Summary: Star Office 5.2 Rocks!
Review: This stuff works just as advertised. It interoperates with MS-Office, and at a $200+ price difference, buying Star Office 5.2 is a no-brainer.

Summary: StarOffice Shines in Office Suite World
Review: Sun sets its StarOffice against the reigning office suite champion out of Redmond, WA. While the interface takes a bit getting used to, once you master it, you are up and running with a full complement of applications. If you're like me, you started using the suite because of the price, a full magnitude below what Bill's folks are charging. I found the compatibility between Sun's suite and others (Corel and MS) to be great. StarOffice will read and write most other formats. The word processor performs many tasks more simply and elegantly than Word. The presentation program is also a breeze with many great-looking templates. This newest version sports a stand-alone viewer and smaller presentation file sizes. Add an integrated email program, database, draw program, and awesome Internet connectivity ... and you have the best value in software today. However, the program does not offer a Macintosh version, even though it is available in many different languages. Buy StarOffice and stop using that illegal copy of MS or Corel. Your conscience will be salved and your wallet won't be robbed.

Summary: Who needs Microsoft Office?
Review: StarOffice has improved significantly with the release 5.2. New features have been added, stability has improved significantly, import/export filters have improved, usage has been streamlined and simplified.

StarOffice is a great package that is very complete and contains just about everything most users will every need or want. It still has some quirks and the user interface in general needs some getting used to, but once you've mastered that you'll find you can work very efficiently with StarOffice.

The system requirements are relatively tame so you can even run it on underpowered laptops or older desktop systems confortably. I have been running it for some time now on a 400 Mhz Mac PowerBook under VirtualPC and it has become my staple productivity suite.

Don't be fooled by the low price. StarOffice gives other productivity suites a run for their money.

Summary: Sun StarOffice 5.2
Review: I haven't had much experience with non Microsoft office products, but Star Office is a very good product. It is easy to use, not as easy as Microsoft stuff, but there are additional features that can be uesful, like swaping data with different operating systems. Hey, if Microsoft is messed up for a few years, try this out!

Summary: Star Office Suite is Sweeeet!
Review: I was a little trepidatious at first trying out a completely different office suite other than Microsoft's. But this Suite is a jewel. It not only has all the features of MS Office, but is compatible with Office documents on a cross-platform versatility. The documentation is easy to read and setup is a no-brainer. Way to Go, Star Office!

Summary: Real MS-Office competitor
Review: Since Sun acquired StarOffice suite I was wondering how long it could come out with a package in order to be a real MS-Office replacement. Well, now is the time! With updated and improved filters, not only you can access/work regular MS-Office files (including 2000 suite) but have an alternative that is stable, multi-platform and cost-effective for home and work usage.

Summary: You get what you pay for
Review: Star Office isn't bad if you are looking for a simple Office suite with watered down features and very little support. With Star Office, you are on your own. Sun touts Star Office as a strong competitor to Microsoft Office. Hardly. Use this product for yourself if you like but remember, Star Office is free. Based on this, how much time do you think Sun will put into supporting, troubleshooting and enhancing this product? Also, given Sun's track record with how bugs are addressed in it's server side products, there isn't much hope regarding resolving issues in this product. Lastly, Sun is a hardware company. They have never been strong in software development and, with the introduction of Star Office, they maintain that track record.

If you want serious integration in your Office Suite, Microsoft Office is still the top choice. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Summary: The best suite at the best price
Review: Since we use Star Office 5.1 as alternative to MS Office 97, it surpass our expectatives. Now we try the new version and is fantastic because besides the confortable interface for our daily work and it offers a great interface and tools for internet-working! You will not have filter problems when you want to share documents in office 97&2000 and viceversa.

Summary: Switch to StarOffice - It is great!
Review: StarOffice is a great product. The interoperability with other office suites is one of the best! - No need to go to obscure web sites to download filters; its all there for you. It is different than office but once you get used to the concept - it is very easy to use. I use it for e-mail, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, file management, and the address book. Even though you can download it for free from the Sun site - $40 is not a bad price to pay and get your own manuals, and CD. I also found a wealth of information, and free training, at their site ...

Summary: Move over MSFT...
Review: This package contains more functionality, greater useability and mostimportantly SUN engineering. That means that the people who argueable did invent the web (Sorry Mr. Gore), who did create Java, and who maintain more net servers than any other company now offer really stellar consumer software.

Star has all the features you expect in an office suite. It adds a capable draw program internet compatible (of course) and its own desktop. I have spent $1000s on other software, but the money I spent on Star was the best investment in computing I made in a long time.

My only caveats are these: 1) It may take a bit of getting used to, ultimately the variability away from MSFT makes good sense so you won't be annoyed as you get the hang of it, and... 2) Make sure to buy it here as it cost me somewhat more at a retail establishment

Way to go SUN!
