Rating: Summary: A LOT of BASS for the Buck ! Review: These Cerwins are what American muscle cars of the 60's were...powerful and American built-tough !By the obvious cabinet dimensions these are not your college dorm or office bookshelf speakers. In this day and age it is extremely rare to find a floorstanding speaker within the 15" woofer range. With Cewin Vega, size does matter ! The size speaks in volumes (pun intended). If you are looking for that certain high you get from rich bass and booming thunderous effects for overall music and home theatre applications, then look no further or hear no further...The highs are sharp and clear (not soft), though you can adjust this with the speakers built in or onboard volume and frequency adjusting knobs. The best thing about these speakers is that they can be safely driven with 50 watts of amp power to their maximum of 400 watts (always remember that it's actually extremely low wattage power that can damage speakers moreso than if you were to go slightly over). The mids are remarkably astounding for vocals as well. You will also be amazed when using with an actual analog source such as a turntable or hooking an equalizer for a hair raising experience. There are some speakers in this size range or even the 12" range where you have to crank the volume to get somewhat decent sound output(especially, using a turntable---since turntables put out low signals that must be adequately boosted or amplified). Cerwin Vega speakers love to reproduce the audio signal from a turntable with ease ! That's what most of these CV speaker designs were primarily meant for before digital formats came out!
However, these are NOT to be confused for audiophile high end grade speakers that produce accurate sound or subtle and delicate nuances. Most audiophile speakers have a soft to natural or neutral sounding and warm quality. These Cerwin Vegas are NOWHERE near sounding soft and subtle. If you use these for strictly classical music applications you will be disappointed. The Cerwins produce a much colored and somewhat exaggerated sound quality. Afterall, this particular bulky and massive speaker design was or is originally meant to be used as DJ club speakers. Keep in mind that you must have the room and large space to really take full advantage of the earthshaking and crisp sound quality these beauties can produce in your home ! They are very musical sounding in the loud partying-dance floor sense than the Mozart listening classical sense. One miniscule gripe is that I wish Cerwin Vega would have offered these in the optional walnut/cherry grain that similar models of the past used to come in !
If you want these just for a helluva listening and fun experience, and are not looking to be critical or analytical, then you can't go wrong with the E715's.These perform their best in a well sound insulated and carpeted room with thick shades or drapes on the windows (it's annoying to hear exposed windows vibrate) ! I also recommend removing or securing collectibles, breakables, and family framed pictures as the bass frequency on these go pretty low and will literally move, vibrate, and chatter (not shatter) the heck out of them (from my experience, wall hanging framed artwork or collectible plates are highly susceptible---seriously, no joke---you don't wanna hear unnecessary vibrating noises that will ruin your listening pleasure)!
