Summary: EXCELLENT SOFTWARE
Review: I installed this software on my machine today, and it works great. I was tentative in making my purchase because of the poor ratings, but after I installed the product, I realised the REAL reason why most people probably had problems with this product. I'll bet anything that the people who say their computers got messed up did NOT follow the installation instructions in the book that comes with this software. It is IMPERATIVE that any existing anti-virus software or firewalls are removed prior to the installation of this product. If you have Windows XP, you must deactivate the built-in firewall! All of that information is contained in the installation instructions. I would also recommend making a startup disk if you don't already have one (check your Windows help for more info on this), and making a backup of all important files before you install ANY software of this magnitude. I only have one complaint about this product: the installation was painfully slow, and at times I wondered if it was doing anything during the install because the hard drive light was not always blinking. But after checking to see that the cursor on the screen moved when I moved the mouse, I decided to have faith and left it alone. It took well over an hour to complete the installation, maybe more, but it did finally complete and let me know that the installation was successful. One thing that threw me off was the little bar that shows you how far along in the installation process it is, but even after the bar was completely full, it kept going for another half hour or so. Other than that, I am very satisfied with this product, and upon my first full-system scan it already found some spyware, and it has successfully blocked out all pop-up windows! It is well worth the price of the yearly subscription renewal for updating virus definitions, as it will greatly reduce your chances of any kind of computer threats.

Summary: Why Take The Risk?
Review: I had been a loyal customer of Symantec for years and have faithfully upgraded my Norton SystemWorks and Norton Internet Security every year. No longer. NIS 2004 simply does not work and despite this obviously flawed software, Symantec has set it loose on its loyal customers. I had upgraded my NIS 2003 to 2004 on a new computer I had built (XP Pro) and could not enable auto-protect. This software redirected me to the Symantec web site with a convoluted "work-around" that entailed clicking through to several cross-referenced web pages and downloading addition program to "fix" the problem. Even after painstakingly following their directions and uninstalling and reinstalling twice (including editing my registry), the auto-protect function did not work. Also, it took forever for my new Outlook 2003 program to send/receive e-mails. Symantec's web site says this is a known issue with XP and provides a link to a Microsoft web page to download a patch . . . the page it references provides an update patch for Win 2000 OS??? When I pointed this out in an e-mail to Symantec tech support (calls to them are $30 bucks a pop) they told me to contact Microsoft . . . so basically there is NO FIX for XP users!!! Lastly, the new Outlook 2003 already has filters for junk e-mail etc. and does a pretty good job . . . the Norton Antispam program, however, caused my Outlook 2003 to crash and there isn't a way to uninstall it unless you completely uninstall NIS 2004!! I am so disappointed with Symantec I returned NIS 2004 AND SystemWorks 2004 to receive my refund. I got Zone Alarm Pro and McAffee instead . . . both work great. If you want to roll the dice, go ahead and try to install this junk, but why risk spending hours trying to get it to work with minimal tech support and likely incompatibility with XP and Outlook 2003?

Summary: Worked for me.
Review: Well, I must be one of the few fortunate ones on here. Mine installed no problem (but I DID uninstall my Norton Anti-Virus 2002 & Personal Firewall 2002 first). Seems to work great. Sorry to hear about all the other folk's problems....makes me wonder why I'm NOT having any (I'm running Win XP as well).

Summary: A fine product
Review: I upgraded from Norton Internet Security 2002 with a download, mostly to get the anti-spam capability. Download went fine. Upgrade went okay, although my system did hang on the second boot after installation. The problem disappeared with another boot. I have not noticed any speed problems. Old programs from System Works 2001 work fine. Symantec says that Norton anti-spam does not work with the Windows XP beta, but I have version 2 of that beta and there isn't much of a problem; a toolbar sometimes does not display, but the filter works great. I expect that some of the problems people are having with this program are related to incorrect firewall configuration, and I must say, you do have to get used to the firewall. But I have been using this firewall for 3 years, so re-configuring it correctly was not a problem for me. I'd recommend this product over a an anit-virus subscription renewal, just for the anti-spam feature.

Review: I used Norton Internet Security for several years now, however this year the upgrade was a disaster. It took me two weeks to get the update (even their online shop is a complete mess, you select English Europe and end up on the US site where they tell you after filling out all info includign creditcard) that you are not entitled to upgrade the very product you bought on the US site 1 year before. (I assume some homeland protection feature ?).
Now after getting it it completely slows down my system, surfing is like 14.4k modem. I will go after them for a refund.
I wonder what mad people did develop such a piece of ........

Summary: Beyond Worthless!!
Review: I have used Norton products in the past and I am familiar with them. I bought NIS 2004 recently to try it out. After 4 attempted installs, I have finally given up. I am thankful that I have Roxio GOBACK, I had to use it 3 of the 4 times. During install, NIS would either freeze or not reboot properly when asked to do so. The MS scandisk would appear due to manual shutdown and would only scan to the 2nd bar, over and over(up to 1 hr, I then shut it down and used GOBACK). The 1 time it did install, it did not work and had errors, I used the unistall NIS icon and it properly removed itself. I have never had this problem with any other software on my computer. NIS 2003 worked like a charm last year. Being a past Norton customer, I consider this to be a slap to my face. Buying software that can not be installed normally and being put into the position of having a non-working computer. Norton has been on a downhill slid recently with their products, but with this one, they have fallen off the cliff.

Summary: DON'T DO IT!!!
Review: Do not buy NIS 2004. I recently built a new computer, so I decided to put the latest and greatest internet protection on it. Even with a brand new installation of Windows XP I could not get NIS 2004 to install properly. After 5 days of working on this problem I still can't get the anti-virus autoprotect to run. I've completely erased my hard drive reinstalled everything including NIS 2004, all according to Symantec "experts" still I get the error message "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error"(4002,517)or (4002,519). This is insane. I will demand a refund on this product!!! I repeat "Do Not Buy".

Summary: 2004 better than all of the previous version of NIS.
Review: I don't know why there's so many people have bad comments about this version of NIS. For me I find this work great on my computer and I am not even running NIS 2004 on very fast computer either, It was only a 1.3GHz Pentium 4 Gateway computer. I just found out that I have a adware that somehow got in my computer for last 14-16 months ago. And during that time Norton AntiVirus 2003 wasn't even scanning nor dectecting an adware on my computer at all until lately I just upgrade to 2004. Then it has found an adware that is on my computer from year ago. Therefore I have no longer need to deal with any popup ad window anymore everytime when I connect to the internet. I am kind of mad though because of the 2003 wasn't scanning the adware on my computer at all, but then again at least it showed 2004 has improve the software a lot from 2003. Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Intrusion Detection work about the same as the previous version except Intrusion has autoblock feature for a certain amount of time that you allow someone access your computer which will work great for networking. Norton Privacy Control can now let you choose each different web site setting whether what you like permit or block now instead of blocking everything even you don't want to be block or you need information for the web site for you access the page. Ad Blocking, which is one of my favorite feature in NIS 2004. In 2003, also has this feature setup too except it didn't really worked for the popup windows and only work a few ad on the web site. Now with 2004, you can now really go on the web site without dealing with any annoying ad or popup windows now. Also there's going to ba a web assistant toolbar set in Internet Explorer for you disable either popup and/or ad on web site if you want to. Also you get to control whether which web site to block popup window and which to leave it open for some webs site that need popup window to work with. Norton Parental Control work great for your family. You can choose which kind of material on the web site that is allow for each different users. Although it takes sometime for Norton Parental Control to load up the setting before you can go on the web. This is a downside for NIS, but since I don't really need so it didn't bother me much. This feature is optional for the user to install. And last and not least, also this is a new feature they just add on for NIS 2004, which is New Norton AntiSpam. It worked perfectly as the way I want it. It'll automatic block up a lot of your junk mail from your email account instead of having delecting it. You can the an email address to blocklist or allowlist. If you're using Outlook Express and/or Microsoft Outlook, it will automatic create an new toolbar that helps you send your junk mail to AntiSpam if it didn't delect your junk mail for you. Usually at first you use AntiSpam, you probably need to some of your junk mail to AntiSpam yourself for it will not know your personal junk mail setting so well. Overall this NIS 2004 work much better than the previous version. More security on your computer even though it gets kind of annoying everytime you read file, it often popup a window to let you that the AntiVirus is scanning the file that you're trying to open, but this is just a security matter, which it'll increase the safety on your computer. And you gain more control over your priacy setting, ad blocking and other I have just refered before. Unlike 2003, you can only set ad blocking either on or off and not much control over it. This is a perfect software to increase your safety on the net. About the performance on the PC when you first install this NIS is actually kind of slow but as soon as you run your liveupdate on your NIS 2004 to get some update files, then it will probably fix this problem for you.

Summary: Glacial - Until I figured out the workaround
Review: As noted by many others, Internet Security 2004 (and AntiVirus 2004) makes web-browsing about as fun as using a 24.4kb modem. It runs glacially, to be sure. However, there is a workaround, and it entails disabling Java Script in the Auto-Protect Exclusion List. Fundamentally, click on Anti-Virus, Options, Auto-Protect, Exclusions. Add *.js to the list, and it should work a lot better. How this product got out of QA like this is beyond me. It works fine for me now, but what a pain.
