Summary: Not thrilled by the bugs
Review: I purchased Office XP when I received my new computer with Windows XP. It was a terrible mistake. I've got nothing going on about MS and their registration demands. They have a right to keep people from stealing their stuff -- but when they sell expensive software that is full of bugs on the software platform it was designed for?!?! I was so less-than-impressed I got my money back. And that took work.

Summary: Certain to Help any Student's Productivity
Review: I recently purchased this software, and I have been nothing but pleased. Offered at a budget price, Office XP for Students and Teachers can certainly up the productivity of any home or mobile PC. The product is easy to install and easy to use. It even comes with a CD tutorial! I highly recommend this product, especially at this bargain price.The product includes many popular software titles used in today's educational world. Microsoft Word, the standard word processing software in today's educational environment, offers spelling and grammar check along with user-friendly features and easy customization. Microsoft Excel is an outstanding spreadsheet software, and PowerPoint is, in my opinion, the best presentation software available. Though I do not use Outlook, I am confident that it is as easy to use as the other programs. This offer is something that I would recommend very highly. If you don't have this in your productivity software pile, I recommend getting it as soon as possible. It certainly beats it's rival - Microsoft Works - for both the money and features.

Summary: WARNING: Obnoxious "activation" required
Review: In keeping with Microsoft's total lack of concern for consumers, they have fixed this version so the purchaser must do a minimal registration via the web or phone in order to use the product. This means it is locked to your computer. This is an effort to prevent piracy. Preventing piracy is an honorable and important goal. However, there's more to it. If you upgrade or replace your computer, you'll have to call them on the phone and explain your story and if they think you're telling the truth, then maybe you can install the program you bought on your new computer. This also means that if you have two computers on your desk, you have to buy two copies, one for each computer. Also, this is Microsoft's first step toward forcing consumers to lease software instead of buying it. This move would likely force consumers to upgrade to the latest bloated version, even if they are happy with the old one. Office XP is a decent set of applications, but there are at least two good alternatives that don't come with the obnoxious features. Check out either StarOffice or WordPerfect Office 2002. Both are excellent office suites and both are available on Amazon. Both are totally compatible with Microsoft Office file formats. So, before dropping a ton of money on another Microsoft marketing scheme, consider the alternatives.

Summary: A Great Program
Review: When I got my computer back from the shop and realized that all of my Microsft Office programs were taken off, I was devastated. I didn't want to buy a new computer to get all of the programs that I had wanted so there was one thing to do. I bought this program. Never have I bought a program that was so easy to install and operate. With Microsft XP Standard for Students and Teachers you get four office programs. They are Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Power Point. You receive three discs when you get this. One is to install the programs, one is to download content for each program, such as clip art, and the last disc is to train you so you are able to learn how to operate each of the programs. I use the last disc often. Once you install the discs you must either activate your programs through the internet or over the phone. After that, you are the owner and operator of four wonderful and extremely helpful Micrsoft Office programs. This set is specifically designed for students and teachers and if you are not on of the two you should go with a general set of these programs. This ste is great for a student or teacher that uses the computer for graphs, typing, spreadsheets, etc. This is the best way to go if you want to get all four of these Microsoft Office products. This is very simple to use and if you have any problems you can use one of the given discs so you can learn how to operate the programs. I really recommend this product. It is very ehlpful and will be used a lot. Get this and our computer work will be much easier. Happy Computing!!!

Summary: Greatly improved over Beta
Review: I have been using Windows X-P since the final release. The Beta I hated but I like the final version fine. The upgrade from Windows 2000 Professional is not really necessary for everyone. For those doing a lot of graphic and motion pictures, it is certainly worth the upgrade. I have had no freezing, or crashes with it.

Summary: Well worth it!!
Review: I went from Windows 98 2nd Edition to loading Windows XP. It makes one heck of a diference. The start-up time is about 30-60 seconds, as oposed to the 5 minutes and over it would take 98 to load for me. The promise of plug and play that was advertised in 98 is now actually available in XP. Stability is much improved also. I can let my machine run for a weekand a half now before it even hicups. It is a far cry from a perfect operating system, but it is the best attempt Microsoft has made in a long time, and it is leaps and bounds over their last couple. The tools that are included are very handy and extremly user friendly. The new look takes a little getting used to (it is somewhat bubbly), but the classic look is but a click away. Be prepared to upgrade some of your periferals though. Microsoft's new stance of supporting older products is somewhat bully-like. I had to upgrade to a new joystick for some of my games because their very own original Sidewinder Force Feedback is not supported in XP. This was pretty minor though, it was old technology.

Summary: So Far, So Good....
Review: I just purchased Office XP for Students and Teachers the other day and it's cool. It's a really big program though. I only installed the most commonly used components which used about 171 mb, but if I would have done a complete installation, it would have been 414 mb. I've noticed that since I installed it, my other programs move a little slower than they used to. I guess that's why they recommend that you have Pentium 3 or higher. I am running it on Celeron. I'm not complaining though, because I like it a lot better than MS Works. I recommend Office XP. I think it's a very good investment. The only drawback is that you cannot upgrade it in the future. If your not concerned about that, then I would say buy it. I bought mine ...at [local store].

Summary: Licensing issues for teachers
Review: As a public school counselor assigned to two different school sites, I needed Office XP on my laptop AND desktop at home. It's been hard to access a computer for confidential letters among the old dinasaur Macs at my sites and, if interupted (a crisis falls in my lap), send the document I'm working on to finish on the desktop at home. So I ordered this, installed it on the laptop, launched, and found out it only works 49 more times before "activating" it. But I need it on the desktop too!!! Called a catalog educational software company and was told that there is no license for this product and Microsoft would tell me the same. Have to buy another program at same price they said. WRONG! The program license covers a laptop AND desktop. Call the order desk at Microsoft; someone will explain. Yahoo!! PS: I am dismayed at reports that users were unable to load the program on a second computer. I had no problem at all, just a simple, short conversation with the help desk at the number included with the CD. I guess now that my desktop PC has crashed (beyond repair) and the new one is about to be booted, I'll learn how understanding MS is. Hope I have more luck than some of you! Sorry :-(

Summary: Heads Up!
Review: Not being totally computer literate, when I read the description on Amazon.com, I thought this product had features that were better suited for students and teachers rather than those who needed applications for other work and didn't realize that statement pertained to licensing. Fortunately, I am a student otherwise I would have had to return it, since the licensing agreement specifically says you must be either a student or teacher to use it and did not specifiy just "at time of purchase" however, the Microsoft CSR assured me that I could continue with it once I leave school. When I registered it didn't ask for my school's name however, it did know who I am before I even entered any data, so I guess they would find anyone who tried to use it illicitly.

Summary: Do the Job Right
Review: There is no other product which compares to the Microsoft Office suite. "Microsoft Office XP Standard for Students & Teachers" is the place to to get started. And it is the place you'll probably stay. Most teachers and fewer students need Access. You do need Word and Excel, and occassionally, PowerPoint. Learn basic word processing and spreadsheet usage. Shine in meetings with PowerPoint. For e-mailing documents and files to coworkers, you can be confident they'll easily open Office files... there is a good chance they use it themselves. Word is a huge program which can do far more than you'll need, but it will allow you versaility and simplicity WordPerfect has yet to pull off. Excel is a basic spreadsheet with incredible math functionality. I don't need most of the math, other than minor budgets and such. You might only need to keep track of your students' coursework, but you can do it in style. Sort your data by student, zip code, GPA, hair color... whatever you like. PowerPoint makes those cool slideshows with the text that can slip in on the screen. With the templates, you can look good without requiring a graphic design degree. I fully recommend "Microsoft Office XP Standard for Students & Teachers. You need it, it is easy, and the price is right. Anthony Trendl
