Summary: Edit a PDF if you can.
Review: If you are reading this you are on the right track to be fore warned and armed to make a decision. I read the reviews, but did not heed the warnings. This product may be great for a 1 or 2 page conversion into Word (hence the 2-star rating), but not for larger PDF's. First, you can expect an alert that this PDF can not be converted completely without installing OminiPage 11 or later...which is correct. Conversion is less than good expecially if there are variations in fonts and styles. Graphics almost impossible without OminiPage. No ability to select pages to convert, must do the whole document. Help is available if your credit card is not max'ed out...no free help even online. PRICY!Most online help, only and minimal, referes you to Word Help which in my case left me out in the cold . If your edit is of text only and minimal, you are likelly ok. Major editing creates big time problems in formating, especially of dual column data. There is a 30 day return policy, but to get that done you have to deal with the ScanSoft online store (unless you buy direct or not online)...I gave up and returned to Amizon and paid the return shipping. Finally, if you buy be prepared for a learning curve on your own and a lot of frustration. If you still want to get those PDF's converted to Word, suggest going for the big bucks with and OCR that does it all. Did not do this, regretfully.

Item being uninstalled and returned to Amazon for refund.

Summary: Finally
Review: It's about time that someone came out with this product! PDF files are so difficult to deal with, and our firm often has no way to track down the original. PDF Converter is fast and gets all of us back into Word so we can make adjustments. We've been using it for contracts, but I'm sure it would work great for any files. Documents look perfect. Great Product!

Summary: Beware of Activation
Review: One purchase is good for one install only! The activation blocks it from re-install. My laptop died and I was unable to install this on the replacement machine VAIO. Got total use of 4 months for $50 purchase!

Good luck if your hard drive crashes or machine dies.

Summary: Alternative
Review: Since several people apparently aren't too happy with this product, you may want to consider using "PDFCreator" instead. It's available for free on the internet (Google for it), and installs a "PDF printer" on your machine.

Summary: Marketing Gimmick
Review: Such a great idea converting PDF files to Word text. Unfortunatley this product only converts about 3 out of 10 files accurately with the remaining requiring a much more expensive software product from Scansoft to convert the rest. Almost like the bait and switch tactic preformed by used car salesmen. Buy this product only for very limited use.

Summary: Some Problems
Review: This is a great start and does most text and scanned pictures correctly. It has trouble with complex drawings.

One problem is when this program encounters a problem it trys to upsell you to OmniPage Pro to do the job right. OmniPage Pro is a $$$ program and uses OCR technology to make some text editable.

Text on some pages is left as a graphic. Some drawings blow up.

I don't think it works as advertized even though the company has a solution with other more expensive software.

Summary: Only converts small % of pdf files
Review: This is the first time I've reviewed a product online, but this one upset me enought to complain. They say in the Quick Reference "Most pdf files contain a text layer with standard encoding"... not in my experience! It does a beautiful job of converting what it calls these "normal" pdf files, but nowhere on the box or in the ads does it say that these are files only created with a text layer from Office products like Word or Excel. Scanned pdfs (like the vast majority I work with) coming from scanners via Acrobat, for example, do not have a text layer - they are purely images, and PDF Converter cannot touch these. You find this out when you install it, try and fail to convert file after file, and then go to the help files - it's not even in the 2-page Quick Reference. I was able to convert 2/10 pdfs I needed to work with. I'm returning it (J&R accepts 30-day returns) A deceptively advertised product. It's easier for me to print the pdf out and process it with AAbby reader.

Summary: Excellent and much cheaper than Adobe. A must have !
Review: This product offers excellent capabilites. I am a lawyer and have a lot of PDF, this takes care of them very nicely so I can transfer them in Word. I did not even consider Adobe software which is way to expensive and way too complicated to use. Scansoft software has also the big advantage to be fully compatible with Microsoft Office, you can even call the program from Office. The software is flawless. For less than $50 it is a must have and an Adobe killer!
