produce a multitude of financial reports to chart progress in various areas. There simply is no product, in my assessment, that rivals the scope and the simplicity of Quicken.

A word of advice: purchase the deluxe version, not the basic version. The word "Basic" really means "partial" and the word "Deluxe" really means "full." For the few extra dollars required, Deluxe is a MUCH better bargain. Otherwise, a person with the basic version will begin to see how much he is missing, and will then pay much more money to upgrade to the deluxe features. It is cheaper to purchase Deluxe initially.

Another pointer for this program: make backups continually on a drive separate from your hard drive. I make a backup every time I use the program. With the backup features it is no chore at all, and it is definitely worth it should a hard drive fail or the main file accidentially be deleted.

If you are upgrading from Quicken 2001 or earlier, this package is well-worth the price. If you are a new user, try Quicken Deluxe and see what a difference it will make!

Summary: Big disappointment in its Web integration
Review: I recently moved to Mac OS X from Windows 2000. This is one of my first Mac OS X application. First, it's a disappointment that this is not Cocoa-based. Instead its Carbon-based and hence, the dialog looks poor on Mac OS X especially when you view it at very high resolution screen. The fonts are just so tiny. And worse, there is no way you can change the font for the registry.

I use online banking a lot and its online banking is ok if you're connecting to Quicken server or if your bank has Quicken support. However, for those bank that use Web interface, the integration is terrible. You'd have to use your browser to download the QFX file manually and then import the transaction that way. It's more integrated in Windows.

Summary: Very Functional - Do not be fooled by other reviews
Review: I recently purchased a new iMac (made the switch from PC) and was distraught I would no longer be able to use Microsoft Money. I've been using it since 2000 and have had nothing but sucess.

After reading the mainly negative reviews ...my first inclination was to go out and buy a new program (Moneydance, Quicken 2003, or Virtual PC to continue using Money) to handle my finances. Since Quicken 2002 Deluxe came pre-installed on my iMac, I decided to give it a try.

I am pleasantly suprised at its capabilities. It is not quite as intuitive as I would like but I think that has something to do with the layers and layers of options Intuit has built into this program. The ability to handle several bank accounts, credit card accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts, loans, assets and liabilities is all there. There are built in reports to view various categories or view your entire portfolio of accounts at once.

In response to some other reviews let me address some of their comments:

1) In order for Quicken to download statements automatically you must do two things. One - activate the account you have created in Quicken to access information online. Two - contact your bank and have them set up your account for this purpose. It is at this time they will give you a PIN to use. One reviewer mentioned they tried every PIN # they had to no avail. That is correct - your bank gives you a special one to use for Quicken downloads. Another option - if that is too much of a hassle - is to log onto your bank's website and export history using Quicken Web-Download. Either way same end result - one method is set up once and activated by clicking one button. The other way involves a couple of steps each time.

2) Dates all default to 2020 and cannot be changes was another reviewer's comments. This happened to me once. The system defaulted to 2020 when I tried entering a date. After I recorded it, I went back and edited the date to 2002. A one time pain in my experience as it now defaults to 2002.

Overall this program is adequate to manage your personal finances. It has several useful reporting and reconciling features and does allow internet banking downloads. So why not five stars? The graphics / presentation / layout leave a lot to be desired. If you are using OS X, Quicken is a huge disappointment compared to other programs. Another reason for losing a star is that this program is not intuitive and requires research to get tasks done; the PDF version of the manual is over 400 pages.

Summary: Not worth the upgrade
Review: I upgraded from 2000 and there is not much that has changed. The same problems are still there and they added some new ones. The newest annoyance is that you can only use one rebate- either the upgrade rebate OR the turbo-tax rebate, so if you already own quicken there is no incentive to purchase turbotax, especially since most reviews say Taxcut is the better program. In summary, if you already own a version of quicken- keep using it, this version doesn't add much and certainly isn't worth the upgrade.

Summary: Buggy Monster
Review: I upgraded from Quicken Deluxe 2001 to 2002. Results:

Crashed repeatedly when i tried to delete all previous quickfill transactions. (Yes i have the latest update.) So i exported everything to .qif format, created a new file, and imported. Problems: my free online access to my bank stopped working. [This was fixed by calling my bank] And they still don't have support for my other accounts that are supported in the Windows version.

More seriously: somehow my main bank account decided i have [money] more than i do, and as a result i've been spending money i don't have and may have to do a cash advance on my credit card to cover it. Luckily i noticed before any checks bounced. So now i have to look through 1200 transactions by hand to see where the discrepancy appeared. Not a happy camper.

Summary: Upgrade experience
Review: I upgraded from the 2000 version with no trouble. The handling of regular bill payments is much better constructed. I am running the application under OS X and it runs very fast, and so far reliably. It seems to be a good piece of software.

Summary: Considering an upgrade from 2001
Review: I use Quicken for EVERYTHING. I haven't opened or used my checkbook since I purchased it 3 years ago and started using Billpay. I track all my investments, debt, credit cards, everything! I couldn't live without this program.

However, I purchased 2002 as an upgrade from 2001 and haven't even opened the box yet. After reading some of the reviews I'm thinking of returning it. Nothing has convinced me that this version is worth the money. I like some of the new features but I think I can live without them for the amount of money they want for it.

I'm looking for a version that fixes and improves some things I've experience. For instance, the program is a memory hog and if you have a lot of data (like 3 years worth with me), it's worse. It'll crash my system if I have too much open. I believe this problem is related to the complaint of other users saying it's slow. The program just eats up memory. I think the area of memory management the program uses needs improvement.

Also, Quicken needs to be friendlier to broadband. Why do I need to click a bunch of buttons every time I want to get new transactions or get updated investment info? This should be cleaned up and be a little more streamlined and automatic (in fact, this feature is getting a lot of attention the new version of Money 2002 which it has). That also includes tying better into getting my credit card transactions. I don't know if 2002 does that but it should be more automatic.

If you're new to Quicken this product is worth every penny. If you're upgrading, it may not be worth it.

Summary: Misleading Product Ended Up Costing More
Review: I was a big fan of Quicken 5 years ago, but this version is abysmal. Features that are advertised on the box, but "discontinued", a user interface that takes some time to get used to, and a serious bug that I can't get anyone at Quicken to respond to. I created a 401k account, added two mutual funds, gave them both initial balances, then corrected the balances when I found my account information. The problem is that the updated amounts are correct in the register, but are not correct in any other reports. I can't get it to refresh the data in the reports without deleting the account. I give up. Going to try to find a copy of Quicken from the mid 90's.
